Funny, a friend of mine was just telling me about his new SL55 AMG. I told him he should join the forums, but I put a disclaimer out to him that there are a lot of grumpy old men on here with egos or just grumpy as the approach on many is off balance to say the least compared to other forums and I just randomly came across your lovely peaceful post Dave. At least I can say you stay true to type. He and I both thought this post by Dave was funny as hell.

Here's the risk he's taking. If he causes an accident without property damage liability insurance, the other drivers insurance will pay for damage to his own car. Then they'll send a bill to Benz55. If Benz55 doesn't pay, the insurer can have the state revoke his drivers license until he does pay.
If he injures someone but doesn't have bodily injury liability coverage, their own uninsured motorist coverage will pay for their injuries, and bill Benz55, or take his license if he can't pay.
Next, Benz55 will have failed his state's financial responsibility requirement which says that if you go without insurance you must self insure, meaning have cash on hand to pay damages he caused. As a result, he can no longer buy regular car insurance. He has to buy insanely expensive SR22 coverage instead.
Usually what happens is the uninsured guy doesn't pay the other carriers back. They take his license. He keeps driving. He gets pulled over. He gets arrested for driving without a license. They suspend his license for a year. He gets caught again on a suspended license. He goes to jail for a couple of months and they suspend him for three years, etc etc etc.
So yeah, this thread could get really interesting.

But driving without insurance would show that all his protestations of being responsible are utter BS.

Daves a good robin, a buzz aldren, a buzz light year if you will. That is if those guys had Type A personalities. Mike is a batman, an arnold Armstrong or a woody*snicker, with a type B personality. A unique mash up of role reversals!

The real point of my post was up to that point I was willing to give the OP the benefit of the doubt given even if the car was a total loss in the grand scheme of things $15k is not that big of a deal and more importantly bounded.

Ya, driving without insurance is very irresponsible. I have a friend who just passed his ten year anniversary for driving without insurance. Never had an issue. And he used to drive real crazy like!

My guess is that we're being kept in the dark on the insurance issue. Most auto liability policies give the policyholder a grace period (usually 30 days) within which to cover a newly purchased vehicle. The insurance will cover that new vehicle even if they were not formally advised of the purchase. The real risk comes if/when you pass the 30 day mark and still have not purchased insurance for the newly purchased vehicle.
This thread isn't really a technical thread. It is an automotive soap opera.
It should be titled "That's the way the Mercedes Benz."

A lesson to all: choose your friends wisely. Otherwise you may just end up with a bunch of wrapped up 1 dollar bills strewn all over your body and then try to convince everybody you can buy a totaled car and make it all look and run perfectly for under $1k with a rubber mallet and a used bumper cover. I'm sure those friends still think you can do it for under $1k.

I imagine that this is very similar to the first conversation Benzs55 had with his future wife.

I would think that you would be unable to register the car without proof of insurance. In NC, the state will get pretty nasty with you if to try to pull a foolish stunt like driving without insurance.
In Georgia, they will swear out a warrant if you drop coverage on a vehicle and can't prove you either moved out of state or otherwise disposed of the vehicle.

The laws are lax in enforcement but there are laws on the books around having insurance on your cars. Don't kid yourself that not having insurance is OK, if you are pulled over they will ask for POI. No body thinks they are going to have an accident until they do, you make enough money to buy it, just do it if you are not covered. If you do have an accident and another drivers insurance has to cover your damage, the insurance company will hound you like a dog and if you have anything they will get it including your wages.

Isn't it that it would cost alot for him to have insurance since he has never been covered?

Best pullovers were when he rolls down the window and the Occifer gets hit with billowing pot smoke.
Yes, my Wifes Acura is fully insured.

Your friend is either a. an idiot with no assets or job so he does not care about liability, or b. a galactic moron, if he has a job or any assets as he is playing with fire by driving around high with no insurance. If he hit me or my kids while high and uninsured I would make it a personal mission using considerable resources to make his life a living hell. Why would anyone take such a risk to save a few bucks. It's all fun and games until he hits somebody and they find pot in his system, believe me, the cops will care at that point, so will the judge.
