ML fuel gauge acting funny

I have a 1999 ML430 with 43K on it. Just about a month or so my fuel gauge has ben acting funny. When I go to the gas station and fill her up...the gauge never goes all the way to the top. Just yesterday I was at the pump and I know I filled her up to the very top....the pump shut off on its own, and I tried topping it off so I would pay $22 and not $21.36 (OK you get my poit...it should be full). So I hop into the truck , start her up, and the gas gauge reads 3\4 full....never reads full.

another prob...about a week ago my tank read less than 1\4 tank. Went over a friends house..parked on a slight incline maybe 15 degrees..when I got back into the truck...the tank read 1\2 full. after driving for a bit the tank only went down a little and the gauge stayed above 1\4 tank....what is going on here??

as a side note...my check engine light came on...these two events must be related. I have an appointment for the 29th of Dec.

is this going to be expensive. I'm going to the dealership so I know the answer to that question!

Fuel gage problem is not uncommon on earlier ML's. Most likely the fuel sender which is incorporated with the fuel pump needs replacement. The entire punp/filter and sender must be replaced. Had this on my 98 ML but never yet on my 02. Re the check engine light; only way to tell for sure is to interogate the computer. Could be related but not likely. Most likely its an o2 sensor or the MAF unit.

Does it work correctly after you have removed (and put back) fuse no. 5 at the right side of the feet of the front passenger?

Hope you are not still looking for that fuse box in the right kick panel on your 99 ML...... that started in 2001.

The 'pull the #5 fuse to reset the cluster' trick was for 2001 and 2002 year models.

Karl is correct, I'm sorry, I did not check the year.

But maybe your dealer can check the part no. of the fuel sender, the part no. for engine M113 should be A 163 470 27 94 and has changed to a new gold sensor A 163 470 40 94 from 2002 sept. 23th. on.

well luckily I didn't check for the fuse box...forgot all about it.
so what I'm getting here is that the fuel sender is not related to the check engine light....great, now I have 2 things to fix. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come!

I had the exact same problem. I complained to the dealership about it never being registered as full when filled up. They replaced the fuel sender unit. After a few more fillups after that, the gauge registers full all the time now. It was covered under warranty, as should yours.

Good luck!
