Whether or not the system is categorically unreliable is debatable, as evidenced by the often passionate and occasionally ill-mannered opinions on this forum.

Since I only enjoy my vehicles with a Mercedes Warranty (either CPO or extended from new), I'm not personally anxious about the 48V system. I'm currently enjoying the benefits in my wife's X167.
I will almost surely own a W223, at some future point. However, I've loved my 2017 W222 so much that my next S will likely be another W222 (post-facelift).

Our C300, that my son drives, has 126K miles and no warranty!

With the "newer" Mercedes models that I now own, I can only fully enjoy them with a M-B warranty in place.
That said, if I still had one of my previously loved models (without turbos, air suspension, or 48V charging), I'd be fine sleeping soundly at night sans warranty.
If only there was a way to purchase a brand new W124... "I'd like a 1993 300E, please, in Smoke Silver with Parchment Leather, and heated seats. Shaken, not stirred."

The new models with the 48v battery are fairly unknown. They have EQ Module - battery, Ctrl unit, cooling unit. The battery is surprisingly small. It's said to drive the car and I just wondered how far at low speed.
