Interesting morning

Took my parents to the airport, parked the car in the garage. Hour later I come back and the car wont unlock. I clearly see that I forgot to turn of the lights because I used front and rear fog lights in the morning.
Had a hard time unlocking the car with a metal key, but somehow after some panic I was able to open it and get in.
I was pretty sure that the car wouldn't start, but it DID. I almost cried from relief.
Towing the car out would be impossible. Getting a tow truck or any help to JFK parking garage would take hours.
When I started the car, SRS disabled message came on at first but then went away. I suspect the big battery in trunk got low, but the starter battery did its job.

Got home, everything works.

Any idea why the car would not unlock with a remote or pulling on the handle? Low batt in trunk I assume?

You drained the battery in the trunk. It charged up on the way home. Check the voltage now to make sure it's over 12v. If it is, you're probably ok. If it's less than 12v, you're going to need a new rear battery. You definitely have some stored fault codes.

You might consider putting a trickle charger battery maintainer on the rear battery if you don’t drive the car frequently. My SL has the two battery system and requires a charger on the rear battery when not in use.
You should also clear all the codes that may have been triggered due to battery low voltage. Could be several that result in no parts failures but make diagnostics challenging when parts do fail.

Thank you.
Drove the car again just now and all is well.

How would I check the voltage? Just voltage meter at rear batt? Or from steering control?
How would i check for codes? I dont have xentry. Just regular scanner?

Check voltage at the post near the front battery. You'll see it. It's the one that doesn't go directly to the front battery. Check it off, then check it with the car on. You should have just over 12v off and 13-14v on. With a regular scanner, you can clear anything that could give you a check engine light. You'll still have stored low voltage codes in the modules. It would be a good idea to clear those when you can. An indy or a buddy with a diagnostic computer can do it for you. It doesn't hurt anything to have stored diagnostic codes. You'll just wish you did next time you have to diagnose an issue.

Shadly1 thanks for answering both questions from OP.
OP if you’re interested in DIY an upgraded scanner to include xentry is a worthwhile investment unless you have an Indy or buddy with one. It’s the kind of investment that will pay you back many times over if DIY is your thing or you just want to diagnose the problem so you will be informed if others do the work

I'm wondering why there was no chime indicating that you left the lights on, or why they didn't work if in 'auto' position?
Yeah, getting stranded anywhere would be awful, but YES especially at JFK!

Thank You all for chiming in.
I was thinking about getting Xentry, but that whole setup is 700-900 and im not sure how long I will keep the car. Plus searching for a right seller is a bit frustrating.

As for auto feature, that morning I used fog lights so it was in manual mode and was in a huge rush with airport related issues.

where I live it would be an unusual day if there wasn't some filth trying to hack any car in the vicinity with digital kit, to either steal unlocking signals or to jam the car from locking - its been like that every day for at least the last 12 years

weirdos loitering in cars in busy car parks are never there for fun - One day I was asking a neighbour to check his CCTV to see if what I had seen on mine the night before showed more detail - as we watched his, I said there you go, its those two scum walking up the street right now. His wife chastised me for making outrageous assumptions, then we watched one walk up to a flower bed out side his house and retrieve a hidden gadget and walk off. I went out to confront him and all hell kicked off - an undercover team had been watching them...

any BMW pre 2011 can be stolen inside 2 minutes by connecting to the ODB2 socket and calculating how to make a $20 ebay blank work - just like a factory replacement key will
post 2012 it takes 10 minutes of time wasting

all Audi's inside 40 seconds you tweak the rear fuse board and then jump up front and code a blank - and drive off as if you own it

but the theft award goes to JLR - want a Free Range Rover ? - you can code a blank key from not touching a locked car, to driving off - in less than 10 seconds

of course that's the difficult way for clever people - keyless go - you just walk round the outside of the houses with a laptop and your mate jumps in the car and they drive off inside 5 seconds

.
