Unrealistic Dealers pricing S550's

I am seeking a replacement for my totaled E500 (18 wheeler nearly killed us!). Since the E500 did its job so well in protecting us, I am seeking one of the world's safest cars- the S Class.

I am searching for the best possible deal on a new or lightly used S550 4Matic. One dealer with my color preference lists about $84K for a loaded 2008 with 13,000 miles. Yes, he was willing to come down to $74K, but they refused what I thought was a good offer of $70K.

Am I crazy? Or is he?

I am looking for a loaded vehicle in great shape and in this market, I am looking for a really good deal. I am sure the insurance adjuster will give peanuts for my lightly used 5 year old E500 that the truck totaled.

Fraser, I am considering that one, which is optioned well, but is not my color of choice. I would have to add $1200 to $1500 in transport fees.

Gellie, I have read your opinion on previous threads. But, I have done some homework. You have NOT substantiated your findings of $30K off new 2008's. To be honest, I do not believe that there are decent new 2008s with decent options and decent colors for anywhere near that! I did find a new one without hardly any options- No keyless Go, No heated seats- for low $70s, but that's about it.

Gellie, If you can find me a new 2008 S5504Matic in Iridium Silver with Dark interior well optioned, P3 or at least P2 with Distronic Plus, for $30K off, then I will give you $1000 in finder fees!!!

Need to value your time in due diligencing all kinds of new/used cars

Prefer safety of a new, '09 car from a well-reputed dealer (most of which rarely offer lowest price new cars vs less well-reputed dealers)....less unknowns re: prior abuse/repaired damage, etc; fresh, new tires/brakes, etc; lemon law protec, etc

Suspect cost of leasing a new, '09 S550 to one's spec is not materially more costly than wasting endless hours investigating new/used cars at dealers/pvt owners in sometimes distant locales....time is far more valuable than money to most S-Class buyers (as is one's health, part of rationale for driving a supposedly costly new S-Class)....in life, price often does not reflect value when one properly values time, health/safety, hassles and other factors

These deep discount are more visible in areas where the economy is hardest hit (e.g. Las Vegas, Arizona, Florida, California, New York, etc.). I don't think it's pervasive enough to say it is occuring consistently enough across the country. Are you're interested in a loaded black 07 with tan interior, amg sport package, P3 and only 7k miles for $62k? I'm sure you can get it cheaper than that once you start negotiating.

ignore gellie's posts. he is only here to antagonize s-class owners. he reports to drive a 750 and for some reason feels the need to be offering 'off' advice to otherwise serious s-class owners. he is a burr under the skin. dismiss his opinions straight away.

I have no idea about the US pricing but just wanted to say that your offer above to pay $1000 for the guy to find the car you want at the price he claims they are selling.

A pity we have to ask for back up but that is the outcome when so many post their incorrect views as facts, either intentionally or unintentionally.

I hope you find the car you are after, you deserve it.

emagni, please pm with info on the vehicle Black 2007, although that is not my color preference.

Thanks to all for their replies.

If you have to have Distronic Plus on a 2008 4matic, they aren't that common. When I bought in July, to get an option combo I found acceptable (and Distronic Plus was a must-have for me), I had a car shipped from MN...I am in CT.

Having recently purchased a new 2008 4-matic P3, pano, AMG package, +extras car I can verify that the discount is in the 15-20k range off MSRP. That said, selection is limited at this point. I had to source the car from the midwest but it was worth it for the discount. I'm not aware of '09s being reduced to any significant degree.

With some flexibility I think you can find a great deal on a new '08 as opposed to buying a used one as the price differential isn't that great. My local dealer was actually quite helpful in locating, you may want to try the same approach. Good luck!

More importantly, glad you and the family are OK. No question an MB is worth the price....

I was recently at the dealer looking to pick up another car and my salesperson told me that the s550's were being discounted around 22-23k. I told him about the 30k discount and he told me that they had not sold one or heard anyone sell one for that price.

Now for the s550 4matic that you are looking for, does it have to be an 08 or can it be an 09? You can get a better deal on the 08, but check if they have upgraded anything in the 09s. Also, it is going to be difficult for you to find the exact color and options you are looking for because towards this time, the left overs tend to be vaguely optioned.

Ok if 4Matic is a must:

S550 30Kmi $68k

09 S550 with 215mi ends in 17 hours

Outside of that, hit the dealer again...

That 09 S550 says it has the P3 package but I do not see the button on the left of the lights knob that shows the nightview assist - nor do I see the button for the headlamp washer on the right of the lights knob.

Has something changed?

I thought I was seeing things too so this confirms that they are not using the right photos or this car doesn't have the headlight washer or the nightview assist.

Headlamp washers from 2008 on in all Mercedes are controlled automatically. I think they wash the lights with every 5th wash of the windshield.

Stupid in my opinion, I would like to be able to manually control this, but this was a global change to MBs.

Here are the changes to the S-Class for model year 2009. Not really enough in my opinion to warrant getting a 2009 if you can save tens of thousands on a 2008:
  • Premium 1 Package standard: (includes heated and active ventilated front seats, and electronic truck closer standard)
  • Wood/leather steering wheel standard
  • Different wheel standard on S550 non-sport
  • Gear shift paddles replace shift buttons
  • Push/pull window switches
  • HOLD convenience braking function
  • All season tires come with 19" wheels
