BOTUS:

There are many CFF versions in the 221 SAM-H timeline:

4422400 31.10.2007
4422600 20.12.2007
4423300 6.6.2008
9021400 16.01.2009
9021401 6.1.2009
9023903 1.6.2012
9024003 4.6.21012
9024903 03.04.2013

I don't know if they are all SW updates but, as mentioned, seems MB was scrambling for something with the Rear SAM!!! Also, as mentioned, I wonder what happens if I tell DAS to update w/o "feeding" it a new CFF:

Frankly, I don't know enough about Xentry/DAS to know what the "REMEDY: Perform initial startup" will do??? I can only assume it will keep 4421300, since I deleted 4423300 from my DAS software F:\ drive so it won't have a CFF to update to. I can manipulate DAS to use any SW version I want but, which one??? And, since it can't be reversed, why do it?

Thanks for the tip on the seat module. I'll take a look at WIS...

Regards.... Mark

aside from improved diagnosis capability that might one day be helpful (and maybe bugs we don't know of, see or feel), only a few updates made noticeable changes

Engine not sure - (but probably good idea)
Gearbox, delayed a down change as you come to a rest after customer complaint it was **** - (self explanatory)

Telematics ring with loads of bug fixes, traffic and bird's eye - (all should do)
Door modules where the windows carry on working - (all should do)

The ZAN central screen, where it seems a bit better with improved blacks and less manky grey (I think it seems better, no bugs noticed by me)
The Highline TPMS where I believe it updates the pressure info more regularly (probably just designed to wear sensor batteries so they can sell more, and it still doesn't allow PSI selection like the user manual say the car had at birth)

The best user noticeable update, is the one they don't give us !!! Where the Amp/Tuner changes all comand menu screens to an enhanced menu colour scheme the facelift car's got - is very subtle but when you go backwards its like u r in an unfinished prototype

ooh, just thought..... after one software update during 2019 my car magically got hill hold assist
I'll have to check, its actually irritating with no option to turn off, so if going back to the older R SAM software is what now takes away this behaviour I'll let you know....

Interesting, I never knew the 221 had such a feature.... But, here it is in the OM:

I live on the water (Sea). And, have to have a "certificate" of elevation above sea level and, oddly, know my garage is 7 feet above it! That means my driveway slopes at maybe 10%.... Otherwise, in my coastal area, there are no 5% slopes.

I have always noticed the car won't move backwards or forwards when I stop in my driveway w/o pressing the accelerator when waiting for the garage door to open . As you said irritating... I never knew why before but sensed it was not normal and just got used to it!

Having driven probably 98% of my lifetime miles with manual trannies, I know well how to "hill hold". Even with autos-- keeping it at stall speed to prevent backward movement... As you said, irritating to learn new driving habits.

(One note, I changed my driving habit of ready-to-race at stoplights after my wife got rear-ended in our 635SCi--- other drivers will hit you from behind if you are waiting with the clutch disengaged and no brake light illuminated at a stoplight-- my former habit. I now always keep an eye in the rearview and frantically flash the brake lights, if necessary!!! I assume, the MB "hill hold" keeps brake lights on...)

Speaking of brake lights-- I know we Were not, but... Anyone know how to set brake lights to flash on hard braking? I think I saw it in DAS, but can't remember where or if it was in Developer Mode or DAS Sim? Not to go to "War Stories" but, I recently had to stop for some idiot driving 1/2 the speed limit and there was another idiot behind me who probably had no comprehension of how fast an S-Class can stop (same as an RX-8, IIRC!!). No incident but, as anyone on this forum knows, most people issued a "driver's" license still have no idea how to "drive". I've been thinking flashing brake lights-- I think legal in the USA-- would be a good feature to "turn on"...

mine says it has flashing brake lights... I believe an option
K11 ADAPTIVE STOP LIGHT FLASHING

One of the SAM updates says it SCNs it to ON after updating

BOTUS, my guess is, your hill hold was set off and new programming turned it back on or, dealer did it...

And thanks. Your post jogged my memory of where I saw the flashing brake thing. It's in the built code:

Guessing, it is in ABR and can be set with "Read Coding" in DAS. I'll check and see. I have no idea if it is set to "on" in the USA... How could you tell? The same probably goes for "Hill Hold". Maybe it can be turned "off" and that is what was happening with yours.

