Swapped '11 E350 Wagon for a '15 ML350 BT - Wheel Advice!

Hey Guys,

I'm a long-time MB owner (4 E-Classes), but a new ML owner. (2015 ML 350 Bluetec 4Matic with 20" AMG wheels - Canada)

NOOB Question: I still have a set of 17 inch OEM E-Class wheels and am wondering if there is any way to use them on the ML for winter with the correct rubber? The bolt pattern is the same at 5 X 112... I've done many different searches on the topic but have not determined if it is possible or not... If this is a dumb question, my apologies.... (Flame Vest ON!)

Here are some shots of my first-ever SUV. 2 Days in, I LOVE it, and just installed a Swagman 4 Bike Platform Hitch Mounted rack (Could not fit a hitch to the wagon).

Factory De-badged...

4 Bikes on a Hitch-Platform? No Prob!

Can't do that with an E Wagon... (I Tried)

British Establishment meets German Newcomer...

The "European Blues Brothers"!

Which one is Belushi?

A fond farewell to our family's last E Class...

Congrats on the purchase. If you don't get a definite response about your wheels, I'd think that simply doing a trial fit on the front and back would answer your question.

PS: Change oil more often than recommended and check your air filter often as well.

Congrats on ML.
Add fuel filter to Peter's list. This thing should be replaced more often than MB recommends.

Even if they clear the brake calipers, are wide enough for tires of the right size and the offsets are reasonably close, the weight that the E wheels themselves are rated for is very likely insufficient for a 5200+ lb SUV. Most people fail to take that into account. I personally wouldn't use them, but some people like to test the theory of natural selection...

This is a good point and I like your 'Natural selection' comment as this is one of the reasons I asked for opinions. The wagon was no lightweight (4,213 lbs. Curb Weight according to Edmunds.com) but was certainly lighter than the ML at an indicated curb weight of 4,698 lbs. so this may be the weak link... I would still love to hear from anyone who have tried it, given MB is known to over-engineer their parts and a vehicle curb weight difference of 400 lbs. may not be that significant. I wouldn't even consider this on an aftermarket wheel, but I have been impressed with the quality of OEM parts from MB, so it may no be so crazy... Or maybe it is...

Thanks also to the prior posters for the advice on servicing ahead of schedule. Right now the service indicator says 276 days before next service. Maybe I will cut that a bit short to be safe.

The diesel ML350 (BlueTEC) curb weight is a hair under 5200 lbs, not 4600. Those extra 1000 lbs on top of the E wagon would be enough to turn me away even if you could bolt the wheels on. Besides, you'd certainly need new tires, and seeing as over 80% of the MLs sold here were diesels and a lot of them are being returned from leases, the supply of used winter wheels for them has thus far been plentiful.

Unlike in the USA, our diesel here is fortunately not 20% corn juice that absorbs a ton of water and produces different combustion byproducts, so with more frequent oil changes they ought to be reasonably durable on this side of the border. That applies to everything from fuel filter housings, oil filers seals, engine longevity (result of oil dilution) and fuel injection system to the exhaust aftertreatment compnents.

I love the the Canvasite Blue - it looks great and you don't see many of them in that color!

Thanks for the input Diabolis, I too really fell for the Cavansite blue and it was very hard to find at the right price point. Of the 136 2015 Diesel ML's I found during my search, only 4 were Cavansite blue and three of them were priced too far over my snack bracket. Of course, if you want black, white, or silver, your choices are endless. As you pointed out with the higher weight rating of the ML, the 1,000 lbs difference over the E just won't cut it on those wheels. The high number of lease return 2015's, mean used wheels could be the best way to go for next winter. I will keep my eyes peeled, anyone selling a set in Canada??

BTW, Anyone interested in a pristine set of E-Class wheels with free rubber included??

Cheers all, and thanks for sharing the wisdom!

This morning there were three OEM sets (with tires) on the first page on Kijiji (Toronto - I think I searched for "ML winter wheels"). IIRC two sets were the OEM ML 19s and one set looked like the OEM GL 19s; asking prices in the $1200 - $1600 OBO range. And, seeing as it's May, that "OBO" might work in your favour more than it would in November, and you just may be able to pick up a set for a grand or thereabouts.
