Congratulations!! Airmatic...visit workshop!!

Just when life is returning to normal after hurricanes and the holidays, etc....today I get the dreaded Airmatic warning!! I just happened to be 10 min from Palm Beach Mercedes so I pulled in and had a service rep take a look.
"Everything seems to reset and clear sir...but it would be best to make an appointment for us to look into it". The best I could do is next Monday. I asked if there was any chance that I could experience complete failure based upon what we were seeing today. "Don't worry about it too much" he said "If it fails we'll send a tow truck." Oh goody I thought, now I feel so much better. So much for plans for a road trip this weekend. Stay tuned. BTW...I'm still under the original OEM warranty.

...And I thought the '04-'06 W220s were flawless.

You probably have a leak. If your ride height it still relatively the same, the leak is probably slow. If you have to drive it for the next few days, avoid bumpy surfaces and speed bumps at all costs (I don't recommend driving the vehicle until you can have it looked at).

For all we know, you're car will be slammed to the ground tomorrow morning. Good to hear it is still under warranty. I went through this whole Airmatic situation two years ago. Broke my wallet out of warranty.

Good luck sprink.

Here is what happened: We went to the Dr.s office this afternoon. When I got out of the car I noticed that the compressor was running after shutting off and removing the key. I went in and came back out after about ten minutes and the pump had stopped running. I got in the car and started it and noticed that the height came up about an inch. Shut down again and went inside...compressor was not running. Left the Dr.s office, stopped for lunch...nothing remarkable. We left lunch and headed toward downtown to an appoitment. Suddenly I got the warning & drove directly to PBMB. While there the advisor put the "up & down" through it's paces and it seemed to work ok. Later when we got home I noticed that the ride height adjustment was not functioning. The firmness seems to work ok. I'm going to look for leaks...stay tuned.

Meawhile...back at the ranch....I found fuse F32 (air compressor) had blown. R & R fuse from MB tool kit in trunk. Restart, all airmatic functions returned. Drove around the block, pulled into the garage, shut off and got out. The air pump was still running. After 2~3 minutes I opened the underhood fuse box and pulled the relay ("O" I think) and the pump stopped. I repeated this series of gymnastics with the same result twice. I think the relay is bad or I have a leak (maybe) because I keep hearing a large whoosh of air escaping when I shut the engine down. This is a new sound that I have not heard before. I'm going to call MB Palm Beach in the AM & see if I can sneak in and get a diagnosis. I'm guessing that there may be an electrical gremlin at the pump/controler if it's not the relay. Stay tuned.

Update...can't get into the dealer untill next Monday but I made the appointment anyway. Meanwhile I swapped the 2: identical cross over relays in the front fuse box and every thing works fine!! MB dealer wants $59 for their relay so I called my wholesale bud who will have one this afternoon for $40. The MB part number is 0025421319 which crosses over to Bosch part No. 0986332040. I'll replace the one I swapped to the "N" location which controls the secondary air pump (probably controls some interior gizmo so I will replace it today) with the new one I am picking up later.

Ok...having said all of that the question comes up "why bother"? Answer, I need the car to be available and not sitting at the dealer for a week waiting on repairs. I'll take it in Monday for the scheduled appointment and let them check it out via the trouble codes in the computer. I think it's not a bad idea to have a spare airmatic relay on hand for us W220 guys ....just in case.

Well...after driving around this evening after swaping relays......(drum roll) every thing works fine!!! Anyone up for a massive group buy on airmatic relays? I think every single one of us needs to have at least one as a spare. How many W220 owners do we have on this board? We might be able to get the price on these damn things down to under $20 each.If one of these things go's bad and you burn the airmatic pump out...in a very short time the vehicle will become totaly immovable. At least with a flat tire you could still drive on the rim. If you find yourself in BFE and this happens, a spare relay might be the only thing that gets you moving again. Food for thought.

Good Idea..

I'm going to check that part number with some Bosh vendors I deal with to see how cheap that relay really is...

The dealer in NYC Manhattan MB sells slightly more than $20. I can't recall exact figure.
I replace once a year as a cheap maintenance.

What's the name of the dealer? I'll contact their parts department and get them to send a few...I'll give them my Fed Ex No.....I just paid $42.60 tax inc. wholesale. Twenty bucks is the right number.

BTW...just spoke to a guy with a 2006 G500 from South Africa in the gas line at COSTCO. He said in the bush of Africa every body knows to have a couple of spare relays or you just might walk home...if you suvive the walk!!

Beside lionj remark: how does one find all the MB partnumbers. And how can you find the location of it on the car. Is there a website or something for it?

There is a fuse and relay list/chart in the tool kit in the trunk. It gives the location and type of fuse/relay and their respective function. You can call your dealer parts department to verify part numbers. The part numbers in this thread are for 2000~2006 W220 models (US).

Pardon my interference but why someone who owns Geländewagen built on a rugged steel frame need spare airmatic relays??? Just out of curiousity.

It's really sad when airmatic goes. Since my friend owns a dealership in Russia I can see how often that happens on our bad roads. But I assure you of this. Bigger the rims, more sooner airmatic will go off. It's a mathematical fact. Just replace the tops upon hairy cracks appearance along with relay and you'll be fine.

Once again pardon my cynicism. Signed in to provide you the info I originally wanted to share but stumbled upon this G500 airmatic relay blooper and forgot

Relay is only $16.50 over at Duval Motor Cars

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=213951

Search for 0025421319 right where It says "2 Search by Factory Part Number" and there you go!

I don't know...I mentioned airmatic to the guy and he told me about why he keeps spare relays. Made sense to me. I guess the exposure for failure is not in the frame but in the relay.

Thanks for the heads up on Duval Motors. I'll check it out.

I have a 7:30 AM appointment with the dealer in the morning. I've had no problems since I changed the relay. I'm going to put the bad relay in just before I take it in and let them code it out and see if any thing else comes up. I'll update when I know more.

Does anyone here happen to know the OEM part number for the repair kits for the front airmatic struts? Any help would be great.
