2017 S550 or 2018 S450

*** Got 2017 S550 on Monday ***

I have owned S550 model cars since 2013 and currently enjoy 2015 S550.

the dealer is offering me amazing deals on 2 cars: 2017 S550 and 2018 S450, both 4matic.

I understand the difference in technology, specs, etc.

for $200/month difference would you go with cheaper 2017 S550 vs 2018 S450?

2018 S560 would’ve been perfect, however it is more than I want to spend and is not a consideration at this point.

vote here:-)

I'll add this. I don't even like the new E AMG. I'm not sold on the rear end, interior trim and that hideously tacky large display screen, so what it's a tiny bit faster than the w212 MY16 smaller engine, the sound is inferior to the w212 5.5L V8 the inside looks like MB copied Japanese automakers please nerd herd with the technology in all its just a smaller S. If I'm going to buy a vehicle that MB used as their flagship to make all the other models from now on follow suit it's the S550. Traditionally and class. The S450 seriously what the fv-ck is that. Get the S550.

I would go for the 550 as I like pre facelift model's styling a tad better over facelifted ones

Thank you all!

Your honest responses and recommendations just made my day! I totally agree that S450 is an effort to bring more affordable S-class (as they do in Europe) to US customers who prefer to seat at the back but definetely is not as enjoyable from driver’s prespective.

I will go with S550! Yes!

The S550 much like the E550 are the flagships of MB. Now however MB, is a watered-down product with paying attention on smaller engines, and slapping Ipads on the dashboardashboards as if an iPad odometer comes off as intrinsic.

If you care about the semi-autonomous driving features then the 2018 is the way to go as they are way upgraded over the 2017. If wanting a bigger motor is more important than stick with the 2017. That will be your deciding factors. Oh, and saving $200.00 a month over 36 months is not chicken feed either.

2015 S550
Just traded in 2015 S550 for 2018 S450...didn't think too much of it before but once I actually got into the 2018, I have to say somehow Mercedes did improve on an already excellent car. I especially like the interior lighting upgrades, its really sick at night. And don't worry about engine power, S450 accelerates just fine. Have not fully tested out the improved distronic yet. What I don't like is now the surround camera system is now harder to access...guess just not used to the new ergonomics yet.

The S550 is hardly the flagship. Price-wise it's in the lower end of the spectrum. Not that it makes a difference, it's a fantastic car. Don't understand the nonsense about iPads and smaller engines, people buy these cars because it represents the latest in luxury sedans and safety.

Never a wrong choice! The better choice is only the S560; the S450 better selection only if the latest tech matters most. the 2018's do drive and work a bit better as all the core technologies inside the car have evolved. But all depends on how each car is optioned IMO.

Good luck and enjoy! There is no wrong choice here

Is there gonna be more tech upgrades to the 2019? I'd think must be able to order a 2019 soon and think they'd be out the end of the summer? I've thought about replacing my 2015. I may end up with a 2019 S560 within a year or so.

Look I have a S600 Maybach with the V12 engine. It is wonderful but I drove a S500 and it was very nice as well. What I am saying is as long as the car has enough power then pick whatever you like best........

No big changes to the 2019, and you can order one now. This thread included a dealer order guide. If you happen to get a more recent one (just ask your salesperson), please post it.

Love my "iPad screens"! Not sure why people are saying they fairly... suck. They are KILLER! But honestly, we can't decide anything for you, just go out and drive them both. You'll know in 30 minutes.

?????

Anyway. The S450 is the way to go if you are saving $200 and the tech is much improved. Its a mid cycle refresh so I say 2018 if OK with the smaller engine (I have an E400 and its a great engine in the S450 too). Also your ego has to be OK with the lower numeric trunk badge if that is a concern to you.

As long as it is low mileage, 2017 is the choice I would go with. Someone else just saved you probably $35,000 with the hit. Who is really going to notice the difference anyway.

Enjoying my wife's new ride

All, I got busy to report back:
*** Took the delivery on Monday! ***

1. Yes, I did test drive S450 - ugh... slow poke with no power. I am happy there are drivers who enjoy that ride, this is just not me. My 2017 Lexus LX570 had more power and fun to drive.
2. 2017 S550 drives a bit nicer than my 2015 S550, yet overall the same car.
3. My wife is happy with this 2017 S550, so does my 2.7 yo baby ;-)
4. Now we are a family of 2x S550 W222 :-)

2018 S450
Just bought the Mercedes 2018 S450 with 8,000 miles. I am wondering how the feedback from users of the 2018 is on Mbrace and its related services. Is it worth it?

I also went to put into favorites radio stations and I was only only allowed 7 is that all that I can save?

2018 improvements over 2017 were very significant, almost like a new car instead of an mid cycle update.
In real world, S450 will not give up anything to S550 in performance, is much more pleasant and satisfying in daily use.
Recently had one as a loaner for almost a month while my S63 was waiting for replacement shocks, it is a great car, makes S560 an overkill, I did not "suffer" from the switch from my car at all.
Picking S450 over outdated and frankly boring S550 is a no brainer.
.....and there really is a "replacement for displacement" nowadays, that old adage is no longer relevant, just compare the S63, 2017 vs 2018.

I have it but haven't used it for a year. I thought it would be useful but I guess I'm too old-school or something. But they got my $. :-)
