Summer Road Trip Gas Mileage - What are you getting?

I just got home from a road trip (Atlanta -> Orlando -> Around Disney Park -> Atlanta), my mileage today from Orlando to Atlanta, in my 2019 S450, was 28.3mpg (US Gallons.)

This was on one tank of fuel, and the low fuel level light came on as I pulled off the highway, less than 1/4 mile from the gas station.

Today:
  • 28.3 mpg (US) / 34 mpg (UK) / 8.31 Liters per 100 km / 12.03 Kilometers per Liter (Handy conversion site: https://www.calculateme.com)

Trip Total was:
  • 26.4 mpg (US) / 31.7 mpg (UK) / 8.91 Liters per 100 km / 11.22 Kilometers per Liter

What mileage is everyone else getting on their summer road trips?

I should get good numbers when we head west soon - good up until we leave Illinois. Numbers drop the further west you get and especially when cruising with 80mph speed limits with 400 miles of interstate at a time. It’s the main reason I got another S Class. Happy… comfortable cruising.

Since you have an S450, this is from my E450 Wagon, last leg of the trip east a few months ago.

Its amazing to me that the mileage is so similar between the S450 and S560 on the highway:

Also, once they get rolling does it take much to keep them going? I got very lucky with traffic today, no major slowdowns, which is very unusual, and I was went between using Distronic and not.

4Matic, 20” wheels, with Run Flats, I think that I would prefer 19” with a bit more rubber on NRF. 20” look great, I’ve cracked one (which had previously been repainted another spot, and when added to the other two that have been repaired, it means that 3 of 4 have cracked. Although I think the fourth has been replaced, as I don’t see how only 3/4 have been damaged, and the PO had the wheel/tire policy.

Tire size is, Front: 245/40 R20, Rear: 275/35 R20

In my ‘18 S560, on very flat secondary roads driving 60-65 mph, I have gotten 35 mpg.

On rolling secondary roads, cruise control set at 63, 28+ is typical.

Not a bit unusual for my '19 S560 on interstates I-10, I-40. I don't use ECO anymore since it seems to make no difference. On Interstates going into to headwind it drops down to the 25/26 mpg range give or take With a real good tail wind from Kramer Junction, Ca to Amarillo, Tx I was seeing mpg in the 30 mpg, That was, as I said, in March/April and it was one heck of a tail wind two yrs ago.

Even had a XK Jaguar that got into the 30 mpg leaving Barstow to Needles. Santa Ana winds I belive. That car was lucky to get 22 mpg the rest of the time.

S-600 does not do so shabby, either.

cool thx. You have worst case mpg then for your vehicle with the 4Matic and largest 20” wheels, but still impressive at 28.3mpg! The smaller diameter wheels achieve better mpg and acceleration in general. I bet if you had RWD and 18s it would be over 30mpg.

Like you guys..... great mileage on these big, comfortable cars. When I do the calculations upon fill up I find the indicated dash miles/gallon is always higher than the actual mileage calculated. Still very pleased though.

Just back from the outlet mall ... going 75 to 80 most of the way, A/C on, with a few slow spots and work zones ... the old 4.7L with 7-speed trans still does quite nicely!

My W222 MPG has always been around the manufacturer 26-27 MPG value, I’ve never been able to get it well above that value or beyond 28 MPG despite the fact I have 19” wheels (but I mostly drive with ECO off).

Unlike my W222, in my BMW I was able to far exceed the 26 MPG by the manufacturer and can easily get to 32-34 MPG average on my way to work (20 miles trip on flat road), when driving under Eco Pro mode, and since it’s spring to early-summer time, the AC is barely doing anything. On my way back, it drops to 30-31 MPG combined average for the back and forth trips. Under the same route, my W222 does 27-26 MPG matching Mbenz factory numbers but hardly ever exceeding it.

If I’m getting 27-28 doing 80, I’m sure I could get 30 if I kept it to 65-70
