STAR/DAS/Xentry is not a panacea. Yeah, it's great and all. For around $450 you get a Chinese knock-off and it will work with some effort.
You will spend literally 40 hours learning about keygens, licensing, black lists, laptops, COM port settings, SDFlash folders, offline programming, etc. to become proficient.
Once you get to that point, software is great. You'll run across the random German screen but it is damn easy to use.
With that said, you may be able to pull off an offline adaptive flash for the tranny if yours is a 7 speed. There were updates for that. There is no effing way I would attempt it. Start swapping CANBUS parts? That's a SCN thing that needs to communicate with the mothership.
Things you can't do:
Set tuner parameters for engine
Set MPH limiter to unlimited
Pick winning lotto numbers
What it will do is tell you the heating element is shot in your right mirror.
I really do wish the best of luck and hope it all turns out ok. I was your age once, and learning the sunk cost fallacy is often brutal.
For a couple hundred bucks for a scan you are helping the shop pay for the equipment. Their cost for the "official tools" are around 30K. Think of it like an MRI machine at the hospital. They gotta pay for it somehow. Life isn't a charity.

How do I know if the Shop has a knock off Star module? Are there any tell tale signs?
Where do I go to take the speed limiter off? On Youtube I saw that a stock S600 can do 197mph.

As for top speed, 197 is trivial son. Always pisses me off Distronic cuts off at 122.

MBS55, so now that we realize from Mike that the subframe is steel and not aluminum, when are you taking the car to Vlad (a.k.a. Nick) to look it over? That's about the only big hurdle you have left to get this car on the road, right?

Yeah there are several signs. When the shirtless mechanic in a greasy pair of overalls comes out holding a crescent wrench asking you "how much money you got?" is a good sign he may not be an authorized MB mechanic.

It also had developer mode where I can change coding on the vehicle, including the speed limiter.
As far as I'm concerned, in terms of home DIY, it is a panacea for owners of complex mb products

The question is do you want it almost perfect ($$$$) or like compaddict is implying, fixed by a shop like Maaco ($$) and looking passable to start driving it?

I'd LOVE to see this!! Please post a video of a guy trying to do PDR on your car if or when you ever get to that point. The paint likely already has spider cracks all over it from the creases (or it will once the frame is pulled), so PDR should be an interesting miracle to make it look good.

Right quarter possibly, after the pull. I don't think the left is even borderline. The damage runs right through a crease. But if they can PDR the right, some labor and paint on the left won't be too expensive.

nonsense. There are members that sell complete packages that you don't need to know anything about computers for. I bought my system previously used for $400 and it works right out of the box.
