P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature

Anyone get this code on their R before? From searches in other forums it sounds like I need a new thermostat, does anyone have a DIY?

No one has a DIY for R350 thermostat replacement?

I was surprised there was only one post in the forum with the word "thermostat"...and it had no replies. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Pulled code P0128 this morning....figuring first step is to replace the thermostat. Found the part number and DIY for the same part on a C300. It might be helpful, but I don't know how similar our cars are to the C300.

Looking at the link provided, it looks like the sensor is part of the housing. Follow the upper hose to the part. The R500 part is different so make sure you have the right part. The link provided is for the R350. It has a good installation video with it that shows the sensor

I have a 2007 C230 and got the CEL with a P0128 code yesterday.
It looks like the thermostat, sensor and housing is an all in one deal at about $100, is this correct? It looks semi-difficult to get at as the lower bolt is behind a belt pulley.
Has anyone done this job and how frustrating was the hidden lower bolt to get at?
Can the thermostat be separated and replaced alone? Less money? It looks like it's separate until 2005?

Follow the link above, posted by Brian.Grace, in the thread. If you go to that link you will find a video by FCP Euro. The person in the video shows how to do the whole thing. If I recall correctly, he even tells you Torx sizes and he mentions removal of the idler pulley.

IMHO you should also replace the upper hose if it'/s original. 6 yrs is getting up there for a rubber hose and in all likelihood the fitting will leak when you put it back together. At least I find this to be the case when I have messed around with cooling hoses. 6 yrs is also a while on antifreeze. I think that is near end of life as per MB.

Starbound thanks for pointing out the video Brian posted and the advice on the hose and coolant. I looked at the part but didn't scroll down far enough to see the how to video. It doesn't look difficult, I will give it a go. My old 88 E300 had so much room around the engine the C230 is much thighter but following the advice of FCP it shouldn't be a problem.

Off topic, are you finding your coolant low warning indicator coming on with the cold temp? With this cold weather my wife is telling me its coming on in the morning and then shuts off after a few seconds. I don't like sensors that misbehave since its human nature to ignore them after a while. Yet, its damn cold to be working on the vehicle.

I'm not getting the low coolant light, just the CEL and when I had the code read P0128. It has been unusually cold here in TX the last few days but the coolant temp warms up and shows just under 80. I hope it warms up by the time my parts come in, I don't have a garage heater.

Job Completed

I just replaced the Thermostat / housing / sensor. It took about 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a casual pace. Following the above video link from FCP was a great help.

Question: Will the check engine light go away or will I need to go have it cleared?

Usually codes reset themselves either when the problem goes away or after a series of start/drive/shutoff's

Did it fix it?

Did replacing thermostat fix it? I live in FL its spring and I too got the low temp code, which I can assume can only be a faulty sensor.

Yes all is well after the replacement. The Check engine light went out after a week. No problems since then.

This forum has a lot of great information! I recently bought a 2007 C230 and am getting ready to change the thermostat on it. This video was exactly what I needed.

One more question: Does anyone have torque specifications for the idler pulley bolt and the thermostat bolts? The guy in the video just says "snug" for the thermostat bolts which, for me, doesn't help all that much.

2009 R350
My 2009 R350 has a message to Tap off coolant. I guess I need to add coolant. I bought coolant from the dealership and gave me a "blue" coolant. However, when I looked at the existing coolant in my R350, it is colored "yellow". Can I mix yellow with blue coolant? Please help. Thanks.

Yes, you can mix them. They are compatible. I honestly think they just change the colour once a decade so they can tell how old the coolant is.
