Just Bought a S550
I just bought a 2007 S550 with 75K miles on it. The car is in good condition but one of the problems I am having is that I cannot turn off the headlights at night when I put the headlight knob to 0. Also I notice that the head light knob lights are not illuminated. Also just some side comments the ride is really nice but the car feels super heavy. Any other tips or things I should check on the car?

Not sure about the light issue, but when I bought my S600, I thought it was "heavy" or sluggish. The S550 may be different, but my car starts off in 2nd gear so it's smoother, which makes it feel sluggish. If you put it in Sport or "S" it starts off in 1st gear. I drive in S usually

First off, Congrats on your new ride. I just myself purchased an 07 S550 4 weeks ago and a absolutely love it.
What was your previous vehicle? I came from a W211 E320 and compared to that, the S is VERY heavy. Mine however does not feel heavy, as it has plenty of power for my taste with the V8, not to feel sluggish.
Yes, the car is much quicker in Sport mode compared to Comfort mode. But even in Comfort mode the car does not appear sluggish to me.
Why would you want to turn your headlights of at night??? Not sure what you are trying to accomplish here.
You may want to check within the command system, maybe you have it set for power to the headlights at all times, so it will not turn the lights off with the switch.
In regards to the switch not illuminating, I would assume you may have a bad bilulb behind it.
Hope this helps a bit.

Most likely the reason why the headlights remain on is the daylight running light feature is enabled on your vehicle. This causes the lights to be on whenever the engine is running. They CAN be turned off via the steering wheel buttons, see your owner manual. If you do not have the manual, you can download it for free from www.mbusa.com. If your vehicle was originally sold in Canada, you can't turn them off without the use of a Mercedes DAS diagnostic computer.

Congrats on your new (to you) ride. These are very decked out cars.
My wife thought that it felt heavy at first, but later realized it was just the Airmatic suspension softening things up.
I took mine for a ride through the mountains shortly after I bought it and it handled brilliantly.
It actually weighs less than my buddies 2014 Taurus SHO by a couple of hundred pounds.
But that Taurus is a little quicker.
What trim level is it? 4Matic, Base, Sport (AMG), etc.
Is it a Designo, does it have the Panoramic roof?
Enjoy it and most importantly know that you can get a lot of good tips here.

So it is pretty much the base model. I know some of you guys are not going to believe this but I have been driving a camry for the past 7-8 years. This is my first luxury car. It is not the 4matic model but a base model S class. It does not have the panoramic roof. So when I bought it I really did not look at the features but bought it because it was in good condition and had low miles for its year. One thing I am shocked about is that it has no back up camera or even sensors in the back. It is a big car so will have to get used to that.
I will try the headlight thing to see if it works.

I'm curious, does yours have the ability to raise the vehicle? I believe it's a function of the Airmatic suspension. Does it have the rear windshield curtain?

Yeah I have the rear windshield curtain and it does have the ability to raise and lower the car. It even has soft closing doors which is odd. I would appreciate the sensors and camera more because of length of the car.

Check the consumer battery and the battery under the hood, if original, you want to replace them. Post a picture so we can get a look at your bumper and a VIN so that someone can pull a data card for you.

Regardless if bare bones or not, compared to your Camry, you must feel like a hero now.
If you got a great deal and the car is clean, who cares if there are a few "extras" missing.
ENJOY YOUR NEW TO YOU CAR!!!!!!

Yeah there is no comparison between the camry and this. I am still figuring things out. I looked at the battery under the hood and it is the mercedes brand which makes me think it is still the original battery. The only features I would have liked are some sensors in the back. I cant complain though.

The actual headlight control "panel" is not illuminated. That's correct. Instead, the ambient light "strip" in the dash above it lights it up. If the knob is acting goofy, just go on eBay and buy a new one. They're pretty cheap and the install looks easy enough

Lights
The setting for the Automatic lights is in the instrument cluster under vehicle or something like that. It’s in my second page. Click “daytime running lights” and check them off. The switch in mine is also not illuminated and can be annoying at night when turning fog lights on and off. I looked at your vin and it appears that you do indeed have the base model without any premium package options (ie no vented seats or parking sensors.) Don’t feel too bad about the backup camera though. My 2007 has Premium 2 package (includes P1 and a few more extras like keyless go and parking sensors) and the AMG Sport package but doesn’t have a backup camera. There is a way to retrofit one but it’s quite pricey (like $500+). I think it’s through a mid city engineering module.

I have just pickled up a 2008 S550 4Matic and am still learning the ropes. It is a wonderful car. AMAZING. Going to spend some time at a dealership (free 90 minutes) with a guy who is going to review every single detail of the car. Good luck with your Benz. This is my second and my last one was an E430 RWD. GREAT car.
