Oil drain plug

Is it true that a rwd car oil drain plug is plastic and an awd car is metal? Or if your dipstick in the back your drain plug is metal and if in the front it’s plastic. The first idea is what Rockauto is showing when I’m looking at drain plugs for my 2015 S550 4matic. The second one is what I seen on YouTube videos. I need a mythbuster 😂. I know I’m being lazy but I just want to see if there is a coordination between the two.

Plastic drain plug is indeed for RWD chassis.

Please note this is if you have the M278 engine.

Thank you so much for a very definitive answer. I thought certain years had a metal plug but now I know.

Had my 2020 S560 4Matic on my lift a few weeks ago looking for the oil pressure solenoid - never found it. Need a shop manual. It’s incredibly tight up in there.

While under there… I looked and I’ll admit I have no idea where the oil drain plus is. I’ve changed a lot of oil and just did my FF and my daily driver. Is it the small round plug in the black honeycomb piece? Interesting it has bump stops so no over tightening. Guess the oil filter is the big round cap, but thought it was on the side, horizontal? Guess I really need a shop manual.

Oil drain plug is plastic. It is quarter turn or half turn, I can't remember which one but there ore plenty YT videos showing the procedure, not threaded like old school drain plugs. The design removes the chance of stripping or overtightening.

Here is the video on how to do S560 because they are kind of different.

A couple comments on this video. If you change your oil, please be sure to properly support the vehicle. He uses a jack without any support for the vehicle. This is pretty dangerous. Should have a jack stand or at least some support under the front tire. Also, the oil he uses does not meet specifications for S560. Needs to be MB 229.52. The Mobil 1 he uses meets 229.5, which will damage catalytic converters on an S560.

I have a 2019 S 560 so it has the plastic plug. I ordered about 25 of these and I change them out every 25K miles, or 5 oil changes.
They seem fine, but I love maintenance so I replace them.

Here is a video on how to change the oil on a 2018-2020 S class.

Interesting he says 15/16 socket for the oil filter, wouldn’t think anything is SAE on a MB.

15/16 is 23.8mm ~ 24mm. It's not SAE it's 'what I've got in the toolbox'. After 30+ years of wrenching my own Mercedes I find that all my SAE tools now fit in a single drawer.

Along with the 229.52 I also see 229.61 and for the 229.61 the manual say lowest viscosity for the S560. Motul search tool gives 0W-30.

Another case of someone who wants to be a YouTube star, but dispenses bad information. I'm amazed anybody would get under a car in an unsafe manner like this. Super cheap and easy to grab a pair of jack stands or ramps.

By the way, my 2018 S560 came with a steel oil plug as do all early production 560’s. The parts counter at a nearby MB dealer sold me the copper washer for the plug and that’s what I found once I got the car up in the air.

Locate the engine serpentine belt
the largest pulley is crankshaft balancer
look at 8 O'Clock (20Hr00)
that's the solenoid connector
it cuts down oil pressure below 3500.Rpm

My 2019 S560 has a metal drain plug, and the oil filter thats fitted facing backwards which is little tight to pull out.

This is for an M176 engine (2020 S560 4M), correct? I took a bunch of pictures and a video and didn’t see anything, plus looking for a wire leading to it and nothing. Lots of hardware there.

Couple screen grabs from the video. There’s a bracket right in front of that area.

I also found pictures online where the solenoid connects to the oil pump but no luck finding it either.

You're right its hard to spot anything at all - Use a mirror and flashlight... sometimes old tech is most convenient.

Here is a guaranteed way:
Search online partlist catalog for exact location drawing... the so called EPC!

then you can go in with confidence and gloves on.

My data card says its a 176 engine, but the oil pan is different, have the metal plug as its a rwd. Would the solenoid/EPC be in the same area - does it just need to be unplugged - or do i have to do more.

Tried that too. #37 looks like front and low where you’re saying. When I have time I’ll get it back on the lift for another try. Since I have their tune, I called RENNtech and asked if they could do something on the tune side to deactivate it. The guy I talked to didn’t know about it and said he’d talk to others. Sounded interested, but not expecting anything.

W222 S550 4Matic and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
I have a 2016 S550 4Matic and my drain plug is metal (aluminum). The dipstick is in the back as well. Please note that 2018 and newer W222s have a different V8 engine with the oil filter and plastic drain plug located on the bottom. If you watch a YT tutorial on servicing your engine, be sure that the S-Class depicted is 2014-2017 or has the M278 engine.

This is an M276, but location is the same: https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-...ml#post9061237
