You should take it to a dealer, they will let you know the error codes from this problem, but the W220 has a history of problems, my 00 S430 had about 10K in repairs in the 6 months I've owned it. But 02 seems to be a much better year as I have heard.

Is there anyway we can do DIY for this SRS problem? The nearest dealer is 100 miles from me. Thank you

Every SRS component has a individual ID which needs to be stored in the controller. If the diagnosos identifies the the faulty part it needs to be replaced NOT repaired. This is the reason you need the Star Diagnosis, normally only the MB-shops have. This is what my MB technician told me. They replaced the Airbag sensor in the steering wheel, when the SRS light came on and never went off. The reason was (my guess) that they tried to get rid of squeaky noise turning the steering wheel, and sprayed WD40 or some other agent into the room under the air bag. The squeaky noise stayed and the SRS light came on. Under warranty they had to replace a bearing of the steering column, which made the noise. Big deal, because they have to partly dismantle the gear box. Finally I found out this bearing noise was a failure known bei DC and all the shops were supposed to be informed about this.

I was told that the airbag still works in the event of an accident. Also 99.99% of the time I am the only person in the car and so if I have another accident the drivers airbag is supposed to work as normal without the SRS. Also if it was that important it would be fitted in every car and be a testable item in the cars annual roadworthiness test over here. Guess one day I might fix it though

I don't believe this. SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System. As the phrase says there is more as just the driver's airbag. e.g. It is the belt tensioner which may be even more important in a head-on collision than the air bag. (trust me, I had this experience with 70mph) W/o the tensioner I would most probably not write any posts here anymore.

I know the problem is a loose wire in the passenger sensor mat, so I suppose I will have to fix it this weekend. Its just that i only drive 6 miles to work monday morning and 6 miles home Friday night plus a little at weekends and its a lot of work removing the passenger seat just to fix a frayed wire for the milage that I do, but as you say better safe than sorry.

Let us know after your weekend project. I do have a intermittent problem at the passenger side. I don't let anybody sit there now.

Same thing happen
Had the same problem where SRS ligts goes on, but in my case the Instrument Cluster was just replace so I just let the lights goes on. I think it is just an error on the lighting parts Hopefully SRS still works.
