Data connection Temporarily Unavailable nightmare 2017 S550

Never really had any problems with the internet connection on my 2019 E450 Wagon, but on this 2017 S550 I just got I just cant seem to get the internet connection to work. I've subscribed to the entertainment package and security package and it does me no good. I can't even open apps as there is no internet connection. I've been on the phone many times with the tech help desk at MB to no avail. Each time they put a ticket in for it and nothing ever comes out of it. They keep telling me everything checks out fine to make matters worse. I think I'll just cancel both those plans, I was hoping to have internet radio but looks like that is not going to happen. I had the car at the dealer all day yesterday to investigate the issue. They said it was fine and working. Nope. Mercedes should really be embarrassed with themselves for this pre 2018 Mbrace nightmare and at the very least they should at least have some tech support even just one person who can handle cases like this. This is the last Mercedes I will ever buy. One thing they did get working yesterday at the dealer is the app can now unlock and lock the doors and remote start the car.

Thanks for posting. I wish that applied to my car as it could be an answer but my car was built 09/16 so about 8 or 9 months earlier than what that document says. I suppose a mistake could have happened where they mismatched s/n numbers though. I'll have to mention it to the dealer if this is something worth looking into with the star tool. What gets me is I dropped the car off to the dealer and they claimed it was all set when done. I do notice the app is working now though just no internet. Before the car went to the dealer it had no communication at all and benz could not even see the car. Now Benz says everything is fine with the car even though there is no internet and unable to open apps or internet radio, this is what really gets me. They have no problem taking my money for the extra services even though I'm telling them they are not working. Bad company.

I finally found out yesterday what was really going when the data connection temporarily unavailable message started saying “internet connection unavailable as it’s not part of your subscription package. When I called the mb help desk they said yes we do show that you subscribe but internet does not work on all cell phone networks. IMO Verizon is not happy MB switched to ATT on the 2018 cars whatever the answer I had them transfer me over to billing and put in for a refund as I paid for these services 2 weeks before. I wasted a lot of time trying to get internet radio or even apps to open. It was not going to happen. Needless to say I’m not happy about all this.

Will be interesting to know if the pre-facelifted cars (with COMAND 5*2) can still use the online functions with the built-in apps like Webbrowser and TuneIN (check e.g. Radio538 in NL to be sure if it supports https). If so, it is even more crazy that they stopped support for this in the newer COMAND 5*5 ???

Ya really pissed me off. I tried it in major areas too like Ft Myers Fl and Sarasota. They had no problems taking my 288 dollars either and signing me up for 18 per month for internet radio. The 288 dollars was the safe and secure package. I didn’t feel so safe and secure that’s for sue. The best or nothing. Lol. I chose nothing. They are going to refund the 288 dollars to my credit card. What gets me was they never offered to do that even know they knew the internet would never work at this point in time and kept telling me to try different things that did not work and wasted my time.

Does anyones Data connection work on the 2017 and below? If it does is it intermittent? I'm thinking about giving it one last try in trying to get this up and working. It just does not make much sense that if gets the dreaded Data Connection Unavailable every time.

Instead of wasting so much money on what is know to be a poor Internet service, why don't you spend a few hundred bucks on the CarPlay interface and be done? These issues have been known for years and shouldn't be a surprise...

The theory is once you get it up and running it’s running. I think I have it figured out how to fix it. Have an appointment at the dealer tomorrow. The serial number off the command unit must be hit into the 4g lte module and that should fix the issue. I don’t have a star tool though. I’m actually surprised there was not a class action lawsuit over this issue years ago. It affects 2014 to 2017 models. I’m not one for paying good money for something and then not staying persistent to have it work as the engineers originally intended for it to work.

I brought the car to the dealer for this issue with no internet connectivity nearly a week ago and it's still there. I have a loaner they gave me. They cannot seem to get it up and working. It is not acceptable as the car is still under factory warranty. I do use internet quite a bit in my wagon and it is very useful sometimes when I cannot get a cell phone connection which seems to happen when there is a lot of people around using cell phones like in long line traffic jams etc. The incar wifi always seems to work in my 2019 E450 wagon, strange I guess it must be on a higher priority cell tower or something over my regular cell phone? they are both on the Verizon Network. I sure hope they can solve this issue soon. I had thought it was something to do with the car never being setup when new at the VPC and that the internet has probably never worked in this car in over 3 years, I just bought it used a couple of months ago. It should be 4g LTE as in the 2017 models like my S550 apparently MB upgraded to a 4g LTE module whereas the older ones like my 2015 S550 I use to have only had the 3 g module. Had this car only had the 3 G module I probably would not have even bothered having the dealer repair this issue, not worth it too slow. It is a feature of the car and suppose to work so if the dealer cant solve the issue it will have to raised up to a higher level at MB themselves to take some kind of action. I really do want the internet radio to work and also all the other functions that run off internet with this car, they can be very useful. Sometimes I have my grand kids in the car and they like the incar wifi for there connected devices. Plus I find the weather apps and traffic apps very useful. I do a lot of miles.

