HUD display fuzzy with new windshield

I just had a new OEM windshield installed today at Gerber Glass. They did good work, but I noticed right away that the HUD display is now kinda fuzzy....like 20/40 vision. I went into the service menu and tried multiple adjustments, but those only skewed the image and did nothing to defuzz the image. I cleaned the HUD display and made sure the windshield was clean too, but that did nothing.

Does anybody know how to adjust the clarity of the image? Or is this possibly a defective OEM windshield?

Apparently there are HUD windshields and non-HUD windshields according to them: https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-c...g-mistake.html

You are incorrect. This is definitely the OEM HUD windshield.

Sorry, but it actually does mean they installed the wrong windshield. Not intentionally, but it was mislabeled somewhere along the way. MB has gone through some major changes in their glass suppliers, you cna search on the forum for how the signature on the windshield has changed. There used to only be 1 OEM signature, but there are 3 different OEM signatures on the windshields now. And neither the glass people or the dealers know how or why, or exactly when the changes were made. But that fuzzy look you describe is exactly how it looks when you install a HUD on a car with a standard windshield. Here's a video, does yours look like this:

If the shop got the windshield from the dealership, then you can get a replacement windshield free of charge because they gave you (or the shop) the wrong part. Surely someone messed up a long the lines when they ordered it via VIN.

No, it does not look nearly as bad as one is in your video. It just isn't as sharp as it used to be. And it is definitely a HUD windshield as the image starts to disappear when adjusting is too low or high....or if I move left of right in my seat. So the reflective coating is definitely there. The signature on the windshield looks exactly like the last one.

I'm just wondering if there is a way to sharpen the image....kind like the way you can make adjustments on a range finder or scope to sharpen an image.

Interesting...you have to account for the cell phone video when looking at the YT video.
Problem is, there are no options for adjusting the sharpness on the HUD. I assume you know how to get into the service menu, there's an option for HUD there, but I've never actually looked into it. I don't know the process for getting into the service menu on W222 V1 cars, only V2 cars, but I'm sure you can find it on YT. Having said that, I think they (Gerber) messed something up, or you got the wrong windshield. I just had my windshield replaced last Fall, and I had to be double sure about the correct windshield. When my first appointment was scheduled, they called me a couple days ahead of time and said they had ordered in the wrong windshield and needed to reschedule my appointment after the right one arrived. I have HUD but don't have a heated windshiend, which is where the confusion came in.
Try to access the HUD options in the service menu and see what's available. If that doesn't work, you have to let them know they messed up your car and need to make it right.

Could it be that they smudged the lens/cover of the HUD? Maybe a good wipe down will restore it?

I did go into the service menu. That only allows you to distort/skew the image, not make it more clear. I called the local Benz dealer and they confirmed that there aren't any adjustments that can be make to change the clarity of the image.

It is the proper windshield from the dealer and it appears Gerber did a good job with the install as everything is lined up perfectly. I honestly think it's just a minor flaw in the reflective box section of the windshield. Apparently they don't make 'em like they used to. I have an appointment with them on Tuesday so they can evaluate. I have a feeling they may offer to get another windshield from the dealer to see if the one they installed was defective. There is an install guarantee and a lifetime guarantee on the glass (unless cracked from outside damage).

That's the first thing I thought of. Cleaning it made no difference.

So if you stand outside of the car and look at the HUD display THROUGH the window, does it look sharp on the HUD itself?

Put a mirror between HUD and windshield

If it sharpens up, then you know for sure that it is the windshield causing the aberration.

Gerber put in a new windshield last week and it is more clear now.

Yep, they put the wrong windshield in your car. Maybe it was defective, but more than likely mislabeled somewhere along the way.

Good to see that they resolve the issue. Looks like they in fact installed the wrong windshield but didn't no if there was a difference in maybe the code number.
