Ticking noise after oil change

I've got a X204 GLK (M272) that I just changed the oil on, but the car appears to be making a ticking noise now. Car only has 14000 km on it btw (this is the 2nd change due).

Used M1 0W-40 and MANN filter.

At first I thought that it was just due to low oil. I actually took out 6L and a bit from the dipstick via extractor, and only put 5.7L or so back in. But checking the dipstick it said it was actually slightly over the MAX line. Weird.

The ticking noise isn't nearly as loud as I've heard before on other cars and goes away (mostly) after a time. I can't tell if its RPM related as the rest of the engine gets too loud when I rev.

Can too much oil cause a ticking noise?

Slightly over max or even .3L wouldn't cause ticking.

My thoughts:
- Sure it's just not normal injector ticking?
- O-Rings for the filter assembly? Did you fit them all and correctly?
- Did you push the filter on the assembly all the way? to the line marking on the filter.

Ticking in the valve train is usually a sign of oil starvation.

gaskets: 3 rings off and 3 rings back on

as for filter line marking, my understanding was that you had to get it so only 1 line was visible?

Let me see if I can get a video.

I can't see where the oil change was anything but routine, the filter install included. From your video clip, I can clearly hear what you're describing and it is different than the injectors.

I'm stumped.

So this morning I went and checked the dipstick on a cold engine sitting overnight.

Constantly read high (in fact the oil covered the entire orange plastic meter part of the dipstick). Something tells me that there is oil "stuck" somewhere half way down the dipstick tube that is covering the meter in oil when I stick it down there. But surely that stuff would have leaked down to the pan by now? Its been days.

Cool oil covering dipstick

I see the same on my 2004 S430, it seems as is if the oil level is high but it isn't.

That's the same noise that the E320 3.2 Liter is making

Personally I find the Mobil 0-40 to be on the light side in terms of "body". The ticking you hear is from the lack of cushion between the cam lobes and the lifter bucket, whether it is from lack of holding ability of the bucket with the cold light oil, not sure. What I have done for years now is to add a viscosity modifier made for synthetic oil to the crankcase when changing the oil. Since this addition at every oil change, our cars A CLK63 Cab and my E63 there is virtually no tick noise, even when starting in extreme cold weather here in Canada. This modifier is tacky to the feel and was told it will provide a protective layer of film between the cam and buckets as well as reduce bleed down when the engine is shut off. So far so good, minimal oil consumption and a nice quiet engine.
