Autocarmag - 9th Jan 2006
Hi, there is a comparison in Autocar magazine between the W221, A8L, and XJ. i'm unable to get Autocar right now - wonder if anyone's read it and can give a general conclusion of what happened? thanks!

S-Class Vs. A8 and XJ .. oh yea, that was fair. HAH. Those aren't competitors .. thats a cheap win for the S-Class.

I'd rather see an opinion backed up with facts and statistics. Does this article have them, or is it just another typical "xxx sucks, and yyy is awesome because we say so!" article?

well, Autocar is pretty respected, and i finally got down to reading the article.
it's clear that they are in love with the S500 (that's S550 for the americans) even though it is a short wheelbase version. however, apparently the 7G transmission was still busy learning during the test period. also, they said Airmatic wasn't perfect on a sudden change of surfaces, although it was much better than the system on the A8L and XJ. the only advantage they gave the A8L was the longer wheelbase, which the S500L will demolish; and the cabin design, which the reviewer personally preferred - although (if i remember correctly) he mentioned quality was on par.
all in all Autocar felt the S500 is not just a notch, but three above the XJ and A8L. in other words, a clear win =)
