Service B results for my 02 S500:
Service B $530
Check eng lite Diagnosis $140
Mass air flow sensor (causing eng lite) $579
Air Filter $127
Fuel Filter $251
Spark plugs $677
Brake fluid flush $112
13-pin connector tranny (slight leak) $181

Which should I not do right away??? I'm thinking air and fuel shouldn't be too bad. I just don't like getting under cars anymore??

How many miles are on the vehicle? Also, do you have a warranty?

Also at Autohaus AZ you can buy the air filters for $31.00 They are easy to install.

Also from Autobhaus fuel filter $35.00 See Link easy to do -

I edited my post above with add'l info - Furthermore -

Does the warranty cover the Mass Air flow Sensor?

60K plugs - I have read where they are good for 100K - Do you have a rough idle or loss of power?

A trustworthy independent may be the way to go as the dealer seems to want to bend you over

Plugs are indeed good for 100K. Do you have the service booklet?

Also, the transmission leak was supposed to be fixed by a campaign,

TSB P-27_00-47A OCT 04. A good dealer would have gotten that before the warranty had expired.

Why wouldn't your warranty cover that? It is a known failure.

correct me if im wrong. but that's a TSB on the tranny leak/plug. not a campaign

TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) are not covered for free unless by warranty...
Recall Campaigns are free services that the dealer will do to fix the problem. the dealer chooses to do so.
NHTSA recalls are where they force the manuf. to fix the probs

read your service book

it will list exactly what service "B" covers for time/mileage.i do all scheduled service myself and document all checks and torques on a printout using the star service manual.the dealer is expensive but any mistake is no cost to you, that and peace of mind is what you pay for.they arent stealing, they are profesionals that should leave no trace of servicing your car just excellent quality/workmanship.That said.i could never pay what they are asking for the parts,i can do everything listed for approx $800 in parts and add a brake and tranny flush.you have to roll up your sleeves or open your wallet,it is a "S" class.in the back of our minds we all know what we are getting into when we buy these cars.get the "star service manual library" it is a dvd that gives you all tech info for servicing/repairing your jewell.only use indy mechs that come highly recomended, there are some horrer stories of owners who try to save money that way.

A campaign is not a recall. Yes, TSB. Once the warranty is past, you're stuck. But the dealer should have been looking for the leak per the campaign and fixing it per the TSB.

Dam you guys are sharp!! I have to check my warranty regarding the MAF sensor, but it's off the list if so. I have never seen a drop of fluid on my garage floor and the service advisor said it was a blown seal passing light fluid upon driving(minor-sounds like an add-on$$). The car runs smooth as silk so I doubt the plugs are faulty, they said they should have been changed after 5 years and claimed they are original which I believe is true. I'm sure I can at least change the air & fuel filter on my own. I do feel the sense of having a large shop(dealer) do the work and stand by it (peace of mind), but the idea of getting bent over pains me to no end. As of now, I might just have them do the MAF if it's not covered under my warranty and do the rest myself (plugs at 100K). Thoughts???

plugs on S500

plugs on S500 are 5 year or 50k miles, same for the fuel filter.if the car runs smooth, thats a good thing and good spark keeps the combustion chambers,valves,o2 sensors and cats clean and promotes full service life of these components.you can get a set of OE bosch platinum for less then a hundred bucks.i enjoy working on the S class and any time i can throw prescribed maint at it and not break the bank i jump at it.this weekend is a tranny/converter/cooler flush and filter.a fuel filter, cabin filters and spark plugs.the car is at the 51k mile mark.the plugs arent bad but the center electrode is erroding and the gap has changed.ill bet the plugs would go to 100k but why do it?.how much is a OE maf online?

My opinion

Service B results for my 02 S500:
Service B $530 - screw that, change your own oil.
Check eng lite Diagnosis $140
Mass air flow sensor (causing eng lite) $579 - ask them to clear the code to see if it comes back. If yes, probably replace.
Air Filter $127 - change it yourself
Fuel Filter $251 - might be easy, might be difficult
Spark plugs $677 - do it yourself, this is nuts!
Brake fluid flush $112 - if never done, have them do it.
13-pin connector tranny (slight leak) $181 - if no drips, have them pound sand unless they will do it under the TSB

2003 S430 Sport Package
I just had a Service B completed by my dealer on my '03 S430. Cost was $299. Service advisor recommended a brake system flush @ $69, so I had them do that as well. Advisor called me later in the day and said they recommended changing air filters @ $292, fuel filter @ $149, spark plugs @ $581 (even though they are good for 100K and I only have 50K on them, he gave me the 5 year speil also) and trans service @ $275. I declind the additional services. Yes, they are expensive cars and are expensive to maintain, but you don't need to get ripped. And apparently, dealers' costs are all over the map. I'm looking for a good independent in the Orange County/Riverside area, any recommendations?

Both my 2001 and 2006 maintenance books said 60,000/5 years for the fuel filter and 100,000/10 years for the plugs for the S500. V12 plugs are 60,000/5 year.

Are you quoting a published maintenance schedule?

Thanks for all the input! Went ahead with Service B+ diagnosis obviously and MAF sensor. Doing the air filter myself and brakes upon next service interval. Got service advisor to throw in chrome license plate frame for wife's b'day yesterday.

When I did service B on my car it included all fluid changes and Filters etc as part of the Package

Why is mercedes charging you extra for Fuel Filters and Air Filters?

just try to imagine the overhead of a dealership,i try to defend the dealers and the techs who support the cars that we enjoy owning/driving so much.yea they do have a huge markup but i have never had anything but a "catered to"thank you for spending your money here experience" at MB of escondido, and fletcher jones newport beach.screw it, someone is gonna end up with every penny we make.you cant take it with you.

Half this stuff you guys can do yourself.....In my own opinion if you can't change your own oil and air filter u don't need to be driving. ( fuel filter you can change with a pair of plyers and check engine light just buy the tool its $300 and read it yourself)
