Question Thinking to buy R350 - How much should I offer?

OK guys.... been considering to get a used R350 myself as my "beater" car.

This is what I've found so far:
- Location NorCal
- Local stealers ask around $28-32K for CPO '06 R350. Mileage is between 18-35K. Most of them are barebones.
- KBB trade-in (updated or not) good is $19-20K and excellent is $20-21K.
- Manheim still shows $22-23K.
- From this thread (https://mbworld.org/forums/r-class-w251/250934-why-buy-r-class-there-deals-made.html), I see members got quite loaded & BRAND NEW for low 40's.

Considering all of the above... how much should I start for the following car?

Car #1:
CPO. Black on black, quite loaded (NAV, air susp, parktronic, heated seats, memory seat, pano, AMG package). Mileage is 31K. Asking price is $30.9K.

Car #2:
CPO. Black on silver, not so loaded (parktronic, heated seats, DVD rear-ent system, AMG package). Mileage is 27K. Asking price is $30.9K.

I usually aim for KBB trade-in good and excellent. So been thinking of starting at $22K OTD (and up to $24K OTD) to give some but not a lot of margin for stealers. But seeing Manheim price, I doubt these stealers would let it go that low.

What do you think? Is it too low? Would stealers think it was a joke? Or do you think it's too high? Or about right?

Go for 2007 model or if you can wait till Dec.; go for 2008 then. I know it doesn't answer your questions but 2006 has had some issues with tailgate; however the pricing looks good.

Reply to you...

Hi Zoink,

My CPO R350 has the following options:
Pano, Nav, 6-CD changer, power liftgate.
So it has reasonable options.
I am in SoCal, and the asking price was $29950 and I offered $26K and ended up at $26500 (which is not OTD price). The car was very clean In/Out with 26500 miles on it.

The car #1 and #2 look fairly equipped...please consider starting at around $24K if the car is what you like (color, options).

Pls let me know if'you made a good deal.

Thanks... if the only issue is the power tailgate (I didn't even check whether the 2 cars mentioned above have one), I wouldn't worry about it... I'd only buy CPO and would likely sell it again before the CPO expires.

stmifx: You said "pricing looks good"... Do you mean my pricing ($22-24K OTD) or stealers' pricing ($30.9K)?

Zoink,
If you can pull that off, please let me know too. I seriously doubt you can get either one of them for $22-24K OTD for a CPO with "AMG package" but $26-27K+ tax and fee should be very doable. AMG package by itself is a $4000+ option and it is highly desireable.

If you are willing to get a loaded one without the AMG package, I think $24K+tax and fee will be very doable.

Btw, you do aware the MB CPO is only cover 1 year or up to100000 miles AFTER the original warranty expire either on time or mileage. If you want 2 more year warranty coverage, I believe it cost about $2.5K or something like that. Personally, I don't find the MB CPO is as valuable compared to BMW or Lexus.

Good luck

Yeah, I doubt it also given the Manheim's prices...

'06 should have its new car warranty expire around end 2009 to early 2010... plus 1 year, so it would give me at least 2 years.

If I start at $22K OTD, I hope it would make the stealer add 2 more years of warranty (so until end of 2011 or early 2012) when we reach the deal. We'll see... I have yet to see the car first.

Today's used car prices at dealers certainly don't make sense... I've been considering a wide variety of beater cars... and none of them makes sense.

Brand new '08 R350 could be had for low $40Ks.... '06 R350 w/ 20-30K miles is only $10K difference?

Brand new '08 RX330 could be had for low $40Ks.... '05 RX330 w/ 40-60K miles is only $12K difference?

Brand new '08 Honda Pilot could be had for mid $20Ks.... '06 w/ 25-30K miles is only $5-8K difference?

Now beat this...
Brand new '08 Nissan Pathfinder could be had for under $20K.... '06+ still ask for $18-20K

Stealers has got to lower the price....

Not sure about other cars but your comparsion of the R's is not really apple to apple comparsion.

Low $40K R-class get you a new one with options similiar to a $25K used R's nowaday. P1 package in 2006 is closed to the P2 in 2008. 2006's AMG package also adds the 19 inches AMG wheels and that will easily set you back another $2K if you add them to your 2008.

If you add all those up, you are really looking at a $46K new vs. $29-30K used.