And, lastly, another WAG. Maybe you can change the software changes you don't like with "Read Coding"? Does your diagnostic equipment do that? I'm assuming that requires a multiplexer and all the attendant BS to run full DAS/Xentry... In six years, I've barely scratched the surface on what Can be done...

If you complete this test when connected to the COU in diagnostics you can see this action is registered by the vehicle in volume control signals. Whether its broken with the same SCN software update that kills the Source mute for voice overlay, I'm not sure. I suspect it was a feature considered during the vehicle's development and then forgotten as they moved to a more sophisticated idea (with signals from the ABS, OCP, SAM-H and TTU). And remains part baked in buggy software from build. However with Mercedes still believing this feature is there and working it could be why a SCN instigated Rear SAM update they force, breaks all the early cars they put it on. As it's actually an update for facelift NTG3.5 vehicles they believe is compatible with early cars but definitely isn't.
Just found out why above doesn't get much support / response.... It does EXACTLY as above in the quote, if running R SAM software 22149024903

Today tried two other COU comand knobs (still no Nav mute). But now I'm running R SAM software 2214703300 and testing the bit in quotes above, it now has different haptic feedback limiting any movement to the left and no restriction turning to the right. And its always on Max left, it brings no change when turning to the right with unlimited movement

1) older hardware, same software mine had originally
2) second revision, later software
3) later hardware, later software

all 3 COU's operate the same (as in differently when using either early or later R SAM software revision - so the fact later R SAM software brings back a feature technical docs felt they'd built the car with, but was never on mine since I had it in 2014 (when Nav mute it worked correctly till updates in 2019) it seems to suggest they had / have no idea what they were / are doing, and had go in a muddle

re hill hold - yep, I think you are right

Flashing brake light - drive like a maniac at night get the ABS to cut in and look in the rear view mirror if u r brave enough.... alternately go for a drive with a mate following in another vehicle, it will be on most of the time you brake reasonably late. I had a 1999 Omega (very similar to chevy lumina / holden commadore) mate followed me and let me know it was on most of the time.... opps, never realised it had it, or that relatively "normal driving" activated it.... not what you need with plod behind you !

My snap on kit can do some coding, but not enough (wont do C to F or KPH to MPH I've been nagging they ought to do it for the money. FYI you can turn on Tank Level to get another option on the cluster... (snap on can't do this either - nor find 7 modules my cheap Autel kit supports !!!) its kind of handy. For no good reason rather than the range calling out x miles to go all the way to fumes....because the tank is such a poor design, they switch to the red pump symbol and with 50 mile range left you no longer know if its fumes or 2 gallons you have left to work with which is REALLY STUPID !!! .... the tank level whilst a little erratic gives the info you need. Another menu is supposed to turn off the red pump symbol but the car doesn't actually do as its told.... (get translate ready or u may be in a muddle)

might have got myself in a pickle going backwards on the R SAM.....

I now have a PSE pump and seat fault.... these weren't there the day before.... I wasn't too fused, as I still needed to go back and get the R SAM SCN'd back to completely suit my car. But now I think the loss of diagnostics capability on the older software might have got me stuck (note the replacement R SAM is actually newer hardware and running the software Merc sell it with, which is an older version of software than I've has in the car for the last 2 years) .

One other update I completely forgot we ever did was the PSE pump which went 6 years forward to 11.05 using SW 0009024704 … and now its claiming its not running. one fuse for a PSE pump is on the R SAM, yesterday I went back to the knowledgeable garage I found to ask then to SCN the R SAM and they said " there is no SCN for the R SAM its all manual configuration and its set up correctly (strange as the older hardware was SCN'd 3 times ????????)

A point I didn't share when swapping it over the other day, I found the driver of my intermittent R SAM N10/2kn relay fault…. Until you pull it right out and take half a million wires off you can't see what's happening.... the animal that messed up fitting it a year back bent a pin and couldn't clip the R SAM to the SRB properly.... but obviously he could code all / most options - but then couldn't get it to function correctly.

At the time when they handed it over, I drove off with No cruise and No parking sensors.... (I went straight back) - that's when he said I think its broken I couldn't talk to half of it.... I said doh, why didn't you mention that and put the old one back! Anyway he had clearly forced the original R SAM further in when swapping back (bending the pin flat enough that this time it could mostly function correctly). As can now be seen when pulling it apart, I can see he was still unable to lock one end in. The left pic shows the end at the top of the Picture is 5mm from being clipped in properly.

