infra-red screen *pretty cool*
as we all know the new s has an infra-red camera, but i thought it displayed the image on the navi screen. i was wrong the speedometer becomes a screen and that is where the image is. the speedometer is an image on a screen. i think thats pretty cool.
pics and presentation
there are also many other pics and deailed pics.

I already *****ed about that. The nav screens in all of my cars are nearly impossible to read in direct sunlight, or with polarized sun glasses on a bright day. Having the speedo be an image on an LCD seems like a bad idea to me...

dude this car is off the leauge in technology, this is a dream come true,
Actually I was wondering why the IR display showed up on the speedometer area. it was posted as a small picture.

idont know about you guys, but i wont be using the IR during the day.lol. and it could be that it has an anti-reflective coating, similar to the sony DSC-T1 digital camera i have.

Well, looking at the pictures, you'll have no choice but to use that screen. The speedo appears to be a graphic on an LCD that goes away when you activate the IR. I hope they made it more visable than my COMAND screen in direct sunlight...

Mercedes all the way!
i was jz browsing when i saw this pic:
http://www.maybach.ru/w221/index_en.php?ind=16
which set me thinking: i wonder if you can switch between the two screens i.e. have the speedo on the COMAND screen and the COMAND right in front of you, if you wish.
look at the third button on the left of the COMAND screen, just above the brightness control: it looks like something to switch screens, doesn't it?
btw my S350 is in the tropics and i've never had any trouble seeing COMAND in any kind of sunlight we get here. with the hood covering both screens in the W221, i'm sure seeing the screen isn't going to be any sort of trouble.

ruykava...
sorry to say that last two COMANDs in my cars were indeed difficult to see in bright sunlight. a visibility improvement from MB would improve my impressions of the unit.

well bud you dont have to worry about not being able to see the speedometer in sunlight becuase why would you use your IR camera's in sunlight?
IR is more of a night time instrument that is why mercedes decided to put it in the display panel.