Got the car back still no internet, they say it's the mercedes server with Verizon which is only on 2017 and below cars. Does anyone have a 2017 or below car where the internet actually works? Like internet radio, searches, WIFI, apps, etc? I've given up hope it'll ever work at this point.

Had Data connection up and running for around 3 weeks now, I guess it goes to show if you want something bad enough keep on trying. Dealer had the car a total of 9 days back a month ago and had no luck fixing it, for whatever reason I was on a long phone call and after it worked and has been working since then. Sometimes Apps or Internet Radio takes a while to load, just have to keep trying a few times. I notice sometimes if I click on the internet browser then get the message that it's no longer available and then go back to apps or internet radio it will will then load. I just have the Entertainment package and not the safe and secure package. At this point everything in the car is working as it should. I have even got use to the beeper that goes off when you park close to objects, it works great, unlike the newer cars though it just goes off later when the car gets within a foot or so of walls, poles or whatever is in front or behind you. It is helpful.

I'm having similar issues... I bought a 2016 GL450 in Feb of 2019 and have gotten the "Data Connection Currently Unavailable" error ever since. After going back and forth with mbrace several times, they told me to take it to the dealership. I finally did... and they are on day 13 of trying to figure it out. I have called and sent emails but haven't gotten an answer regarding whether the cell module in my car is 3G or 4G. If it indeed runs over the Verizon network and is 3G, I will be less than pleased if they spent this much time and charge me hundreds of dollars to fix something that will stop working in December when Verizon retires their 3G network. Furthermore, since I bought the car used, they had to deactivate the previous owner's mbrace account before my activation would work. Does anyone know how the mbrace activation is treated by Verizon? Is it considered a transfer of service or a new activation of the cellular module, or does the cellular module remain activated by Mercedes/mbrace regardless of the owner's activation of mbrace? Since Verizon stopped activating 3G devices on its network in July, 2018 and I bought the car used in Feb, 2019, I have to wonder if that isn't the reason why I've never been able to get the internet connected apps to work... but this is purely speculation.

You’d have a 3g module in that car being a 2016. 2017 like mine they went to 4g. Might not even be worth it with just 3g although internet radio should still sound good. Verizon is still offering the service for them and if setup right it should work. Like I found out there was a issue with these cars when they initially came in and the sn numbers they need to plug in didn’t match. I’ll answer more later I’m on a bike now. Mine still works though. You can tell when you have connection as the two yellow arrows will come up. If those are not on the display you will get the not available message.

Thanks for the reply! I did ask them to confirm that the correct HU serial number was registered and they very quickly said "we asked the engineer and he said it is correct as he sees that it was working at one point." Although it never worked for me... I can't speak for the previous owner. I'm not sure if they confirmed that the *correct* serial number is registered. I posted about a week ago looking for help on where to find the serial number, but didn't get a response. I have a picture of the HU that I took when I installed an aftermarket Android screen, but can't tell if one of the numbers on the sticker is the serial number.

It’s a tough problem to solve. My car was at the dealer and I got it back still not working and then for some reason those yellow arrows in the upper right appeared and it started working and worked since. That was last March. The internet radio is still ok with 3 g. I had it working on my last car a 2015 s550. Mb has eliminated the web browser though. It’s kinda a flawed design though. I have a 2019 e450 wagon and data connection in that car is perfect. That uses att. I’m actually surprised there was not a class action lawsuit or something with the pre 2018 cars. Mine is very hit or miss. In some areas you won’t get the yellow data arrows therefore it gives you that no data connection message. Other areas it works perfect. Right after starting the car the data arrows come up and then it allows access to online features. I really do think for the most part it’s something to do with Verizon. May not be even worth it for you tinkering with it anymore plus you’ll save the 18 dollars a month on the entertainment package.
