upgrade HID D1S to LED

I've had one headlight burned out and need to replace it and was going to do so in pairs. Are their any advantages to going with an LED setup? I have the HID option with the D1S bulbs. I saw the regular light upgrade to LED debacle so I'm hoping my question doesn't start a crap flinging fest. It's just a question.

If its halogen - Upgrading to HID will be a vast improvement for visibility (some will argue about glare, light dispersion, etc.....). Can't speak to LED's really.

The stock HID's are good, I'd recommend to get good replacement D1S bulbs and replace them and move on. You do have the option of changing the Kelvin for the bulbs if you want a different look but the 5000k or 6000k are the cleanest look.

Going from HIDs to LEDs without changing the entire headlamp housing to one that properly focuses the light - which does NOT EXIST for the ML - would be a downgrade AT BEST. The light dispersion characteristics of an HID bulb (onmi-directional arc with equal light output in 360 degrees) is very different form that of an LED which has a flat element (directional dispersion in whichever way the diode element(s) is/are pointing). Your existing headlamp housings and lenses are designed for the first, not the second.

Glad to see another 928 owner on the forum!

What would you say is the best looking (whilst also having an effective output) upgrade for the HID ILS headlights? I've seen the Osram XenArc Cool Blue Intense D1S mentioned quite a lot.

Left side low beam on wife's '14 ML350 just went out. Any complications changing to the Osram? Plug and play? Thanks.

Thank you very much for that link. Just did a dry run. The bulb came out easily but going back in wasn't. I had to use long needle nose pliers to get enough leverage to turn it clockwise the last few degrees. New bulbs on the way.

Osgram CBB 7k worked the best. I also got 2 years extended warranty from amazon. Sometimes you have to aligned good to put back the bulbs. That being said, i still have a hard time to put the bulbs back in from time to time.

Again, thanks. Got the 2 replacements in. Never would have done it without the curved needlenose.
