S550 0-60 question
I noticed in the 2016 DOG that the S550 was listed as 4.5sec. to 60. MB website shows 4.8. Since there is no change engine-wise between the years I wonder if it's simply listing the 4matic time instead of the RWD?
Personally I can say that the S-Class is definitely slower than our SL (which is listed as 4.5sec. but tested with 3.9 to 4.2sec.).

4Matic cars have more traction (hint: all 4 wheels provide thrust), and lower 0-60 times than RWD cars of the same HP.
However, RWD cars are more exhilarating to drive (or scary depending on the capabilities of the driver.)

Great answer. This is the same reason why a S63 with less HP is faster to 60 then a S65 with more HP. AWD is only on the S63. Now if you do a 0-186MPH test the S65 will win.

@Mitch_Alsup is absolutely correct about AWD giving an edge and this is the reason most high performance cars now all come with AWD. I think just about Mercedes' entire AMG lineup is now AWD.

AWD really helps with acceleration. For another data point the S600 generates 523 hp @ 4,900-5,300 rpm and 0-60s is "only" 4.5s but with the S600 the car might be tuned more for comfort and a smooth acceleration curve than head snapping torque, unlike the AMG models.

Please know that I understand the differences in performance between RWD and AWD. My question was to get a confirmation that the 4matic does 4.5 and the RWD does 4.8
Neither MB's website (listing 4.8sec., not specifying any version) nor the DOG (listing 4.5sec., not specifying any version) provides any detail or confirmation by model/option.
Normally their info matches across the board. For all I know it could be a typo...

I also think tires make a difference. If the vehicle in RWD, you can likely improve on your numbers a bit by getting wider rear tires for a staggered setup but at some point you are at the edge of useable traction with only 2 wheels receiving the torque.
I personally like the feeling of torque gripping all 4 wheels but I know some people enjoy their sideways driving fun
