Yes, that’s right folks! In Germany, you can choose any 18” or 19” wheels as no cost options. Of course, the geniuses at MBUSA decided that we peons in the US should not be allowed an 18” option and that’s because they know how perfectly smooth, bump and pothole free our inner city streets are here in the New World—NOT! I’m seriously thinking of putting 18’s on my new S580. Here’s a photo off the Mercedes-Benz.de “konfigurator” site.

18 inch wheels are intended for the smaller engine models but they are approved by the factory on the S580 too. Option code U29 is not allowed with 18 inch wheels (bigger brakes).

A bit odd that no option for staggered wheels is mentioned for any model. Perhaps not a commercially viable option, there should not be any technical limitation except for the 10 degree rear wheel steering.

MBUSA are clowns in many ways. Option content decisions for the U.S, is simply one example.

You would probably also be one of very few US customers to option those wheels....

Not to mention they look ugly too. Very happy with the 20's on my S, perfect mix of comfort and looks.

Well, as they say, different strokes. I happen to think these simple wheels are rather nice looking.

I find the ride on the 21s with Michelins super smooth on my S580 on Michigan roads. No issues with flats, bent rims so far. I love it, Wouldnt even bother going below 19s for this big sedan.

Different strokes, understood. IMO those look like skateboard wheels. A car of this stature should be riding on 20's at minimum. But MBUSA should offer them if you wish.

Very happy with my 20" AMG multi spoke bi colour wheels. Good compromise between performance, comfort and aesthetics. Those wheel wells are big and with 4.5 degree rear axle steering they work well. Would have preferred Michelins but the Pirellis are quite tolerable.

Only problem with those 18's is they wont clear the bigger brake calipers and rotors of the S580 unless I am wrong? My RS7 has huge calipers and rotors and the 20s wont clear them so I could only go down to 21s for winter time from my 22 summers and they ride great.

Yep, they will not fit. S580’s that come to the USA have the U29 Sport Brakes. Bummer!

If you really want the 19s, I highly recommend you buy a set from these guys. They are all OEM straight from factory at a much better cost than what we pay here. I got my 20 winter set from them and its perfect for winter time. Their customer service is excellent. Use the chat button and chat with them. Not bad price of $1,700 for a set of 4 plus shipment for total of $2,235.

Then get some nice non runflat Michelins.

Let me know your thoughts. I figured it didn't hurt to give you some options. The ride is night and day over the OEM pirellis and hankooks, etc.

I think 30 might be a bit low, seeing as how the factory specs something like 42. Maybe 36 or so.

I bought my forged AMG wheels for my SL from Tony at alloywheelsdirect.net. Great price, amazing service.

Check the factory specs on the fuel door, they aren't 42. 35 on my W222. In different markets the specs are lower, in China they are 29. In the US they raise pressure specs for fuel economy.

I have run 30 on my 560 for 20k miles and I have no premature wear. There is a huge ride difference between 30 and 35, even 32 and 35.

Dump the runflats too and drop the pressure to 33-35 psi.

On my 20” Pirelli PZeros OEM fronts are 31, rears are 32. Takes corners well and compliant when the roads are rough.

Are those the only MB Forged Aluminum style available? I would think being forged over simply cast would hold up better around pothole crater city.
