2014 Mercedes ML 63 AMG

I have a 2014 Mercedes ML63 AMG. The vehicle has 130k on it. Owned since 97k and have only had to replace one wheel bearing, the left front shock, and front breaks and pads. Generally, it runs and drives great. Previous owner religiously maintained the vehicle at Mercedes dealerships, which is the reason i bought it with the amount of miles it had on it.

Reason for the post the Transmission:

When its warm and up to full operating temperature, it runs and shifts really well. However, when its cold (i live in the northeast) the transmission runs horribly. It stutters, revs high just before it shifts, and generally feels like it needs replacement. Its that bad. When it warms up, it goes back to normal.

Does anyone know why that is? Or heard of that happening?

Appreciate any insight!

What does the transmission fluid and filter maintenance records look like? Fluid level could be off.

There was a “transmission service” done at the dealership at 75k. I believe that is just an “oil change” for the transmission. Regardless i plan on having another transmission service done next month.

The maintenance for that 7G transmission is 70K miles. Some think it is too long, and rather shorten it a bit, say 50K->60K.. The 2nd service will then be @100K-120K.. It seems yours is asking for service

It is supposed to be a full oil change + filter. However, not all service people do full oil replacement since some do not flush the torque-converter. Even more reason to shorten the OilChangeInterval

Attached is the service list for 130K and 140K for 2014.

Mine is 2013 ML63 and had the same identical issue when I first road tested...Drained/Replaced tranmission oil and filter...Inmediately runs like a brand new..flawless..hot or cold weather...

Mine is a harsh 5-4 downshift when cold.

We suspected a faulty valve body and had it replaced today. When trans oil temp is cold from 45F-70F the downshift is hard. As it warms up shifts totally fine.

curious to see what happens with this thread.

you can also try to reset it:

Turn the key to position 2. You should see all the dash lights come on. Do NOT start the car. Position II: You should hear two clicks and all your dash lights should turn on. Do not start the engine.

Press the gas pedal all the way. By pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor, you will activate the kick down switch. Keep the gas pedal pressed all the way to down.

Wait. Continue to keep the gas pedal pressed for at least 10 seconds.

Turn key to OFF, position 0. Don’t remove the key. Some models may need the key to be removed.

Release the gas pedal.

Wait 2 minutes. During this process, key is left in the ignition in the OFF position.

Start the car and drive.

Once you perform this procedure the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Transmission Control Unit (TCU) will work together to learn how you drive by monitoring your driving pattern. After you follow this programing method of the TCU / ECU drive the car for 15 min. Do not race the car, unless that’s how you plan on driving all the time. You should have a transmission that shifts smooth and normal. You may feel like you have a new transmission!

Sounds like a classic filter clogged and fluid low/old issue. Could also be the TCU acting up from getting bad signals when cold. I’d suggest what @mcamp001 said about resetting the TCU ( very detailed and awesome instructions btw )

Questions: Do you ever smell a burning scent? When warm or cold do you notice any slipping? Any leaking? Might not make it all the way to the floor, gotta get under and see if it’s wet. Any whirring noises when driving? Finally, have you noticed any delay in shifting even when warm?

If the TCU reset doesn’t work and yes was answered to any of the above questions, I would recommend finding a reputable Merc repair shop or Euro Trans shop in your area and have the transmission properly serviced. Full Flush, New OEM Filter and the proper Trans Fluid to the proper level.
If that still doesn’t fix it you could be looking at solenoid issues potentially.
Good luck and let us know how you ended up or what the actual problem was!

Cheers,
