Transmission "shudder" when stopping.

2007 4-Matic, 117*** off the line. It has 56,000 miles and been on the ground for 3.5 years. Just got off lease. When slowing to a stop and just before complete stop, there is a strong, noticeable "shudder". It quits when car is totally stopped. To separate from brakes or similar, I put trans. in neutral at about 15 mph and applied steady brakes to come to a normal halt. There was no shudder as it came to a final halt. This isn't right. Am seeing dealer next week. Any ideas? Transfer case (omg, I hope not)? Axle(s)? Motor mounts? Thanks for any and all input.

Sounds like transmission problems. I hope you have an extended warranty on the car.

It's got 57K miles, it should have have a transmission fluid change at 40K miles. Did it? If not, get one.

Same problem

I had this exact problem on an 07 4matic. The dealer at first suspected motor mounts, etc. but the problem persisted. Some time later I had trouble with the engine falling out of gear while driving and progressively losing power. I had to pull over and turn the car off and restart and all would be good for a few days/weeks until it happened again.

Finally the dealer replaced some "electronic valve" and both problems went away. I don't think it was an expensive fix but I was still under warranty.

Timely reply! I visited the M-B shop this morning. Willing to help, but no real distinct answer. Replace motor mounts--$800. Or, change fluid in transmission AND transaxle--$700. Probably should do both. And neither may be a fix. Fluid change first, then he'll drive the car in figure 8's and circles and it should be okay. 100k car and it needs to be driven in circles seems kind of strange.

Please, please, can you retrieve the work order or some how find out what "valve" or whatever was replaced? I will surely pay you or reward you in some way for helping. My car was the 117,123 off the line. Close to yours? If you would find private messaging easier, please do it. I am really desparate. Thanks so much.

Looking

Em Bee - Just checked in and saw your post. I'll look for the work order but likely won't have it. I don't have the car anymore. I'll check with my service advisor. They likely keep the records.

Nutso coincidence. It appears concurrent to you replying, I was sending a private message to you, asking for help. Know you're busy, but any direction will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

this is not an uncommon problem, it is in the transmission. it may be software, a ehcu, or possibly mechanical wear. have the dealer check it, they should be able to diagnose it and fix it with out too much trouble.

Transmission "shudder" when coming to a stop.

I appreciate the advice. The dealer said it could be the transmission (duh) or motor mounts. Flush the transmission/trans axle and drive it in hard "figure eight" turns for a while and it should be ok. Estimate--$700. No guarantee of a fix. Replace engine mounts. Estimate--$1000. No guarantee of a fix. That's serious dough to me for guesses. I am really frustrated, but thanks, again, for replying.

Mine had the same problem. Actually the car even stalled on occasion. They fixed the "valve body" and everything is cured.

Fixed under warranty? Any idea of cost? Mine has 57 k miles, so it's my nickel. Trying to get a cost idea. Thanks.

It was under warranty. Fairly common problem for 7G auto. Had similar problem on my R350 which was fixed under warranty, too.

software update. Mine did this if I left off the gas abrupdtly and then applied the brake. If I let of the gas gradually and then applied brake I got nothing. Took it in, reflashed it and BAM, good as new.

Transmission "shudder" when coming to a stop.

Found my answer to two irritants. Vibration through steering wheel at idle and low speeds and "shudder" or vibration at moment of stopping.

Motor mounts replacement cured both ills.

I'm out of warranty. There was a service advisory, which i mentioned to the mb tech, but he ignored. Change transmission and trans axle fluid he said, to fix things. Took to my indie, with service advisory in hand. He said worth the try. Voila'! The old mounts were a full inch + lower/compressed, compared to the new ones. He let everything hang, put on mounts, reconnected and it's like it should be. Shouldn't have to be doing this at under 55,000 miles, but it is what it is.

I owe saving many, many dollars and pinpointing a logical potential solution to this board. The SA listing is phenominal help. The collegial willingness of poster to care and offer thoughts, opinions and experiences was much appreciated. Thanks all!
