Cool V12 Voltage Transformer repair and Upgrade

Had a bad spare, first series

apart from the cover exact same as newer aluminum cover version
renewing and upgrading it

Here first pictures, silicone is tough to remove
rest is easy, cost is close to 0 compared to a new

Gonna make a nice components map for those to be replaced and upgraded

ANYONE WHO HAS BAD VOLTAGE CONVERTERS AND HELP THE PROJECT WILLING TO DONATE IT, PLEASE PM ME; I PAY SHIPPING COSTS

This is beyond my skill set but when the time comes that my V12 needs this repair, would i be able to send it to you for the work? I'd pay of course, this unit and the 2 coilpacks are the weak link of the V12 system, if we can take care of those, these engine will go 200K miles easily.

The idea is to upgrade the converter to something barely indestructible under high charge and heat (especially tunes)
After that I will post a DY solution so anyone can get the needed parts, maybe ill make a upgrade kit on ebay so no research is needed
then when you get the components just take it to any electrician who will convert it for you for low price

Its a kind of open source project intend to help out not a money maker

Right now I with the one of best automotive PCB engineers I found in Brazil. internet is great for that

What year and model is your V12 and what tune? I reached out to OETuning about tuning my 2009 SL600 and they said they were unable to do so. They said my car is the newer ECU and had to have something removed inside it and the engineer wasn't available to do it. Don't know how else is in the tuning game these days besides RennTech but they charge 3x more, not sure if it's worth it or not.

This is a ME2.7.1 ecu
my tune is a modified Kleeman tune I hit 820 HP (there is hardware involved here of course, not just a tune)

I know a lot about this ecu
you can clone any tune without paying at all with a 100$ programmer
just need to unsolder the two 29f400 and direct clone them
these are the maps

I have multiple ecus for testing I virginized (that is even more easy) then adapted with xentry and cloned

Repaired the second one 45 minutes

replaced the capacitor (d)
and the diode (there is one on each side ) on the back directly hooked up to the capacitor was fried

this probably this mostly only happens when you fry your voltage converter
so if yours is fried like mine here, try this for now

we will see when we advance with the project

Bad diode is:

and yes, this one is a latest production unit,
they are the same, just the cover changed

There is a guy out in Calif. that is installing a fuse in these to keep the coil packs from frying the converter. Maybe that is something that would help you. V12icpack.com.

@pmercury impressive work and good luck with your project. Certainly instructions for DIY crowd can come in handy. But those are VERY tricky units to rebuild, I've bought rebuilt ones without any lasting success until Clark at V12icpack.com cracked the nut and found the way to make them really reliable. So I keep my fingers crossed, but be prepared for a challenge....

thx !

I know exactly what Clark does to them, don't worry. didn't even need someone to help me on that.
But just doing what he did is not enough
Project includes one of the best automotive PCB Engineers I could hire for components change and eventually a redesign
just need time to go on with this

very exiting, we found much better capacitors instead the Vishay, new are rated at 150 celsius instead of 125
sorry I don't have more time right now. but i'm on it

I'm curious about how/what it would take to go a step further and just eliminate this box altogether. In the M279 update, MB did just that. I believe each individual coil pack handles 2 spark plugs and does the duty of switching voltages randomly in order to do the Ion current function. How hard would it be to create a harness that plugs to what normally is the Voltage XFRMR but instead it goes out to the coils individually. We then just buy M279 coils and use those instead. We would obviously make the wiring/pinout identical to how it works now on the M275 so the ECU doesn't know the difference. Am I crazy or can this be done?

it's a option i'm going to explore in my next build, but I might go for a standalone engine ecu as I want a custom cluster

@pmercury if going with a stand alone ECU, are there any legal issues with that potentially affecting emissions ("race track, off road use only") and what about ECU interactions with traction control and similar functions? Presumably those would be disabled? What about interactions with the transmission? Would the transmission also require a stand alone unit? Is a stand alone ECU really controlling only the engine or is it interacting with some other systems? I remember reading somewhere that Marcin from Speedriven built a stand alone V12TT but there were no details. Thanks.
