Its still a grand around ebay, and you should see Lu Scola's build, http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...ouble-din.html . The rewire is just as much work as this setup is, all you have to do is run different leads to a new amp and connect to speakers or use a fiber optic adapter. I can't justify spending a grand to retrofit six year old technology. Just not worth it.

That is what I mean..Look horrible..They are about 650 Euro over here. And there is no re-wiring or work at all to fit it compared to what you are talking about with the work it is to fit the Pioneer. Well 6 years old yes but it depends on what your after as well..Good looks with MB look or horrible look with more features? I am looking into more untis as we speek to see how it will fit and look original. I am looking on a B-Class unit to see how it fits and so on..

Agreed. It looks worse and you have the problem of selling the car on. I wouldn't buy a W220 with aftermarket unit like that and not sure how many people would.

Nice job on the retrofit, looks great!

I have an March 1999 S 430 so i think it's a non DX version. Did anyone tested the new navi on the NON DX version?? I'm very interested, but i don't want to buy it all if it's useless on my car...

Thanks

Hi Chris,

I love your work. It looks just perfect. So I want to do the same on my year 2002 S600. My original system looks identical to what you had previously. So I blelieve mine will work as well. Can you tell me how much the new system costs. my email is abonemember@gmail.com.

I saw the parts list you have posted previously but where did you get your parts from.. Especially the command unit A2208205889 is hard to find. Maybe I can try to get it from the same source as well.

Another question I have is whether you can play DVD and Mp3 with the new system and whether the Navigation works.

Thanks for your help

You got PM...There is no DVD Comand that works in your car. Same with MP3. You need a non Mercedes standalone DVD unit for it to work.

The BIG problem with this before has been the absense of the converter.

Here is a list on what you need:

1. Upper wood panel

2. Lower wood panel

3. Comand unit A2208205889 (NOT A2208271442, Has no navi)

4. Gps antenna

5. Speed signal converter

6. Comand 2.5 and Comand 2.0 pinout so you know what to change

7. Map disc

Its not harder than this...I heard it might not work on early non DX comands. Not sure why not though.

I have done this on 2 cars now with both working perfectly..
hello Chris, nice facelift...

i did the same thing 4 years ago, and everything is perfect but the GPS...

my car is 2001 S430 and the comand unit donor car was 2003 S430...

i got everything i needed from the donor car, even his gps antena, but my navi still does not work...

actually not navi but the gps... i can put the map in, manually input my location, and the navi will work... but after driving for sometime, it gets lost since the unit can not receive the gps signal...

after reading your posts, i think that i probably need ## 4 and 5 from your list...

could you please PM me with the exact models of antenna and converter you used with some pics if possible, so i can get them...?

thanks in advance...

The converter has nothing to do with satelites. It converts the speed signal and can-bus signal for the buttons on wheel.

the buttons on the wheel worked on my car from the day 1 of this conversion... i just had to pair a correct data cables together, because the 01 and 03 colors were different...

so if now the car sees the satellites, you think i am OK...? or there might be a problem...?

thanks

No.You still need the speed signal to the comand to work. And that only works with the converter.

The navi wont understand that you drive the car when it dont get the right speed signal. So navi wont work.

but it works... i can input the address and it takes me there...

the only thing that i notice is that the navi gets the gps signal with a little delay after you start the car... it starts 'seeing' the satellites after 2-3 minutes of driving, but in a meantime the position changes on the map with help of some sensors built in the wheels i believe...