Anyway back to yesterday - he said no SCN and its fully coded. The only way I believe it can't be SCN'd is that its either a software iteration for replacement and they enabled manual config... (he said its all tick boxes) and or its not been online coded to a car so the coding is currently user choice as germany hasn't put its fingers in the pie???

But now I'm thinking the car is confused, saying the PSE pump is off line due to leak and overheating.... but it isn't, its working, you can hear it do its usual thing and the massage and side cushions are working.... but the seat base does feel like it did when it had a leak 6 months back and the pump went off line. I'm getting 1 x PSE and 2 x MKL LH and RH faults. So now I'm wondering if the much later PSE software with later diagnostics goes in tandem with the later R SAM software ???

We flashed the OCP again, need to check if its the same (yet to do) but still No Nav mute...

And then for the Distronic Plus behaviour. It is different...
in town you can feel it over do the throttle (so they did make it less bad in the 2010 release in traffic) but then when nothing in front of you that later software under does it. (which is what I said in previous posts).
They clearly didn't think how to write software correctly... the fix would be rather basic

below 30 mph - object within 20 yards not moving away from you accelerate gently as per later software
no object within 20 yards and above 50 mph or on an incline accelerate as per original software

I suspect the MPG will be better on the older software.... I noticed at one point with set speed well below current speed and nothing in front it didn't brake heavily to reduce speed.... (which it does on later software)
it was better braking, but it did get it wrong going towards lots of stopped traffic on one occasion....

But in general the braking is less on off, it builds up the braking rather than not bothering then trying to play catch up and struggling to stop. I was wondering if it can go through the calibration phase if lots of things change? On the way back (12 mile each way trip) the distance it looked up the road was much further than it was on the later software and much more than the trip on the way there.... (not sure how / why).

It since occured to me the later software was for later placement at the bottom of the grille - with potentially later hardware??

Thursday the good garage said no SCN available and its fully coded.

I got it all sorted and without any diagnostic faults for the first time in 14 months (...this good garage had missed a point with the R SAM coding).

Checking on my Snap On tool today.... I still had the same fault in the R SAM re a PSE pump error. So I went looking at the seat modules and Snap On had a moment, said can't work out what module its got for the seat and threw a warning about "play at own risk". I thought that's odd not seen that before.

Went back to manual coding choices to the Rear SAM, and found there's one for the PSE pump and it said "Present", so I went to look at what choices there is to play and first thing is

M25/1 (lumbar pump)
note: If special equipment Multicontour backrests' is installed, the coding must be set to "Not present"

So I coded to off and the R SAM is now happy, went back to the seat modules and now it knows which seat modules are fitted.... so its only taken 14 months to clear faults after the idiots that caused damage when they couldn't fit a R SAM (where we've been stuck trying to fix the driver of a broken Nav Mute feature)

Hill hold assist is working on the either R SAM. So I guess the first owner had is turned off...
The OCP module refresh / R SAM PSE issue resolution, has allowed the Sun roof anti trap set up to complete
And going backward in R SAM software give Older Distronic Plus behaviours and is definitely far more composed.

FYI in the 2 years I was running the new rubbish the mad woman would start arguments all the time when we're in the car together re. me being unable to drive, it was bad enough the software was silly, I didn't need her moaning as well. Now its normal again, hopefully she won't moan about the issue where a German computer needs to pass a driving test.

So the Nav Mute issue is still unresolved and I'm not sure how they broke it but here's the story

May 2014 bought the car, other than Engine and Gearbox all software is the std production release
Nav Mute works very well

Oct 2014 new comand software at a main dealer with birds eye feature,
(had to go back to tell them to put AC compressor to On - opens the bonnet - "Oh you've got one of them" 15 mins in the workshop back to normal).
Nav Mute works exactly the same

Aug 2017 Amp dies, swapped out for a facelift item, (you get better comand colour scheme),
Nav mute works exactly the same

I realised Nav Mute got broken mid 2019, a week after thinking about how one update mid 2019 seemed to make the SPDV go in noticeable steps instead of imperceptible progression it used to

Jan 2019
Airmatic updated
Front SAM updated to a version from 2006 (goes on quickly little excitement)
maybe this kills the Nav Mute?

