MP3 woes

I copied some music files in mp3 format from Rhapsody to a sandisk 1.0gb SD memory card, then inserted that into a PC adapter card, then put it in my car. Ive gotten music to play once or twice, but usually it just locks up. The comand will show the song title, etc., but wont play. If I lock the car, and wait a minute or two, and return to the car, sometimes the mp3s will play, but when it locks up, it also wont allow DVD audios to play. The DVD audio fuction returns everytime, after I lock and unlock the car. Maybe Im formatting the music wrong?? Im new to mp3s. Any ideas??

There is a detailed explanation in the Manual on the formatting of the card and what formats the system will accept. I did not read it in detail but I know it is there. It may simply be the wrong format or compression that is locking the system. I also am not an expert on MP3 and audio formats...the iPod makes it so easy...why don't they have that in the car or at least the kit available?

Mp3

The details on MP3 are on page 104 of the manual. Specifies the specs and provides details on the file structure, etc.

Make sure the mp3 files are not protected by some DRM technology - they won't play if they are.

I agree. I will be glad when the Ipod adapter is ready. That will be much easier, for dummies like me...

I will be just as glad as you, as will thousands of other owners.

Unfortunately I have a nasty feeling MB may not offer us one given the other media capabilities they have built in as standard. An example is flash memory cards which are now commonly and inexpensively available in 4Gb capacity, which can certainly store a lot of music in MP3 format. The designers would be thinking why the heck we don't go that route instead.

Well, it's already been announced and is listed in the S accessories catalog with an availbility date of Q2 2006. See this thread for a scanned in image as well as part numbers:

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w221/140850-ipod-integration.html

Personally, I see the PCMCIA slot as a way to pacify non-iPod owners, although a simple 3.5mm aux in jack would have been better. iPod integration is expanding through the MB line as new models replace older ones. It was a sorely missed feature in the W220 and I was disappointed to find out that MB was just going to wait to implement the kit in the W221 rather than retrofitting fro the W220. Given the iPod's market share in the portable MP3 player market and the fact that many other car companies are offering such a solution, it would be ridiculous for MB to roll out a new flagship sedan that didn't have iPod integration as an option.

Jeff

Mercedes all the way!

yes - Windows Media Player makes MP3s from your CDs, but not from songs bought from iTunes Music Store.

the songs from iTunes are DRM protected - they will not play except on your computer, and on the iPod. and they will not play in Windows Media Player either. there is currently no (legal) way to make them do so, although the French are trying to pass a law to change that.

however, songs you made from your own music CDs and then transfer to your iPod, and now want to copy to a memory card, should be playable.

the most likely reason for your problems (given that the song sometimes play) is i guess that the format is not correct. you can use Windows media player (and i guess iTunes - sorry, don't use it myself) to re-rip them to a compatible format... but it'll take time!

The way to do it in iTunes is to burn the ITMS (iTunes Music Store) songs onto a CD. It has to be a regular audio CD so make sure your burning preferences in iTunes are set to that (Preferences -> Advanced Tab -> Burning sub-tab -> Disc Format: Audio CD). Once they are burned to a standard audio CD, you can re-import the disc as non-DRMed MP3s. It's not a great solution especially if you have lots of ITMS music, but it works.

There was a program called JHYMN that would unlock these songs for you directly without doing the above, but it has been nroken since iTunes was upgraded to version 6. There was another similar program called Playfair, but I think it was removed from the site it was posted on. It may be available elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!!

I had previously enquired at the local MB dealer and they were clueless. Now this is just in time for my new car due to arrive mid April (delay due to my ordering some extra kit). Thanks again.
