Also, if you read closely….both models have mild hybrid….but the S580 does not have the A/C compressor on electric. The S500 does. Interesting.

One of the features I want is the rear wheel steering assist. On the AMG build it gives 4.5 degree assist (available option on the AMG), and 10 degree (available option) on the Executive build. All of the articles and youtube videos talk about how much the 10 degree helps, but nothing is ever mentioned about the 4.5 assist???
The Mercedes Benz USA website has a "build" tool with 2021 prices. It is helpful, but it doesn't seem to have all of the options like 3D technology (which I was able to order at the dealer in May).
Back to the MPG, the S500 states 429 HP which is plenty for me. If those figures are accurate I would be very OK with that, but my 2021 GLE450 is supposed to get 21/26 and at 1,500 miles, my average now is 18.8 (I never reset it). My previous car was a 2016 Jag XF which was rated at 340 HP and 20/30, and that MPG was very accurate. I am hoping the S500 is close to it's estimate.
The info I gathered is for USA builds. I seen the S-Class packaged differently in other countries.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
S500: 10,000 / city MPG 20 = 500 gallons. 500 gallons @ $4.50 a gallon = $2,250 in gas.
S580: 10,000 / city MPG 17 = 589 gallons. 589 gallons @ $4.50 a gallon = $2,651 in gas.
Premium gas in my area averages $4.36/gal. For my example I bumped it to $4.50 and assumed the lower all city MPG. Even so, the difference would be about $401 more a year to drive the S580 if you drive 10,000 miles a year, and since I retired I drive a lot less. For less the $400/year extra, I don't find it to be a deal breaker.