Mar 2019
Plugged in to Germany got a message R SAM out of date.
R SAM update to version from 2010
4 x door modules update
4 x MLK seat back rest update
COU (comand knob) update
Rear control Field update (rear seat buttons)
the day after my Autel kit tells me the R SAM software Mercedes just installed is "unknown control software"

Jul 2019
DTR update
Front Radar sensor update
Rear Radar sensor update
PSE update
Cluster update it told us was available 2 years prior but wouldn't programme - now compatible with the car and goes on
is this what made the SPDV junk and broke the Nav Mute ?

Sept 2019
definitely by now trying to unravel the mess of the broken Nav Mute feature
OCP update (allegedly involved in interior vol level for SPDV)
UCP update (front heater knobs)
Adaptive Brake update
Nav Mute is broken

Oct 2019
regrettably flashed Amp backward to standard software pre facelift
TMPS update
According to Merc telematics is all up to date
Tried 2 other COU vol knob switch gear no change
Nav Mute is broken

Jan 2020
Tried the other R SAM - idiot fitted it wrongly (got nowhere)
ZAN central display update
Nav Mute is broken

Jan 2021
re did SCN on the F and R SAMs
Merc says Telematics out of date (how - the same system said it was correct in Oct 2019 and nothing has changed since 2014 ???)
Nav Mute is broken

Feb 2021
Cured the N10/2kn relay fault after replacing the SBR,
Finally fitted the R SAM running 2007 software
Re loaded OCP and got the sun-roof anti trap error to clear
Now Merc says Telematics up to date ???
Nav Mute is broken

Feb 2021
Re tried the 2 other COU vol knob switch gear with the older R SAM software, no change
Realise the non existent Nav Mute vol adjustment feature in tech documentation functions differently on the older R SAM software
Nav Mute is broken

I don't understand why it doesn't function. SPDV (GAL / DRO in Merc speak) adjustment works with ambient noise levels in the car via a microphone, alongside vehicle speed data. I can see how a disruption to these systems may impact it... that's why been chasing R SAM (as it allegedly processes the speed and sound data). We also tried a new vol knob, re flashed the tuner which was not stock for this car (it was better and the backwards step didn't help) and no one touched anything in the telematics.... So the only other major bits that do signal transfer or speed is the cluster and the front SAM

Lies in bold....
The volume of voice output for navigation can be changed during voice output. A certain difference in volume (adjustable in the Volume setting "System settings" menu) between the audio signal and the voice output is maintained automatically. This means that voice output remains audible even in the case of loud audio output.
So where did they hide B25.6 anyone got any ideas?
The volume is adapted to the noise level in the passenger compartment by GAL and the automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation feature DRO. In the process the vehicle speed signal and signal input to the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) are used as a relationship indicator.

Hill Hold and Flashing Brake Programming

BOTUS, sorry no ideas other than, maybe the USA build code 530, COMAND APS USA, isn't the same as yours. As stated, it seems to only mute music at high volume, but I've never attempted to change the settings.

As usual, just guessing, but you seem to have replaced several control modules. My 2007, if one can believe the service records, has not any ECM's replaced and, other than the AAC (a/c) that I did "accidentally" when doing the Telematics, has had no programming updates since 2008.

However, I'll add this for anyone following this journey:

Hill hold-- I have it but can't find if DAS can turn it off. IIRC, I looked in Transmission, Distronic and ABR (active brake), and maybe elsewhere. I really don't care if it is off or on but was curious if it could be deactivated. Don't know... It works just as the OM says:

Holds for 1 second after releasing the brake... I never knew it did that, just that something didn't feel exactly right... Now, that I know what it's doing, I'm okay with it either way...

Flashing Brake (K-11 code option)-- It can be activated or deactivated with DAS. Here is where I found it:

And, under "Coding" it can be set:

For USA owners, if you are curious, it appears to be set to "Activated" so, no need to check if it's on....

So, answering my original question of whether to update programming just because you can: my conclusion is, not necessarily...

Finally, in that regard, here's my engine coding:

As far as I know, the last coding was Mar 2008 at the dealer. I'm assuming the "Software Status 07/10" means it has software from Oct 2007. Anyone know if that old software can be improved? I have no complaints.

