2001 230 slk, 2005 s 500 4matic
Drjasa

I'm new to this forum and for that matter relatively new to Benz.
I have a bright red 2001 230SLK, sport package, recently purchased with 39,000 miles and in pretty much new condition; also a silver 2005 S500 4matic with 80,000 miles, looks and runs like new inside and out.
I recently became aware of a 2006 top of the line s63 AMG with every available option, 60,000 miles, well-maintained, for $30,000 at a reputable local dealer.
Would I be crazy to trade in the trustworthy s500 for this ? Don't really need 600 hp to drive the 5 miles to work, but these cars are just awesome. As nearly as I can tell, there probably would be a good bit more risk of expensive repairs with the AMG, and the S 500's are relatively predictable and durable.
It is an honor to be part of this group, and a delight to appreciate these elegant vehicles

I am not a mechanic, but am not aware of anything that jumps out.... But they are MB - and the repair bills can be high.... Get a quality check of the vehicle BEFORE purchase - but I'd go for it if the check comes back clean!!!

Ditto! Doc here too - but I could NEVER justify that kind of price tag!! For the price and the mileage - it sounds like you might be onto something!! If you pull the trigger - post pics! Good luck!

s63AMG now available, dealer asking 29,900

after carefully looking into future repair costs and my forseeable needs and driving the s500 around (its paid for) and listening to the magnificent Bose stereo playing hymns and talking to the local dealer and considering the speed limits anywhere around here, I have opted out of the 2006 s63 AMG, but will be happy to pass along the contact for this magnificent car located near columbus, ohio, and now up for grabs

There you go.... two extra patients a day oughtta put that bad boy in your garage!!

I'm a lowly PhD here - policy junket on a government salary (dare I say more)... Three years, no pay raise means I am going to be driving my 2011 for SEVERAL more years to come :-)

Have thought about it for an entire week. Talked to the local dealer about reliability and repairs. May not need for a long time, but $8000 for a total front brake job; all of the parts are custom and unique to Benz
Decided it's like marrying a supermodel versus the cute girl next door.
High maintenance, perhaps temperamental, questionable under the covers, total head turner, how will she age? (AMG)
versus cute, dependable, modest maintenance, still get you where you need to go, still runs and sounds very nice and likely to continue (S 500)
guess I will depend on the little 230 SLK for excitement for now

yeah, the government isn't very generous with me either. Medicare reimbursement is just above baseline expenses, Medicaid is well below it, and Obama care often has such high co-pays that no one can afford their care anyway.
Used to be a government PhD also with the CDC, got tired of endless bureaucracy
cheers

LMAO!! I've got a true problem.... my wife is convinced I need a 12 step program! 21 cars in 25 years....perhaps a bit of Attention Deficit??? I get car envy easily! In fact, with the nicer weather, I'm missing my Wrangler (top down, doors off) lineup!!! I have been successful telling my wife that it could be worse - I could be trading in woman as often as I trade in cars.... Not sure how much longer that will work....FREUD.... Damn him!

I'm about as bad
2001 toyota tundra, 1999 miata, 2009 camry hybrid, 2007 highlander hybrid, 2007 honda fit; now this damn mercedes fixation! Where will it end!

But its not an accident that the car companies use sex to sell cars!

Current down:

2011 MB GL550
2014 Jeep Overland Summit
2013 Jeep Overland Summit
2012 MB E550
2012 Cadillac CTS-V
2011 MB E350
2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2007 Jeep Wrangler
2007 Jeep Commander
2005 Dodge Laramie 1500
2001 Jeep Wrangler
1999 Chevy S-10
1997 Chevy Tahoe

Bar none - Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.... NOTHING, I mean absolutely NOTHING beats the functionality of a Jeep - especially on nice weather days (Spring and Fall) - when the top is down, doors are off!! Talk about car envy??? However, the OLDER 4.0L Rubi's are the better ride! The newer 3.6L Pentastar is nowhere as good as the more aggressive 4.0! LOVE me some Jeep! The Grand Cherokee's are nice too - but when you put the Overland the GL side by side - its a hands down for luxury - MB wins!

My dilemma - its hard to look "distinguished" in a Jeep - thus my penchant for the MB Lineup!

My wife has banned me from driving within 5 miles of my favorite car dealerships! She too "haf's her wavs" -

Cheers
