How am I supposed to reach the coolant temp sensor on the m272?

I’ve found the WIS and have the new sensor in hand but how on earth do you guys get your hand between the head and the firewall?!

Is this easily accessed from underneath and blind as it’s atop the bell housing?

Thabks guys!

Yes, at the back of the head, it has one bolt holding a plate. Remove that and then the sensor pulls out the head

You have no idea how much that actually helps! Thank you.

Any chance you can take a picture from the front the front bumper back with your finger tip on the bolt head? I have a feeling my 6’3 230lb huge hands simply wont fit back to where I can access the bolt between the block and firewall.

Thank you!

What is the issue? I have never had to replace a temp sensor on a 272 yet

So Ive circled back to trying to do this job, got distracted by my motorcycle.

I actually have the 272 in a w203, so the air pump is in my way. Absolutely impossible to access from the top of the engine. I was able to find one single post where it was mentioned that the air pump must be removed and then a pry bar used to move the engine/ massage the firewall away from the engine to allow the air pump to be removed to gain access to the coolant temp sensor bolt. This sounds extreme. Am I missing something here?

Im actually getting a code just for the "Coolant temp sensor below threshold" with a CEL and my gauge reads 1/4 temp all the time. The sensor was $11 and i expected it to be a much easier job to be honest. This is actually the very first issue I'm having with my w203 after 117,000 miles.

Your air pump sits in the front of the engine, your coolant sensor is at the other side of the head, at the back. There is no need to remove the pump, below threshold could mean the coolant is too cold indicating a thermostat issue!