Regards... Mark

Any Traffic message or any Nav overlay, can be set (whilst its active) to ANY vol setting you want and the car just remembers it (with no user view of this setpoint).
Thus if you set Nav to say 50% vol and the Radio to 50% vol, they would thus be the same Noise level.
However when NOT broken, the Nav message just like TMC traffic message should fade the radio back a lot, until its ONLY the Nav that is clearly audible (or any other source, in exactly the same way).
When the message stops the radio (or other source) comes progressively back to focus.

If this feature is BROKEN a partial bodge can intervene - this is one they added in late 2006 when a comand update broke everything - and they didn't understand how to unravel the mess they had made - so just added a nasty extra that tries to support a little when using silly volume level. This bodge up is operational once a source is using >75% vol, where a default save your ears helps a bit and makes a 20% difference between the radio and Nav / TMC messages. But you should NEVER notice this nasty feature - as the unbroken original design overrides and does it properly - with more like a 60% fade of the original source....

Mine broke in 2019 and behaves now as though the Mic can't hear the radio - so never remembers to do its job for the original fade feature
I've muddled up a new post on this subject and edited this one I intended stealing a section from....
it was just confirming some engine software date for a reason I now don't know why it was here

BOTUS, I have the V-12 bi-turbo so, I doubt we have the same Motor Electronics (ME 272 DC, in my case). But, thanks for the info... Looks like mine is close, at least updated in 2008 and not the software the car was born with...

On the other stuff:

Muting-- I looked at the pdf and post # 112. So, that is not exactly intuitive but, I was able to change the voice volume. Not too useful, but turns down the music in proportion to the volume "voice" is set to. Low voice volume does more music muting and vice versa... Too many choices IMHO... I'm still not sure, but is that "not broken"?

Speed Limiter-- IIRC, I've seen how to raise the limit to 186. With the V-12, it's seems reasonable that 155 is not "that fast". However, I've had the car "way up there", and IMO, beyond 155 is probably not advisable w/o some aero mods that would, frankly, make the car look silly. It's not that I don't think the car can safely do over 155 but, it just doesn't have the "feel" I think would be needed to drive at that speed. E.g., the right Ferrari feels normal at that speed. A 911 scares the hell out of you, but you know what the car is doing. The S feels like a Camry doing 70. Point is, the S is too good at giving a false sense of security. At 140+ you need to understand things change in milliseconds and you're not in your home recliner anymore!!!

Fuel Level-- Where, what control module is it in? I have never had that, red fuel pump, in the MB. Just never ran it that low. However, once, my Jag got that low. I happened to have my mom in the car and it was irritating and embarrassing to have to stop for gas. But, less so than running out of gas in Houston. I had plenty of gas but, IIRC, the "range" stopped at 50 miles or something.

Oh, didn't realise u have v12... yep numbers will be quite different.... unlocking the limiter on v12 would get somewhere.... NA or turbo? you can wind up a turbo one... check coolant level on charge cooler (has a bottle under a cover somewhere)... they go in an undocumented limp mode if its down a bit

Vol bit, the way you just wrote it, sound like it works.... the level of mute on all sources is the same... maybe easier to notice on music. Its a substantial fade of any sound source as a traffic message (and when working) any Nav overlay cuts in (even on low vol settings_. When broken, at normal source Vol levels there is no change at all with Nav, but traffic messages continue to always mute the source....

Effectively u get THREE user adjustable Vol levels with no indication of what any are and no preset... all three just remember where they "last" were..... So when the wife winds off the Nav vol, whilst you are outside the car, you have no idea she's done it and it stays off forever.... you have to encourage the Nav woman to say something then guess when she's doing it and wind up the Vol quick..... Same with traffic - except these at least show when on screen... but there again you can't make a Traffic message play to set the Vol before a journey. All rather incompetent... and a preset it uses when you start the car would be a far better, normal way to do things. Don't even go to the chauffeur option that can stop Traffic and Nav voice deliberately... its almost undetectable when enabled and even more obscure to get back to normal.

