Trying to get a little more growl out of the V12, so removed the rear mufflers and center resonators. The exhaust is still surprisingly quiet, definitely doesn't sound like a 5.8 liter

Questions: Is it the catalytic converters that are keeping it so tame? Also, anyone know what that vacuum valve is just aft of the center cats after the exhaust goes from dual to single? Is it a vacuum driven butterfly valve? I'm thinking maybe it's stuck in the lowest position and that's causing some sound 'deadening' as well. Can this valve be rigged to stay open?

Before people starting firing off at me, just wanna make it clear I'm not trying to make my S600 sound like a Honda Civic, rather, I'd enjoy hearing the V12 stretch it's vocal chords a little

Thanks in advance!

the 5.8 v12 is actually one of the sweetest sounding v12s when you open up the exhaust

take a listen, sounds like a Formula One race car....

Id install some electric exhaust cutouts, so you can flip a switch to run through the exhaust or straight pipes....

Jet,
Besides my EC tune, the exhaust mod is the best thing I chose to complete on my 600. I removed everything except the primary cats (primaries are tucked up and inside the engine compartment on the manifold downpipe) and had two straight pipes run out the back. In my case in also had electronic exhaust cutouts installed which allows me to open and close the exhaust from inside the car. This way I can still have mufflers attached and when the cutouts are closed, the car is very quiet. Then to run a hi flow, louder exhaust, I just electronically open the cutouts.
I love it.
Here is a thread about what I did with a photo....

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't that the same engine that Pagani used in their Zondas? The sound is very familiar.

The Zonda engine was an AMG produced 7.3 litre V12.

Wow...never in a million years would I have guessed that it sounded this good. Absolutely beautiful. Wonder what would have happened if they continued to pursue the old quad cam V12 in the big cars.

Actually, it's the same basic engine...the old DOHC V12 started out as a Benz engine and then AMG got a hold of it, eventually taking it all the way out to 7.3 liters. Pagani then started buying them from AMG, in 6.0, 7.0, and 7.3 liter capacities. No wonder those S600s sound like Zondas...basically the same engine.

top fuel exhaust!
id love to see one of you guys take the exhaust sound all the way. six 4 inch tube "up pipes" exiting the top of the fender on each side. number each tube with a corresponding chrome cylinder # medallion hung from a gold chain. the top of each tube should have a hinged stainless steel butterfly valve that will "flutter" at idle and jingle like a pocket full of quarters. at full throttle they would stand and underneath the logo "mercedes benz" ie 12 letters would illuminate with a heat sensitive glow in the dark metal alloy!

Tusabes what exhaust mods do you have? I cut the mufflers on my s600 and added dual faux AMG tips and it sounds very good.

Did you remove the resonators too? Sound clip?
I removed the resonators and center pipe replaced with 3" dual pipes to OEM S65 mufflers but I find it too quite still
