Updating Telematic of 2007 s550?
I would like to have my 2007 s550 to have the latest Navigation views like 3D, Bird's eye view, DVD viewing etc and also Traffic updates.
Not sure if my local dealer in Dallas, TX can update those for me and how? cost??? Not sure of list of things I need to do here. Not sure if the dealer can update the COMMAND NAV and all the related parts for this older model.
I do not know much about these technologies so I appreciate your answers with clear details so I can go to local dealer tomorrow.
Appreciate your help.
WARNING-- DO NOT try to get an inexperienced dealer to perform this update!!
The cost for the telematics update can vary from free to a couple of hundred dollars depending on the dealer. The telemataics update can take from a couple of hours to a full day (depending on how much of the software on your vehicle is obsolete), it is all done automatically be a special computer.
In addition to the update, you will need one of the more recent navigation DVD updates which you can install yourself.
Keep in mind that even after they perform the upgrade you still need to update your maps dvd to get traffic. Look my previous posts for guidance on how to get traffic. You can rent the dvd from some members here.
1. Ask your MB dealer to update the firmware in the Comand Unit to the latest one. That was done using their computer and took about 2 hours to upload to the car. Not sure exactly what info is uploaded during this process. Anyway, Be awaree of things not working afterwards like my AC blows warm air ? A coding issue in the front SAM etc. hopefully youll be ok.
2. Then Insert latest uptodate NAvigation Disc eg 2012, usually by NAVTEQ, eg.

I bought that one and When you insert that into you DVD multichanger, just follow the prompts and it takes around 40 mins to upload, ejects the dvd automatically, resets itself and thats it. Just find the birds eye view as above and scroll the menus to find the other new Comand additions.

I am now looking to do the Telematic update on my 2007 S550 4 Matic up here in Canada. I did update my map before using the Map CD purchased form the dealer, but it does not require me to keep the CD in the in the system and I come to understand it's only for 2007 to 2009 version of S class that use that disk.
My very question is once the command system is updated through the telematic update what map update disk do I use? I mean the parts department people at the dealer will ask for the model of the year which is 2007 but yet the command system has been updated so how do I ask for the the map disk that will work with the new command system ? Tell them the disk for later model year?
Thank you all so very much for your input in advance.

...after they load the update cd for comand, make sure service agent / tech specifically confirm:
AC is working correctly
Reversing camera operates properly after update.
If not they need to make sure they update front SAM, it needs recoding
(SAM = Signal Acquisition and Activation Module (110 in diagram) controls various functions. )
Improvements = availability of:
sat nav, bird's eye view
constant ETA display option
traffic TMC issues on screen
video turned on for NA mkt
A221 827 sat nav update discs are "lime green", if a European model they don't any form of map update to cope with the update it all works fine (dealers are just lying cheating scum) .. if you want the latest roads, an updates disc is a good idea (and possibly essential for NA mkt if older than 2008)

I just got my 2006 UK spec car updated today and AC not working afterwards.
What happens is bird's eye view software was for later cars which have a different ac compressor. When an older spec car is updated with the later software, the comand unit no longer knows how to switch on the earlier style ac compressor (hence no cooling) all they have to do is recode to say its got the older style compressor...
about 10 mins work, then ac works normally as it was before the update.
Waited for the dealer shop foreman for 3 days to start the firmware update on the command system. (a very busy guy with 16 years of experience)
My local Mercedes Benz dealer has never done this before, but with everyone's input here I was able to convince them to do the update on my car.
Took the tech 3 hours in total, 2 hr for the firmware update and 1 hr for the system check through include making sure AC work fine after update.
Attached are a few picture of my screen, finally there is a Video tab and Bird's eye view of Navigation system.
Total cost $403. Canadian includes (13% HST taxe)

Thank you everyone on the forum here, giving so much information so I can actually have this done right the first time.

can I buy the DVD from eBay and install it with out create issue to AC ? or I have to take it to the dealer for any update ? I am trying to save the money in somehow .
Thanks
Telematics update: This updates COMAND software for birds eye view, DVD video, etc.
Navigation update: Separate DVD to update the maps.
To be honest, the Telematics update for you car should take an hour. I did mine myself. Basically fire up DAS, tell it to update, insert the proper CD when prompted and off it goes. This is beyond the range of most DIY types as it actually requires the STAR diag type stuff. But, it is so damn simple no dealer worth their salt should give you a blank stare or quote you an obscene amount of time to do it. It is a very worthwhile upgrade.
For those curious on how simple this is for the dealer to complete...
Under main list of components of the car, pick Communications.
Then pick COMAND.
Select adaptations.
Select upgrade.
It will tell you the exact CD#required and tell you to toss it in the CD player/changer. Then you hit upgrade. Done. It isn't rocket science.
As for navigation DVD, that is a DIY job. Just insert the DVD and it will prompt to update. Just make sure battery is under continual charge or keep car running during process. It think it took around an hour for this step.
As for the AC, in the coding is a setting for the AC clutch mechanism. It just needs to be toggled to get the AC working if it doesn't. Again, 2 minutes of time.