"Tank level" is a tick box in Instrument cluster set up.... if you are searching could you take lots of picture of all menu choices please.... all in German. When enabled - as you scroll up the menu choices for trip computer the new one shows fuel tank level in gallons in the centre of the speedo

I wouldn't expect its particularly wayward over 150mph (get tyres up to 36 PSI) these are normal driving speeds for them. My Omega (like a chevy lumina) was far more composed over 140 than it was under 120... it took on another level of competence and loved it... tank empties fast !

on my S500L (550 in your way of counting) these days UK is Nanny state and not been over 120 for long, but you can see the car starts to make lots sense. Over 120 the car is composed and drivable, under that its just a big handful and not much fun.

I have don 204mph in Germany on the highway a couple of times on a straight line
at that speed you don't want to try a curve, any curve, and if the highway has some sort of up and down you feel like close to fly away (probably REAL wing can fix this, but a REAL wing is big and ugly)
NOT THIS JOKE:

Now that I done than i don't feel like risking my life and others on the highway anymore. Best is to find a airport
My experience is that these V12's behave secure and fine up to +-170mph, you can do curves and take some up and downs
that is fast enough anyway to beat most of other cars from 140 to170 as we have more far torque

I am in love with the V12 BiTurbo
working on a new extreme version soon

Ninja, there's a U-tube somewhere of the V-12 doing 300 kph. I've been close enough to the 155 limiter to know, as you said, it's probably okay to 170. And, we both agree the aero needed to go further would be "big and ugly". I have a friend with a McLaren that he occasionally has driven 180-- I compare that to the S at 155. 10 mph higher in either is bordering on the limit. And, 170 in the V-12 is probably a lot like 190 in the McLaren. Speed is definitely not linear!!! Not too many years back, I had set my sights on a car that would do 200. Once I got a car that would do "only" 190, I realized 200 wasn't ALL that important...

BOTUS... Interesting. I ran the Xentry SIM to see what I could find. As usual, MB settings are a lot less than intuitive...

Abbreviated, here's what I came up with in:

Info and Comm > Instrument cluster > Diagnostic to plant spec's > Control Unit Adapt > Variant coding > Variantenkodierung:

The first variable is "Tank warning" and:

And the last is, "Tank Info".

Note, this is SIM, but I assume these, one or both, can be activated or deactivated??? BOTUS, do you know which one will add "gallons left" to the trip monitor?

Also, cool, are some of the other settings, e.g. "tachometer":

I'm assuming you can set the speedo to read to 200 or even 220 MPH. I know, silly, especially given the top speed discussions above. Still, I find it amusing how many people when they get behind the wheel will ask, "Is that how fast it is?", when seeing the speedo!!!

And, there are many other settings to F with...

I'll fool with real DAS later and report back. Nothing like messing with "the best or nothing"... and dressing up an old nag...

Any input welcomed...

Regards... Mark

Hi Mark

thanks for the photo's

FYI some AMG options aren't there with the std cluster coding (although some how, some force then on... although my local expert thought serious risk as some cluster brain's are not big enough to take the programming of extras... )

I think Tank warning is the Red pump symbol... I thought the guy forgot to programme when we turned it off.... as it never changed, but he was adamant he had and it just didn't work
I think Tank Info is the level
Later clusters get to remember the last user choice. rather than default to trip info and nothing displaying that we get display
Some other options are for Taxi boys... I think Tacho is - Remember in Germany a Mercedes is only ever a Taxi
I think the 300 bit works but just squashes the display.....
The MPH / KPH is exactly what u need to go to funny money countries... and later cars got the menu for user choice

Thanks for the translation BOTUS. Those three pic's are not everything, just the ones I snapped in "Variantenkodierung". And, that was SIM mode, not my actual vehicle.

As said, I'll hook up the multiplexer soon and check out the actual settings and report back. So, more to come...

Here's the actual settings on my 2007 S600 in Xentry in:

Info and Comm > Instrument cluster > Diagnostic to plant spec's > Control Unit Adapt > Variant coding > Variantenkodierung:

All 7 pages of them!!!

I was interested in the "tachometer" (speed) display on page 4 and the tank info on page 7.

Here's the speed limit display:

I set that to 200 mph and the tank info to active... And, I got no change:

I was hoping to change the speedo to 0 - 200 mph. Just guessing here, but maybe it changed the digital speedo to 200... And, the tank info but only if you're about to run out of fuel... Neither of which I probably will ever see... However, there may be another setting in one of the 7 pages that May change something.

So, it's a toss up. See what you can do with changes to "variant coding" or watch the grass grow...
