Wheels/Tires

A bit of advice from the experts please. I just bought a set of 19 inch wheels with tires for my car. The car has 21 inch wheels currently. I did this because the 21 inch were a little noisy. I'm assuming the 19's with good quality tires will be quieter? Is this correct or did I misunderstand? Thx.

Yes for sure 19" will be a better ride. The car looks better with 21's but depending on where you live and quality of the roads I think you will have a much better ride on 19"'s. I have 19" AMG wheels and still have the MOE tires which I know are not ideal but I cannot bear throwing out perfectly good rubber until I wear those out. Get non-run flats for better ride and a kit to repair if necessary.

It depends on the type of tires you go with. An open block tread will produce more noise, which I'm assuming your 21's are. Most all-season tires are fairly quiet.

I'm always searching for the quietest tire, so I understand your plight! I recommend filtering your TireRack search for "Grand Touring All-Season" and "Non Run-Flat." Then scrutinize each tire's test results carefully for noise.

I'm not sure whether or not it's true that smaller wheel/tire combinations inherently are quieter, as it depends on the tire choice (it's possible to choose a crappy/noisy 19" tire versus a wonderfully quiet 21" tire). I will say that it seems like there are more options to choose from, the smaller you go.

Hope that helps!

P.S. If you currently have run-flats and are worried about doing without, you can always purchase the Mercedes TIREFIT kit for your trunk. That's what I did, when I ditched my run-flats in search of the best ride quality... I'll never go back!

Make sure to look at the TEST RESULTS on Tire Rack, not the owner surveys.

I have Pirelli PZero All Season Plus 2s on mine and am very happy with them, they were just replaced in Pirelli's lineup with the 3 model.

so the mobile tire van shows up today. couldn't replace the 21inch wheels with the 19 inch wheels because the lug nuts were about 3 mm too long! Didn't know this was a thing - given the wheels are mercedes wheels from the same year and model....good to know- be warned...i'll have to goto the stealership to pick up 20 of these tomorrow.

Wouldn't have though of this myself, either. Sorry for your troubles, but thank you for paying it forward for the rest of us...

They must be aftermarket wheel studs. These didn't come from the factory with 21s

I was wondering the same thing. There was no 21" option from MB for the W222, so I assumed he was referring to his AMG GT53, not the S-Class. Maybe that car came with 21's as a factory option.

I was referring to my AMG GT 53! I have to admit that on the AMG forum people are not as vocal/responsive as on his forum. My question does apply to wheel/tire changes in general though

I've always found Pirelli tires to be very smooth & quiet.

The hard part about your question is that it is both easy and difficult to answer. Pretty much any quality tire will be better than a low quality tire. BUT...you probably already had good quality tires on your car already. And different types of tires provide different benefits. If you decided to go with a 19" wheel and got a tire with foam inserts, they would definitely be quiet. But potentially at the expense of handling or other factors.

My go to reference point is Tire Rack; they have detailed tire tests and tons of reviews from people who already own the tires. You can even sort the reviews so that you get people who drive like you or own similar cars. Another place to get info is from from a Youtube channel named "Tyre Reviews". Sounds like you've already made your decision, so too late. Like everything else, the details are where the differences lay.

I rely on Tire Rack ratings as well. From the product descriptions and testing results it seems they have a pretty comprehensive measurement process. Still, things like noise and ride are very subjective and few of us get the opportunity to drive one car back-to-back with different tires and wheels to judge the differences.

The good thing about noise is that it's very objective. TR has objective test, some YT reviewers also, where tire noise, both rolling and tire slap, is measured. Tire noise is the one objective measure that will carry across pretty much any car in any condition.
