The trunk looks like it was done by Bangle. Rivals the 745 for ugliness from the rear and looks like its not closed all the way in the side shot. That is the second S class in a row I haven't liked.
I'm hoping it looks better in person.

Good bye new LS 460, 750li, A8, and any other damn full size automobile that comes near it. By far the best exterior and interior I have seen from any car compnay to date.

I saw the car in real life too, and suprisingly, both my wife and I have same opinion about the look (it's often that hers and my opinion about Mercedes look are opposite).
One word for it: UGLY. The W220 looks way better. I hope the W221 with sport package will enhance the look vastly, as the "regular" model is as ugly, or uglier, as the 2003-2005 BMW 745 (the 2006 does look better).
The instrument cluster look pretty cool though.

i think it's so cool looking. the reason the trunk looks "unclosed" is just because of the light reflecting off it.
i agree the W220 is the more elegant car - but now when i see it, it looks old-fashioned already. it's time in the sun is up.
and i can't believe anyone thinks this looks like the 7. that was like a big, solid, lump of metal crafted with no artistic sense at all.

Looks nice. I think it looks best in darker colors. I don't like how the front fenders extends into the front bumper and headlight. I also don't like the two black strips in the taillight. Other than that it's awesome. Wish I could have seen one.

Saw the new S two days ago. Went to a "release party" for the new R-class and the S was there as well. Currently there are three - not final - in the US. They said they were moving them around the country to get glimpses of the new S out of the road. The one that I saw was Silver with Charcoal inside.
All I can say is that I liked the spy shots...and in person it is SO MUCH MORE. Inside and out it is great. Wasn't sure about the i-drive concept but it's really easy.
It's good to see MB putting a little muscle look back into the S - it doesn't look so much like the generic sedan that it has become. Had a current S next to it for a bit...it made the current S look positively bland.

To say the current S is "positively bland" might be a little harsh. I still think the current S is "classic" MB in it's lineage. If I wanted "muscle" in my cars then I would probably look elsewhere...maybe a CLS.

This view looks not so great...front heavy and fender lines dive to the street. There is no flow of the front lines to the sides and rear.

yea but youre comparing apples to oranges, your car has the amg body kit and the new w221 doesnt have one. i think the new s with the amg kit looks like a beast here

Mercedes all the way!
haha, in truth, i like both the W220 and W221 front ends. the "two-step" lights on the W220 looked rather strange initially but has really grown on me. too bad several ricemobiles are copying it (toyota crown, nissan fuga, hyundai sonata (old) etc).
Merc certainly took a risk with those fender flares, but i like them - first time i've seen big fenders that aren't too wallowy nor too apologetic (like on the Mondeo or Focus). maybe i'm a bit bling bling :p and it's interesting how the headlamps wrap around them to the sides - details like this draw me to Merc. hah, if most people got used to the 7-series, they'd most certainly get used to this.
end of the day, most people who buy an S (or something in that class) won't give a damn what others think about their taste - u're confident enough of your own decisions

The second point...even with the AMG package, the W221 front end "buldges" at the sides (in my opinion) and makes the car look "front heavy" while doing nothing for the overall design.
As I indicated I may change my mind when I see the car in person...but right now I do not like the front end fender treatments.

Look back over the variations of the S-class. It's only the 220 that has been sleek. The others have always had a stronger stance - even when very boxy.
I like the current S - it's not that I don't think it's a good design; it's just that the current S doesn't have much that distinguishes it from other large sedans - it's got that same generic look that most sedans have.
The new S has much more distinction. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
