S560 VS S63 ( Sedan)

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to get the last year of W222. Money is not an issue for me, and I can afford both. I will be using my S-Class daily and will put an average of 12K miles per year. Would you go for S63 or S560, and why? Thanks in advance for your participation.

Didn’t you just purchase a new 2020 S560 a month or so ago? Are you having second thoughts?

Thats true. I didn’t share this with the forum. Someone T-boned me and my S-class was totaled. I have to get another S class and in doubt between 560 or 63 this time!

Hopefully you are ok. I have had three new W222s. I had a ‘14 S550 4matic, a ‘16 S550 4matic and now a ‘19 S63 AMG. My ‘14 was totaled when a driver literally side swiped me on an interstate highway and I hit a tree at about 60 mph totaling my ‘14. So I understand the sheer frustration you are faced with.

I now absolutely love my ‘19 S63. I daily drive it. I have about 20,000 miles on it now. Only one issue on the car so far—the front struts were bad and replaced under warranty. I believe another forum member also had his front struts replaced under warranty as well (I believe this is a known issue with the S63 as the struts can make a thumping noise like mine did going over larger bumps). I did European Delivery in November 2018. Absolutely love the car. It has a double personality. It drives like my other two earlier W222s in comfort mode but when I put it into sport plus it is an absolute “race car”. It is the perfect car for me because I can treat it like the client toting car I use it for but I can then flip a switch and turn it into a 0-60mph time of 3.29 seconds (my best time as you can use the car technology to time your race starts).

I simply wished I would have purchased an S63 sooner. With that said, in the summer of 2017 I rented a ‘17 S63 in Germany for 10 days for Autobahn driving (love it so much that when I came back to the US I had it in my mind I was going to buy an S63 for the replacement of the ‘16 W222. The ‘18, ‘19 and ‘20 S63s are a much more refined car than the ‘14, ‘15, ‘16 and ‘17 S63s (IMHO) with a new motor and a completely redesigned rear subframe just for the S63 beginning in ‘18.

I would absolutely recommend the new S63 over the S560 especially if you are at all thinking about it. You will not regret the decision as long as you don’t mind splurging for the extra cost of the S63 over the S560.

Thank you. For some reason, I can't stop thinking about the S63. I love the exhaust noise and daily driving comfort.

The big questions are how fast and/or how quickly do you like to drive and how important is comfort and ride quality. I have owned Porsche Turbos, BMW V-12’s and 427 Corvettes, all very quick and very fast. However, when it comes to my daily driver, which will be stuck many times in bumper to bumper L.A. traffic, I want a sedan that is serene, quiet, very comfortable and pretty much oblivious to road imperfections and the ever increasingly insane world outside. My 2018 S560 is amazingly quick and fast, way more so than I will ever need, even if I am being chased by an angry mob! However, the seats are not overly bolstered like those in a sports car, the ride is soft, yet nimble, with my Magic Body Control, 18” wheels and Bridgestone QuietTrack conventional tires and the exhaust note is quite muffled. Is it as quick and fast as an S63? No. Is it way more comfortable? Only your derrière can answer that.

Streamliner,

Your posts are too funny. I am sure you might want NO PANO ROOF either in case the anarchists take a baseball bat to your roof!

I have owned two W222s S550s and a '19 S63. I just completed a 3000 mile roundtrip from Pittsburgh, PA to Houston, TX and back in the S63. It is an amazing fast and extremely comfortable car (same comfort as a S560). The '18 and above S63 is just as comfortable as any S560 if in comfort mode with the S63. Oh and ya it does not have your favorite run flat tires that I know you like as much as the PANO ROOF.

I had a 18 S63 and loved the car. However, I had to trade it in early because of a few issues. Constantly had outside sound coming through , like where a window is cracked open and I’m personally more comfortable in a SUV. I ended up getting a GLS 63. I loved the car it’s self and couldn’t imagine getting a 560 which my father has. The amg just handles so much better, much quicker where it can drive nice and smooth or become a beast. Seats might be alittle tighter, but nothing to tight. I highly recommend the amg. I’m currently confused on the new gls 63 vs the maybach however that’s because the gls maybach is much more luxury

I believe that you may drive quicker & faster than I do. You probably like the louder exhaust note, the sportier ride and the AMG body work. For you and others, the S63 is obviously the way to go. I prefer my “Plain Jane” S560. To each, his own.

OK, thanks for explaining that. I apologize for using that word, but the idea of motorists being chased and/or surrounded by an angry mob was in the news yesterday, so it was on my mind. Didn’t mean to get political.

They are the exact car depending on how you option them and if money is no object then by the s65 and have everything in 1 car. The v12 makes the car smoother. The problem with MB is they have to start distinguishing between their higher end models like the s63 and have exclusive options not just little bits here and there. S63 should have different seats, color options, etc, etc. Thats why I dont get the Maybach its the same car besides the back seat.

You could also get the 560 and Renntech kit and have both worlds.

Look at the Audi S8 its an amazing car.

2020 S 560 Cabriolet -2023 Demon 170 - 1961 Cadillac -2014 Cayman
I test drove a S63 Coupe, S65 Coupe, and S560 Cabriolet. S63 and S65 have crazy power. S560 was WAY more comfortable than the S63 and still more comfortable than the S65. S560 has plenty of power for every day driving, and has the smoothest ride of the 3. I bought the 2020 S cabriolet, and LOVE it! The ride quality was my #1 criteria. I do see the allure of the AMG models, but the smooth ride of the S560 is unbeatable. AMG comfort setting was not the same as the S560 comfort setting. AMG obviously handles better.

I have to ask how can it be more comfortable when its the exact same car minus the engine? The V12 is the smoothest of the 3?

The AMG cars have a tighter suspension & other enhancements to allow them to better handle the increased power.

That’s how I feel as well, but some folks prefer a tighter, sportier ride.

What? You test drove a car and you believe the S560 is WAY more comfortable? Maybe the Coupes are different but I am talking about the four door sedan.

I lived with a S550/S560 sedan for 53,000 miles and a ‘19 S63 AMG 4 door sedan for 20,000 miles. The non AMG Sedan variant has the same comfort level as the S63 sedan if it is in comfort mode. I realize this is your opinion after a test drive but there are so many ride adjustments that I am only guessing you did not get the same suspension settings set up or the sedans and coupes are completely different from one another. Again don’t want to take away from your opinion but I really disagree with your assessment after living with both sedan variants over the past seven years.

Test Drove Both Today

I test drove both today and felt like the S63 is just a little bit stiffer than S560. Does this bother me? Not at all. I loved the way it drives and felt like the S560 I had besides being very comfortable; It was kind of boring after a few hours of drive. I am personally not a fan of stiff rides, so I could never get an AMG! However, I believe the S63 is the only model that I can be happy as a daily.

Yes I did test drive 2 coupes and 1 cabriolet. The sedans may ride a little differently, longer wheelbase? So my assessment was not with a sedan. Also I did try all 3 in comfort and sport mode. There may be a few more adjustments elsewhere, so my comparison was just a simple mode change for all 3. All of the new S class models are really great, so just a matter of opinion. I can see reasons to buy and love any one of them.
