W222 price go down a lot when 2021 s class come out?
Hey guys, I’m new to the forum, I am going to buy a 2016 or ‘17 s class next year when the new s class model comes out, do you think the price of w222 will go down exponentially or should I expect normal depreciation as it goes every year?
Many thanks

In general, any model change will impact resale significantly, more so than a facelift. The W223 will likely have a more controversial interior with the large center screen. This may make a few more people grab late-model MY20's and skew the values for a couple of months...

When the W222 came out I think it had a bit of an impact on the W221. I suspect there is a premium for cars that look like the latest model year but it also depends on how elegant or hideous the new model is. I have pretty much given up on Lexus products because of the monster grills they are putting on the new models but my wife loves her 2015 RX350. Probably our last Lexus though because of the design direction. I happen to like my MY15 S class and will probably drive it a few more years and then upgrade to a 19 or 20. I never buy new luxury cars though as they drop like a hot rock in value in the first 2 years, plus I would never buy the first year of a new model as they tend to have more bugs.

Unless you buy or own a 2015-2017 with 40K-80K miles (which means it's already down to the $38K-$44 based on options), then you will certainly lose thousands of dollars (10K minimum). For that reason, I would encourage those people who care about resale value to only by a W222 that's already in the range of $45K or less as those are the car that will lose few thousands only while all others will lose maybe $10K minimum despite of how many miles there is on them.
Another option, get a W222 2015-2017 for $45K-$60K or 2018-220 for $70K-110K but make sure if you choose any of these 2 options to keep it for 5+ years otherwise u'll be losing 10s of thousands in less than a year!. Just like a bad financial decision when u buy brand new or almost brand year a year before a new redesigned model is about to be released... It's really hard to advise on financial topics by the way, some people don't care about car values and never thought about the money spent on cars as for many people it's just a car... but for those who care about resale value and how they spend their money then I think it's best to buy W222 that's already reached $40K (already too close to the lower limit when the new W223 is released), meaning if anything it would only lose few thousands!... The W222 is a great looking car with great features (and most important it looks so modern and was designed to stand for at least 10 years in terms of how it looks inside outside even compared to the weird looking design of new electric cars) so should hold it's price for a while but only for used ones that have already depreciated in price.

Maybe throw in a 25% import tax on new German cars in a trade war and your old S-Class will hold, I know that tax has may not happen but If it did , they would hold since who is gonna pay 25% more. Just playing here so don’t start yelling at me LOL

The 2019 222 has a $20,000 CAD discount right now from the factory (new). So yeah...

As Wolfman mentioned, new radical dashboard redesign might steer some folks to old model leftover cars.
That could prevent larger depreciation.

Just look at a Black Book next summer. You will see for yourself.

That will just be fodder for a car salesman.
Book value will be book value.
If someone wants/prefers the old body style the price will be low for them.

you make yourself sound like a dick though, when you start discussion with a word “bull****”

New car models make prior body styles depreciate more. The star on the hood and the S on the trunk lid does not change facts.
If I am a dick for stating the obvious so be it.
Sometimes people need to hear facts not passive opinions by car owners that love their cars. And still think MSRP is a static number.

they will continue to drop just like every other car. But the better newer lower mileage cpo cars will still bring a premium as always.

Don’t overcomplicate the issue. Cars depreciate.

Everyone agrees that cars continue to depreciate in general. Absent likely knows much more about S-Class depreciation than you do but that there is a short term delay in depreciation with controversial new models is a given with the S-Class.
Happened before going from the W140 to the W220 and may happen again if the new model is not a winner. S-Class buyer are a conservative bunch. If that is the case I see steady pricing for another 3 months or so, then the drop continues.

Rami that’s how I bought. I never buy new, but look at older S63 or any s550. They don’t hold Like our Porsche Turbos, and are going to 5k dollar cars one day, just a fact, look at any craigslist and show me any s550 2005 and down worth more, we know why we bought these cars and it was not for a collectable to increase in value, it was for driving the baddest sedan that I could buy with someone else taking the major depreciation hit. These cars are write offs for the rich, who else could lose 100k in less than 3 years?

Correct, I wouldn't keep an S-class for more than 6 years thought to avoid waiting until it reaches $5K value, that's why I buy them used (~2 years old at the time of purchase when the 40% depreciation has already occurred on used one) and sell them after 3-4 years (~5 years old at the time I sell them) therefore end up loosing no more than $15K on average (~$3K per year). Maintenance is normally on manufacturer warranty during first 3-4 year and then as soon as extended warranty/CPO ends I'd sell it after about a year. Unlike all previous cases, am planning to to keep my current S550 forever as I feel it could run for 30 years if maintained, and I always wanted to try keeping a car for 30+ years.

When will MB release the W223? I just sold my W221 S550, a few days ago, Thankfully I have an E class for now. Waiting for prices to drop a little more on the W222. I really want the 3D Audio.
I test drove this car, a few days ago. https://www.texascarsdirect.com/used...UG8FB5HA290056
But just cant get past that it does not have the AMG appearance and its color. Other than that, I love these options!
