For those that are interested in the group buy for the 2003 headlights, please note the following.
Yes, the group buy is still on. You MUST have the following requirements if you want to order the 2003 Bi Xenon headlights
You have an S500
OR
You have an S430 with Xenons as a factory option
It is incredibly expensive to retrofit a vehicle for xenons (let alone bi-xenons) onto a vehicle that does not have xenons as a factory option.
If you do not have xenons as a factory option, the 2003 headlights WILL NOT WORK and I recommend getting the non-xenon 2003 headlights which doesn't require the use of a plug adapter and is a direct plug and play. Price is about $500 per side or $1009 per set (list price). I don't know what the group buy is but if anyone is interested, please PM. This latter option is mostly for S430 owners without the xenon factory option.
If you meet the above requirements, here is the pricing breakdown:
Description Group Buy (RETAIL)
2003 Headlights Right Side $1199 ($1320)
2003 Headlights Left Side $1199 ($1320)
Adapter relay Connector (2 per set) $299 ($399)
Total $2697 (group buy) $3239 (retail cost) ***
***Does not include the cost of installation which is about $200-300 dollars

Ansonnn- who would install these lights, is it likely that a typical MB dealer would do this installation? Have you had yours installed and how did it go?
Thanks
Thanks
Crankin,
Yes, a MB dealer OR a reputable body shop can install these lights. It's a plug and play connector and the dimensions for the 03 lamps remain the same. Most dealers are okay if it's a direct plug in which the connector provides. Also, there is no 'switching on' of the xenon controls in the car's copmputer since you need to have xenons already as a factory option to make this work anyways. You can source the services of a body shop for this installation because they won't have to mess with the car's computer. The front bumper must be removed in order to pull out the headlights.

Are the xenon high beams also compatible?
Will the new light assembly "know" when to use the xenon high beam as opposed to the halogens?

Good question, ///MB.
Phil, did you get yours installed yet? Any pics?
Thanks

///MB,
Yes, the 03 High beam xenons will be compatible. How will the light assembly know? Well, that is the reason for having the adapter. There is an extra connector pin on the 03 lights that controls the shutter for the low and high beam XENONs and which is absent on the connector from the car side. The adapter bridges this connection and also resolves some of the voltage differences in powering the shutter motor. So when you pull the high beam lever for the 'old' xenon lights, it will activate the halogen high beam bulb. With the adapter in place when you pull the lever, it will signal the shutter motor on the low beam xenon to move to the high beam reflector position allowing for high beam xenons.
I haven't had a chance to do it on my car but the 5 that signed up have gotten theres with one guy being local and I got a chance to see it installed and the whole mod is very transparent with no glitches. I am waiting for my set to come in. It's about a week backorder on it. I will post pics once I get them and install them. Believe me, I am anxious to get them and take pics

Ansonnn:
Thanks for the explanation.
But, aren't there 2 different high beams? The regular halogens for the "flash" feature, which is activated when you pull the turn signal stalk towards you. While the bi xenon high beam is activated when you push the stalk forward.
Does it distinguish these two? Or, just use the xenon high beams all the time?
Thanks.

I am very much interested in changing out the headlights on my 01 S500.
However, Hans, my mechanic (who is new to me, but highly recommended by local owners as a knowledgeable independent) told me that the change out doesn't work. When pressed he defines doesn't work as causing nothing but headaches.
Any comments from someone who has had this conversion done?
I am going to check with a high end body shop to see if they will do the work and know anything about it.

so how much did the ones u bought from depo cost?Junior Member
They worked out to around to the equivalent of $1400 including shipping to the UK. I am really hoping that the beam patter is OK for use in the UK (they are designed for the US). The guys in Taiwan keep reassuring me that they will be fine, but I still have my doubts…
Oh well, if they don’t work, one of you guys in the US might get a good deal on a set of front lights. LOL.

I bought and installed these from (procarparts) myself about a year ago. It is not that hard to do, plug n play as long as you have the the hid hazy lense D2R setup which all 2000-2000 S Class had for the HID option.. The projector hid's are one of the most rewarding mod's I have done.Originally Posted by M Rippley