Anyway, let us know if you can get a killer deal and I am also very interested to get an AMG $25K myself.

Understood.... but brand new is brand new.... and I don't think the options add much values, if at all. Take a look at the inventory.... mileage dictates the price, not the options. I'm just lucky to find loaded ones... that's why I'm tempted but I don't think stealers would go much lower than $28K OTD.

We'll see... I plan to take a look at the car this weekend. If I could get $26K OTD w/ 3 years of extended warranty, I'd be happy already.

Zoink,

FYI, the additional extended warranty for 1 -year was around $1800. And I was told I get a $400 discount if I am a member of either Costco or Sam's club. And my CPO warranty expires in Aug, 2011.

If you know they're selling for $22-23k at Manheim (plus buyer fees, transport, recon, maybe brakes, rotors, tires, floorplan fees) that means the dealer owns the car for at least $23-24k, maybe more if they had to do brakes, rotors, and tires. Plus they have the cost of the CPO warranty in there. They probably own the vehicle for around $25k with the CPO in place and the vehicle fully reconditioned, possibly more if they did brakes, rotors, tires. So you want to offer $22k otd? Sorry, just doesn't make sense for them to sell you the vehicle for less than they paid for it auction, and include the cpo and tax. Even if you went "up" to $24k otd, you're still below what they even own it for.

I think for opt.1, it should probably go OTD for around $28.5 + fee's. The critical options *(because they're rare in this combo) are the AMG, pano & NAV.

For opt.2, I think that because the mileage is under 30k they're gonna stick to their price, but I would start out at anywhere between $24-26k and then go from there up to $27.5-28k OTD. You will probably have the best luck at having them throw in the ext. warranty or other options, with this one vs. the other.

But overall, even at $28-29k these are not that badly priced, as compared to other cars.

Thanks for all replies.... no, I didn't have a chance to see the car... the cars I was interested in were gone.

I've found another one... more equipped than #1 minus AMG package, 10K lower miles and $1K lower asking price. Looks good but...

I think I'm having 2nd thought... the CPO event is not that attractive (3.99% APR) so no reason for me to rush... I'll just wait until I really need a car (around end of this year).... hopefully, by then, the price has gone down couple grands more (sorry, for current owners....).

Smile $24,500 2006 r350

Just bought it in Dallas. 19000 miles. Very basic. Black/tan, heated front seats, 6 cd changer, auto tail gate lift. In good shape. 18" wheels. Drives and looks good. I think I got an ok deal. Have been looking in Dallas for a while and haven't found anything with this low of mileage for under $26.8k.

Hi hurleygirley,

Congratulation on your new ride. Does your R350 have navigation and is it a CPO? I think you had a good deal.

I've got mine (CPO, 26500 miles, navi, 6cd changer, auto tailgate, pano roof)in July for $26.5K.

I just gave back my R350 off lease. My final deal on the buy out was 26k for a car that stickered at 65k new. That car was basically fully loaded except distronic and keyless go.

There was another one that a friend gave back (well a different friend bought it) and it was 24k. That car had only 7k miles in 27 months howerver. It had far fewer options.

Auction prices are pretty low. Look for a nice R500. The 350 is really slow. The mpg is not that much worse as the 350 has to work pretty hard to keep moving while the 500 has the needed tq to keep that object in motion.

Finally.... its the worlds best daily driver around. I paid 367 a month for a 66k car and loved the thing every day. Nothing better exists for taking people out to dinner in or hauling things around. It is a great useful car that is cheap only because people dont like the looks.

If you get Airmatic you will be SHOCKED at how well it corners in sport mode. You will scare some pretty sporty cars on freeway interchanges! I put Pirelli P-Zero Rossos on mine and it really was a hilarious car to drive.

In Barry White tone: Damn right.

I have a R500, loaded. The airmatic is a must. The car handles like a sports vehicle, and yes I have scared some people on the road. My wife has as well, as she normally drives it and pretty fast. Usually people ask: What is/was that? Many people loved it, and said they wanted one. Go figure?

On what you should offer: In my experience, I got it for $35K with a clear bra installed. The R only had 11K miles on it when bought.

They are in the auctions for 27-28k and you can get a nice one loaded for about 31k at a dealership. The market for these cars is just very weak. Heck any used car in general is soft.
