R350

Hi,
Need some info here for a R350, got a 7 months old baby so better get a familly car so R class looks not bad and fit 6 people. The only concern is the gas 21/15 MPG, same as my 06 E55 ..... how come this car consume so much gas ? how much this car total weight ?
the engine must be the same as E350 so the reliability must be good in engine. How about the electronics ? any problem with this car ?

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanx !

2008 VW GTI
I drove my wife's 06 R350 to work yesterday. Mostly highway, 70-85 MPH for 33 miles. No cruise control. I got 24 MPG, I was trying for 25 but hey...

I got 23 MPG on the trip home. There was an accident where I had to stop for a few minutes and I also played with the button shifters.

We traded a Honda Element for this R350. That thing got around 22MPG with a 4cyl.

Nearly 5000 lb for the R350 - over 5000 lb with a V8 in it. The R class is one of the longest passenger vehicles on the market. AWD adds a lot of weight. And don't forget about an additional row of seats, more glass and metal than a four door sedan. A taller roofline doesn't help aerodynamics either.

As for reliability, the Alabama built cars' engines and drivetrains come from the fatherland (please correct me if I am wrong someone). I had a 2000 ML and that was a known problem car. But the engine and drivetrain was bulletproof.

Getting 24 mpg highway is stupendous in this car! But for city driving, that is where a four cylinder outshines this beast.

R350 4-matic
Yep, 5000 (4940)lbs is a real beast to haul around. I get an average of 19.8 combined and when I do some highway driving I can get easily 22 while driving 70-75mph. No real problems yet, and the engine has been outstanding. Some software issues w/ shifting, but everytime I go in for service I just have them update, and it's like new and it costs me nothing.

You could get a diesel, in which case you'll get an engine with more torque than the 350 and one that burns fuel that costs the same as regular. 350 requires premium.

Thanx to your replys, are they all 4Matic ? I think 4Matic is an option right ? In LA area there is really no need for 4Matic... no snow and no much rain.... so without 4Matic the gas milleage should get better.

hi Charly:

Have you done any research on this car other than on this forum? Looking on MSN auto or edmunds or anything? Also, have you gone to the MB website to build your model to see what options are available?

Asian- you have the patience of a saint. Too bad people don't use the search function and read the long list of posts which talk about gas mileage, seating reviews, reliability, etc.
