Disconnecting Battery Requires Command/Radio Code Entry?
Does disconnecting the battery require the Command/Radio Security Code Entry?
I don't know mine so, am I out of luck if I get a new battery?
Thanks.

If you have a security code applied to your radio and you take tha battery out it requires the code to be newly programmed. If you have lost the code, there is only one chance to get it back. You have to proof ownership of the car and together with the ID number of the car you might either get the code through your dealer or directly from MB. I did this once with Volkswagen and it worked fine, took the dealer only to lock inot VW service Computer and I had it back.

How do you know if there is a code applied?

its a built in mechanism into the mb head unit...
there is no option of "enable" or "disable"
prevents thiefs from stealing your stuff and selling it.
if you fail the code 3 times or something, the unit itself is forever locked out. be careful when entering in the code, make sure its right!

If you are in the US you should be able to get the code from the dealer. I ask mine about the window code sticker and he printed me out a listing for my car which also included the code for the radio. I used the dead battery question and played stupid.

Thanks for the reply. If I understand you correctly, because I have the command unit (where the Cd and the radio is part of the unit), I do not need to worry about getting a code from my dealer becasue command units do not ask for a code if the battery has been disconnected and/or if the command unit has been removed and then plugged in again???
Please confirm.
Thanks again.
Jason.

Matt, look again.
I'm looking at the piece of paper right now. It contains a more detailed listing of all the equipment on the car, a warranty repair service record, color codes, AND a code #. My dealer also indicated that the code is listed on some cars but not on all. I don't have a scanner otherwise I would post it. I'll see what I can come up with.
Edit on 2-18-03. Sorry about the lousy pic.

Ted is absolutely correct. You can unplug and plug the COMAND until the cows come home, you still won't need the code because the COMAND is design without the use of the code. I have COMAND in my car and I have unplug it so many time and no problems!

I disconnected the battery to charge it up and there was no problem. I had to sychronize the windows, roof and head rests but the clock was still correct.
