S550 has 7 speed tansmission, but why the highest gear level in manual mode is 6? Could any one tell me what is the reason?Thank you

I don't own a 550 so I can't really answer that question, but my thoughts are that if you are in the mood to be operating this car in manual mode, you are most likely in the twisties that WSH travels and you probably won't be needing 7th gear as you'll be shifting in and out of lower gears. In fact, I can't see why you would shift out of 5th while using paddles/buttons.

I do know that this is not common to just Mercedes cars as my wife's former Lexus IS300 had paddle shifters and when you put the shifter in S mode, it wouldn't go into the highest gear either probably for the same reasons.

That's perfectly normal and that's the way it is designed.

My understanding of the gear box is this:

The 7 speed on the merc doesn't have a "manual" gear box in the sense that you can select the gear you want. When you put it say in "2", you haven't selected the 2nd gear, you've only told the car to only use gear 1-2. When you put it in "6", the car will use gears 1 to 6. It's meaningless therefore to select "7" since in D, the car will use all 7 gears anyway. The gearbox isn't intended for sporty driving, really more for going downhill or similar situations.

Check out page 372 of the manual.

if you want an awesome "manual-matic" gear box, check out the new porsches with PDK!!

Euro cars have a third tranny program mode "M", I believe AMG and perhaps some other US models have this too. But manual gear selections on basic auto boxes anyway aren't giving too much of a sporty drive compared to using the S mode and a bit of aggressive acceleration pedal use.

7the gear seems to act like an overdrive in my experience. When cruising in auto at highway speeds if you down shift to 6th, you will notice a jump in RPM's.

Since the S550 does not have M (manual) mode like some other models, the gear selector is more like a gear limiter as described here.
