Leftover '15 Discounts For In Stock Vehicles
What can one expect now? My neighbor bought a leftover '14 sometime around the end of the MY and received about a 20% discount on an msrp of about $110k (the dealer had about 25 or so in stock at the time if I remember correctly); the color combo blk/blk wasn't their first preference due to scratches showing so easily but they ended up liking it very much. I understand there is some substantial trunk money available from the manufacturer beginning to appear for the leftover 15's.
Thnx

I'll be curious as well to see what Dealers are offering on 2015 models. There's 5 MB dealers within a 80 mile radius from me and each of them have around 8 to 10 2015 models. I'm waiting for end of September to make any offers realizing the good color/option combos may well be gone by then. Would 20% off MSRP be the best deal one could expect? That would put some of the lower priced models within the same price rang of 2014 CPOs...

I was offered 15% off MSRP in writing today with no dealer fees etc on a stunning irr/black nappa 550 (cash deal). I think with each month going forward you can expect another ~2% through Dec. The longer the vehicle has remained in the dealer's inventory the bigger the discount. I tried for more today but even though they claimed they were into their holdback (which I knew not to be true since MBUSA has $5000 of trunk money right now) they would not go beyond a true/no extra fees 10% off on their end, but when you add in the trunk money it came to about $17,500.00 in terms of a total discount or 15% in my case. The holdback is another $5,500.00 (based on an MSRP of ~$115,000.00), so if it were late Nov/Dec they'd give most/all of that up and there may even be more trunk money meaning the discount will go ~20% or maybe even a bit more.
We're very picky about the cars we buy and the one we found was very late production (June) so the car was very fresh and kept indoors; no permanently flat spotted tires or corroded/warped brake rotors I've experienced in many other earlier production (Jan-March)15's that have been sitting outside baking in the FL sun and humidity. In essence we are most likely going to take the 15% discount and get the car we want rather than roll the dice and wait for another ~5% and having the limited choice you referenced above.
I'd be interested to know how much do these cars depreciate in a year (20%?) and what would the difference in price be between an identical '15 vs '16 one year from now; $5000.00? My reason for asking is, how much of a large discount is needed to truly make it worthwhile to get a leftover '15 vs a much smaller discount on a '16?

Remember, the MY15 and MY16 are virtually the same car.
My point being, if you are keeping the car for an extended period of time, take the MY15, because as time goes on, they get closer and closer in value and miles become more important. Over a much shorter period of time, maybe the depreciation becomes more important.
In any event, I think with the 15%, you are doing well. I doubt there is a 15% difference between buying a used MY14 and MY15, today.
Just IMHO.

How long are you keeping this car for? If you keep it long enough, none of this matters.
Remember, the MY15 and MY16 are virtually the same car.

We're also considering the new '16 7er which I can buy at invoice due to a close friend owning a BMW dealership which may make more sense, but I'm not sure. The car is primarily for the wifey and she wants a large safe sedan; I'd prefer we get the S Coupe thinking it's plenty large and safe, but she has shot that down several times (she truly means well).

Thanks for your thoughts. I would try to keep it ~3 years although I don't know if I can hold out that long; it would truly depend on how much we like the car. I'd be more comfortable doing the deal @ 18% (was given information by a very credible source the discount range right now is running (15-18% on S550V's), as I was informed today a current MY/'16 S550V would drop ~20% the minute a customer takes possession and with it being a left over '15 add at least another ~5% more. Based on an MSRP of $115k I'm looking at $28,750 right out of the gate minus the $17,000 discount still leaves another $11,750 of depreciation without even putting any miles on the car.
When you go to sell your car in 3 years, the difference in a 15 vs. 16 is probably going to be less than $10,000. I say this because if you look now, the difference in value between a used 14 and used 15 seems to be less than $10,000.

These are a whole lot of numbers and not sure any of them are correct or even pertinent.

I'm considering a $76k 2014 s550 with 16k miles nonCPO since its at a BMW dealer but the dealer is a no haggle one and won't budge on price. It's been sitting in their used car lot for a few months. If I can get a new 2015 s550 that has Msrp of $108k for $20k off for $88k then paying just $12k more for a newer model where I'm the first owner makes sense.

The #s were given to me today by the sales mgr and your figure of ~$10,000 difference between each models year works out to about 8% so the hit may be even more than the ~5% mentioned above. It appears if one can get a good discount on a '16 it may be better than getting a large discount on a leftover '15? I truly don't know if I will be able to hang on for three yrs. Even though my CPA advocates leasing for me, I prefer not to have payments on anything so I'm trying to do this as intelligently as possible without that option. Curious why you went for the '15 7er & not the '16?
I got the 15 7er for my wife instead of the 16 for several reasons.
1. She loved the look of the car, and I am really not sure the 16 is better looking. This car has an Individual interior which will not be available for some time in the 16's, so her interior is certainly as nice, and probably nicer than any early 16.
2. While the 16's will have a higher degree of electronics and toys, the 15 is loaded, and my wife won't ever use 75% of what she has.
3. We got a great price on a gorgeous car.
4. My wife is happy.

I got the "less than $10,000" from KBB, which I believe is a reliable source. Not sure what is going on in the real world, as I have not checked. Good luck with your analysis.

The 7 you bought for your wife is quite lovely, hope she has many miles of 's.

My car is what is called a PA4 custom order meaning I have a one of a kind interior. Along with my custom interior, I got the steering wheel.
My custom order took 8 months to be produced and shipped to the West coast.

IIRC, MB now buys out 3mths lease pmts on S sedans to incent one to lease another MB
IIRC, Porsche buys out 12mos pmts to peddle 991s
China is imploding: where the Germans (until recently) earned ?45-65% of their profits; given their other major mkt, the US, is already saturated, would suspect more cheap leases/lease pull-fwds are coming to US in next 1-2+yrs
Would just do a 24mo lease on a desirable MY16; disct diffces are rounding error on leases at any competent, convenient dealer (and need to calc value of a dealer that will value a repeat customer vs any lemonworthy car, which happens often enough to matter even w/generally high-quality latest S-Class)
Reality is $0 down, 24mos leases are likely really 18mo leases on a fast-depreciating disposable in a world of 0% rates and glut of luxury commodities....capital likely better deployed in short positions rather than in an obsoleting consumable like any car

When is the redesign due for the s550? A 2y lease with about 18 driving before you start looking at the next car may not buy enough time to get a new design...
I timed my BMW 7 series with what was guessed by the internet info at the time (2013) to be a redesign year for the 7 series. My lease ends in December so I can jump into a 2016, which is all new. Nicely timed and thought out (patting myself on back). The only problem with my perfect plan is that I really didn't like having the 7 because of all of the maintenance issues. So I am waiting for my 2016 s550. Trying to decide on length of lease.

One pay leases are the dumbest and riskiest ideas out there... Please avoid under any circumstance.
