Mercedes W221 S350 2007 - Replacing corrugated nylon lines inside Fuel Tank

Hi every one, hope all are well

This regarding my car no start issue.

It was a cracked fuel line inside the fuel tank.
The corrugated nylon fuel line coming from the fuel pump to the sending / filter unit.

The line coming from the right part of the fuel tank where the pump is under the back seat going inside the tank to the left part of the fuel tank "to the filter".
The crack place is described in the attached photo.

I was shocked and still do not believe this:

I must replace the complete fuel tank.
I cannot replace the cracked nylon fuel line.
I could not find any information about these three nylon lines going to the filter / sending unit. "Photo attached".
Not in Mercedes agent.
Not in eBay.
Not available in the web.
No diagram about it.
No YouTube video about it.
No any information.

Please I need urgent help.

Can I replace this fuel line??
Please help.

I would use gasoline resistant epoxy if the crack is not too big.

Check with mirror where this line going. If it’s going from filter to pump then you can replace the broken line relatively easy.

Thanks for your reply.
This is really make me happy, because I think it is hose coming from the pump.
I'll check these after emptying the fuel tank.

You have to be creative on this one. You can purchase fuel line hose in your autoparts store or purchase MB fuel pump like this one: 2114706094 with hose attached and reuse only the hose.
Take the broken hose out first so you know the length and diameter so you can find hose with same length and diameter.

Remove, measure length and diameter, then check:

I have to assume it goes from the pump to some other bulkhead fitting inside the tank, where some other fuel line attaches to the outside. All I can suggest would be...
  1. See if you can find the part or even a complete fuel tank from a salvage dealer with a scrapped S-class.
  2. Pull the entire hose out and see if you can find a replacement the same diameter and the same or greater length from Summit Racing, McMaster-Carr, etc.
  3. See if you can find some other type of fuel line that you could replace the entire line with. Just becuase Mercedes-Benz used corrugated poly line doesn't mean you have to, if you can find something that the connectors can be fitted to.
  4. If you can't find a replacement, you pretty much have nothing to lose by letting it dry thoroughly and trying some self-fusing silicone tape on it.

As shown in this photo, there is one line coming from fuel pump to the fuel filter (the one i have take out side).
this broken line is coming from fuel filter and assume going to the engine.
I'm thinking to cut this line and attached a small line with suitable fitting to attach it to the old line and then connect it to the fitting to the fuel filter, as illustrated in the photo.

At this point you have nothing to lose, right? Either it works and you can drive your car, or it doesn't and you're not any worse off than you are now.

hi, I saw your reply, I’d like to ask you a few questions and you can tell me what you recommend, either a quick fix or if you do actually have those fuel line replacements and know which both ends they connect to is be glad to have a permanent fix.

thank you.

I know this is a year old but the solution to this problem is straight forward. The cracked line can be repaired or replaced. I had to replace the line in my 2007 E350 from the tank, pressure line to the filter. The old line would not come out so I made an entire new line out of new 3/8" fuel line. It is a a nylon line from Dorman, comes in a 10' length for under $20. You cut the fittings out of your old hose to reuse the exact factory fitting in the new hose. You can soak the end of the new tube in very hot water for 30 seconds and then while very hot slip the new hose onto the old fitting. Have a small hammer, perferrably a plastic hammer head or rubber and hold the hose firm while you tap the fitting into the new hose. It takes determination and speed but if you mess up you have extra hose to use for the second try. Tapping quickly without much power in the tap does the job, if you hit it hard the hose will split, tap fast and it slips right in, you can see the barbs slowly inching into the hose as you tap so you know when you are done, no clamps are necessary. The Dorman hose when new tries to hold its coiled shape. Soak it in very hot water then shape it to any shape you need, hold it in the new shape as it cools and you are good to go. In my case I slipped an old spark plug wire inside the hose so it did not allow the new hose to kink or collapse anywhere when I shaped it. This helped as I needed a pretty sharp 90* elbow at one end for this to work and it did. I have a brand new fuel line installed and working. Took me a few hours learning but it fixed my issue for very little money. The old hose can be lightly cut with a sharp razor blade then peel it off the old fitting, don't got to deep or you can cut the plastic fitting under the hose. So, can this be done yes. On my tank the old hose could not be removed, it was tied somewhere in the tank that I could not reach so I left the old hose in there and routed in my new hose. Had to be careful that the new hose location did not hit or interfere with the fuel level gauges inside the tank, mine had two I had to avoid. Nylon fuel line is used by most OEM manufacturers today inside tanks and outside tanks so this is a permanent fix for you. Rubber fuel lines fall apart when installed inside a tank so don't try to use them. Gates and Dayco do make a rubberized fuel line for inside a fuel tank but it is really expensive, about $15 per inch, my hose was 30" so that was not a good option. Google Nylon Fuel line fittings and installation tips you will learn a lot.
No matter what you do remember you are working over a bomb when a tank of gas is under you and open. Do not use a heat gun or any tool that can provide a spark or you might not survive to tell your story.

PS: Thanks for posting your pictures showing your cracked line, I was trying to remember the proper mounting locations for the filter lines and your post helped me out.

Thank you very much for the reply. I had the mechanic take care of it, he got lines out of an old tank from another car, apparently he had the tanked emptied (not completely) and had to reach all the way into the tank and fit the parts mostly without seeing anything just by feel. The car has issues, I rarely ever use it, it might be an old coil problem or a fuel problem wether lines or pump. Mercedes here charges $12,000 for a tank replacement since the S class came out in 2007, there is no repair for it offered by Mercedes.

Your reply and time are most appreciated, I’m sure many will come across and find it very helpful. Thank you.

I just installed a new S550 pump in my car today, I used the :

Delphi Fuel Pump CFE0727 I needed it quick and ordered it from AUTOZONE, $315 and they had it same day. If I wanted to wait I could have had it for about $225. If you suspect a fuel supply issue just connect a fuel pressure gauge with a long hose so you can locate the gauge near your windshield so you can see it while starting and driving. The pressure gauge will show exactly what your pump is doing and if that is the problem. A 10 minute test can eliminate the unknowns as far as your fuel supply. They are good cars, it deserves to be reliable for you. Good Luck.
