Don’t laugh. I have a first world problem. We used to take the propane tank in the back of the old BMW 5 series. Now it’s a new BMW 5 series and the W222. Obviously we put it in the back and move the passenger seat back and cover the tank with towels. But for just 30 minutes will it hurt the seat or leather in any way? BMW has white leather. MB has black.

What do people with SUVs do? I can’t exactly put a full propane tank in the trunk.

Whenever I have to transport propane bottles or fuel containers, I use a bumper hitch carrier that keeps them outside the vehicle. Still, it's amazing that other drivers will tailgate you.

Why not put it in the trunk? I drive propane tanks to be refilled in my S Class, I just put them in the trunk.

If its pressing up against any of the leather or seat materials for 30 minutes it can damage the materials for sure, if it isn't doing that then you'll be fine.

You just inspired a great idea for a no tailgate accessory. With one minor alteration. Make sure the propane bottle is empty, but have it emblazoned with flammable, caution, warning etc.

You put tanks full of propane in your trunk where they can roll around and explode????

(Where do your groceries go?)

I secure them in the trunk so they won't roll around, but what is the difference between putting it in your trunk or in the back of your car.

Propane tanks are not that explosive lol. It falling over in your trunk is not going to make it explode. Where do I put my groceries? In the trunk next to the propane tank

Reminds me of the recent incident in SoCal, but this doofus had the brilliant idea of lighting a cigarette near a bunch of butane canisters in his car.

https://abc7.com/post/toyota-suv-app...-van/14864528/

I don't transport propane tanks, but I do frequently transport a 3 gallon water bottle. Weighs about the same as 20lb propane tank. I transport it in the trunk under the cargo net in my C63 coupe. Just like in the picture below with the foldable crate, the cargo net forms a tent over the bottle and holds it in place. The net and crate came with the car from the factory and there are tie-down rings in the trunk. If your car didn't come with the cargo net, you can probably get it through the parts department or off of eBay.

It’s a scientific fact that a full propane tank cannot explode if it is one foot behind your seat but it will explode if it’s 10 feet behind you in the trunk. That’s why putting it close to you is safer. 🥸

I miss not having the fold down rear seats. But I did check if my travel surfboard fits in the back of the 530i with the seats down, and it does.

With very little room for luggage.

Edit: anyone know if a propane tank fits in the trunk if I have a convenience box?

I was curious so I googled. Apparently it’s best to leave them standing up not have it on the side. So maybe we’ll keep it in the back seat.

Maybe if I still had a 14 year old BMW with gray leather I wouldn’t give a fk where the propane tank goes. Now, that BMW has white leather. I need to see how many towels we need to keep the tank from touching the seat.

We used to use the 2010 BMW when we went hiking and got sweaty or when we carried around the propane tank. Or to carry mulch from Home Depot. We would fill up the gas tank and propane tank at Costco.

You think I’m doing any of that with my MB? Did you just fall off a turnip truck?

Are you compelled to transport them in your car ? That sounds scary to me
Seriously, a warning label might need for tailgating idiots .Whatever you do , make sure they don't travel around , securing them is a must to me . Ropes and hooks could do the job

Propane by itself doesn't explode. There's no oxygen in the tank. The tank could explode if the pressure inside gets too high, but propane tanks are regulated to avoid overfilling. If the tank leaks, then you get an air/fuel mixture, but for it to explode you need a spark. So unless you decide to smoke a cigarette in your car and the tank leaks at the same time, the risk of explosion is pretty much nil. The main concern is really that you don't want it to bang around in the trunk. Chances are it will brake some of the plastic trim before the tank will burst. So secure it that it stays in place and you'll be fine, but I wouldn't park the car out in the sun with the tank in the trunk and let the pressure rise to the point where the tank bursts.

You'd have to be an idjut to put that inside your car! I drag mine behind my pick'em-up for safety.

Thanks for that. I may check that out but we found a solution. I had Benz Ninja install the Propane Assist ejection system in my 2020 S560 in case of an explosion. I just have to remember to open the sun roof first.
