Motor Trend - S550 vs. A8 vs. 750Li

For your reading pleasure....
Impressive results for an impressive car - and this is not the face-lifted car. In my opinion, the author truly understands what these cars are all about and does a good job of capturing it.

Thanks! I wish I could have one of each. They are all fine automobiles.

Indeed thanks for posting

Given most car mags are notoriously pro-BMW, pro-Audi, was amazed to see such a critical review

BTW, chk out the lukewarm review of Panamera Turbo on autocar uk (online)

Price a PanamTurbo on P configurator and it costs roughly $180K (w/needed perf and luxury options) and still lacks so much of tq, tech and safety to which one is addicted if one drives any 600/65

Will be fun to drive Panam Turbo vs '10 S65 to see how it really drives, esp as press usu downplays P's many, many engineering weaknesses in glaring lack of innovation, yet many mechanical/electrical reliability issues

Inside line states that the 7 series is one tof the finest autos in the world...motortrend did not have the active steering...extended leather and the ceramic options really compliment the interior..

I think BMW is in serious financial trouble.
They can't even payoff those reviewers anymore, LOL.

Hence comes a critical review

W221
Interesting read, thanks for posting!
One thing that felt strange inside the new 7 series was the location of........the door hanle on the inside of the door! It's located quite high almost immediately bellow the window compared to the midle of the door on S class. When I got back into S class the interior felt so elegant, classy and simple - there's something timeless about W221 design.

Wow, I never thought I would see a brand new BMW relegated to third place in any comparison in this magazine.

The article (for once) captures the understated elegance of what the S-Class is really all about. It's not about throwing in tons of technology for its own sake - its how that technology is packaged and presented. The BMW misses the point and is "an instruction manual on wheels" Ouch!

Please stop posting. You embarrass yourself in every thread.

Please provide us with the meaningful technology and safety advances found in the 600/65 that are not found in the yet unreleased Porsche. I'll wait for a response that will never come.

Engineering weaknesses? What would those be? Since you know absolutely nothing about cars, I'm surprised to hear you espouse about the engineering quality of possibly the most legendary and well respected german manufacturer.

I'm also impressed you know about the mechanical and electrical reliability issues of a car that hasn't been released yet. You must be clairvoyant.

Every time you post, I get the impression that you are some 14 year old who pores over AMG brochures and then runs online and posts about how the S550 has a "weak" chassis, but the S65 has a "great" chassis. I also like how you think the S65/C65 handles better than a 911 turbo.

You are so delusional its really quite mindblowing.

I finally got a chance to test drive the new 750iL yesterday and was quite impressed with the power. I really like the new location and design of the gear shifter.
The dash is very stream-lined and the buttons and displays are placed just right. This particular one had everything on it except adaptive cruise control and was at $106K. The side cameras were strange but I'm sure I could get used to this.
Overall, BMW has hit a home run like MB did with the W221.

But what do you think about the looks?

I pretty much like it except I'm not sure I like the grille. It looks like the nostrils of an angry bull. Other than that it looks a whole lot like the Lexus LS.
The new 7 series is ten times better looking than the outgoing model, so if I were a BMW follower, and had one of the old copies, I'd be looking to trade up to this new one in a heartbeat.
All in all, the Mercedes is still the winner for me even after being on the market for 3 years.

Read it

Not sure why I haven't read this thread until now but a couple observations:

For every post by WSH there seems to be a follow up by Oliverk

As far as the article obviously agree.
Agree with Trumpet on performance and interior.
Agree with Austin questioning "what about the looks?"

The looks are growing on me. First time I saw I didn't like the front at all. Now it doesn't really bother me. The side is a huge improvement as is the rear. It just doesn't look as good as the S. Its kinda LS and 7 mashed together. I liked the performance also.

Two things missing for me. Didn't get the "wow look at that" feeling and didn't get the wow "this car feels incredible" feeling.
Both come standard with the S600.

First off, the 750 they used didn't have the sport package... so it was without Active Roll Stabilization and Integral Active Steering. A little unfair to compare an S550 with ABC to that!

While I like the exterior of the W221 better (although I have become fond of the 7's looks), the interior of the 7 is dramatically better IMO. It may just be my age. It feels younger, more comfortable and more intimate. The leather and matte wood looks dramatically better than the leather and wood in the S550. (I'm appalled by the low quality of the leather in the S550. - The S600 on the other hand is sublime)

I'm hopeful I'll be back to an S in 2013 with the new model. Just have to wait and see...

Great read, thanks for the link. My sister drives a A8, brother in law drives a 750Li and they are both great automobiles. I'll just stay the best car they have ever ridden in, the S550.

The seats are not comfortable at all (front or back), kinda stiff. I sold my A8 in Feb. Wanted to buy a 750LI but didn't like the seats and the tail (It totally looks like Lexus LS especially in white color). Ended up getting an S65 afterall.
