Instrument Cluster Recall - S Class
Found this info. Don't have exact info to what manufacture years are impacted.
Anyone have more info or can confirm?
==========================================
For S Class
NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 06V028000
Component: INTERIOR LIGHTING
Details: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTAINS GAUGES AND INDICATORS THAT MUST BE ILLUMINATED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION.
Consequence: DUE TO INADEQUATE ILLUMINATION, THE DRIVER WILL BE UNABLE TO READ THE GAUGES AND INDICATORS, SUCH AS THE SPEEDOMETER, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Corrective Action: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULES. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON JUNE 10, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MERCEDES-BENZ AT 1-800-367-6372.
Units Potentially Affected: 36911
Recall Initiated By: ODI
Date added to NHTSA datbase: 02/02/2006
Internal use: 2/2/2006

2000 S'430
can some pleeeeeeease help me?
hey everyone,
I have a 2000 S'430
well.. I cant wait until june to get mine replaced, but i did send mine in to get fixed, got it back and it still doesnt work!!! sent it to www.4mercedes.com and spent about $645.00 total = which isnt bad compared to the dealership.. but i got it back and plugged it in, and it doesnt work.. but i may have contributed to the problem, I read in another thread that it may be a 5a fuse... so i took the one in the fuse box out and looked at it.. and it fell out of my hands.. and into the bottom of the box.. and through all that commotion I forgot where it went.. I also was told by the repair guy (cluster repair man) that I just needed to replace the 7.5a fuse... found one that was Blown, and I replaced it.. I actually replaced all the 7.5a fuses, i attached a picture.. i actually added one to the slot circled in BLUE, and the 5A circled in red - I"M not sure if thats where it goes.. i'm hoping someone out there can take a look at there's and see if where i have mine is correct... pleeeease help me.. I would really really appreciate it.. thanks fellow members...

Hi,
I saw your message and I know how you feel.
Check your cluster before install into your car. Get the 12v DC external power supply ( battery charger or old battery) connect (-) to pin 1 and (+) to pin 4. you will see the cluster will light up for a few seconds and you will hear the servo motors movement for gauges. If it does not light up or do nothing at this moment your cluster is still defective. If it does, then trace the problem on the car. Cluster pin # will see by shining your torch light and look closely into white connection port.

BUT IT WORKS!! they charged me a $20 bucks to check it out, but that wasnt bad at all - was SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE IT BACK!!! anwayz... guess i will wait till JUNE to get re-imbursed if the recall goes into effect then..

The right side of my cluster is "dim" in daylight, but no problems at night. I sent my service rep an email about the recall. Will let you know what he says.

The whole lite cluster went out. Speedo and nothing worked on it.
This was on an 2001 S430 with 60K miles

Actually had this fixed while car was under warranty. Half the lights on the speedo went out and the temp gauge was all over the place. Brought the car in scared it was over heating. They replaced with a new cluster about 3 months before th original factory warranty expired. Will I still need to follow the TSB?

CL Class 2000-2002 and 2004-2005
S Class 2000-2002 and 2004-2005
Per NHTSA letter of February 9, 2006. Sorry, I only have it as a .pdf file, which cannot be attached. However, it is listed on the NHTSA site at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...fsDocId=06V028 (the middle document, titled recall acknowledgement).

WOO HOO!
Page 5 of the third document in previous poster's link indicates that owners will be reimbursed for replacements made before the recall.
I paid $1200 or so to have the instrument cluster replaced in November 2004 at the dealership. It failed two weeks after my warranty had expired. Now it looks like I will actually be reimbursed at some point.

Mine works ok, but it will better to change for free. I just bought my S430 last month. I have registered on www.mbusa.com. Will I be able to get this benefit? or the old owner will get the recall letter? Any input, please.

The recall letters won't go out until June 10. I don't think it will matter if you get the letter or not -- just take your Benz to a dealer and you should get the replacement (if your vehicle is otherwise eligible for the recall).
The goal of the recall is to replace all defective systems, regardless of who owns the car now. They should be able to determine if you are eligible for a replacement (i.e., if you have a defective system) simply be checking the VIN.
Of course if the prior owner paid for a replacement already, you won't be getting another replacement or a refund on what the other guy paid.

I hope this recall is for real. My car's cluster has started flickering, so I called MB dealer and then customer service couple of weeks ago to find out. Neither one of them were aware of this recall at that time.
