The recall calls out the safety systems (of course), but obviously it impacts essentially everything electrical in the car with failures manifesting itself in a more owner-obvious manner. The soft-close doors, for example, probably requires a fairly high voltage threshold to work, assuming it isn’t an actuator failure.
Probably.

Well, I don’t want a coupe either. Can’t deal with the gigantic doors in tight parking spaces. I’m like Goldilocks: I’m looking for “just right.”

Totally agree Streamliner. That’s one of the reasons I got rid of my Bentley Continental GT. The doors weighed a ton and opening in tight spaces was impossible!!

it was for a battery drain issue. However there was a scheduled software install, so not sure if that’s what they did.

So correction: I guess I also mean wish they didn't get rid of the S-Class convertible.
I believe the C217 also had a Maybach version : ) perhaps that will be the car you wanted OP?

When MB announced an S Class convertible, I just KNEW that I would get one. I had visions of the truly magnificent concept car called the “Ocean Drive,” that MB had built in 2007, which was a 4-door convertible, based on the W221 S Class. Here’s a photo. I was very excited about the car and could not wait to see & drive it. Unfortunately, when the S550 Cabriolet arrived, I was so disappointed with it. To me, it was a total compromise. It was a 2-door, with a very cramped rear seat. I drove the first S550 model and the later S560 and in both cases I did not care for the ride, handling or much of anything else about the car. When I compared it to the R231 SL, for me there was no comparison, the SL was just so much better in most every way.

I found a 2016 Maybach S600 (V12) for sale with only 9000 miles on it and under $70K!! Very tempting. A car that retailed for $200,000 now for sale at a $130K discount.

That's also why I sold my E450. I had to always think about parking a few more rows away from other cars which I do anyway but still an issue. I did notice that on the S coupes the problem didn't seem so bad as the car sat up higher than in my SL and E450 coupe.

I never have that problem with my SL, as I never park it anywhere. I take it out of the garage, drive it for an hour or so and then put it back in the garage. I realize that in the long run, I am probably only saving the car for the next owner, but that’s what I do sometimes. I had my 2004 SL500 for 12 years and sold it with only 22,000 miles on it. It still had the original tires on it. Here is how the underside looked right before I sold it. See the original tires?

I was browsing eBay today and Youtube videos of the newest SLs and I thought about you and your well-pampered SL and how one day I might be the one to buy it from you. Honestly I like the previous models better than the new one because I am scared of having a soft top and I just think the styling is still fresh. I had a 2016 and had a blast with it. I also don't want to deal with the pop out door handles. The major pro for the new one is the new dash and console. If they had made the dash and console of the W223 to look like the new SL, I would have probably suckered into buying a 223 instead of the Audi. I have to hold tight right now due to some business decisions.

I see. for the seats, just curious how much of a difference is it really in terms of room? What about compared to an E convertible?

Good find! Although sadly not the car he will be getting as he mentioned he doesn't want a car with the lack of room as mentioned. I initially thought a Maybach S convertible will be for him given it is not too long but then disappointing to hear about the lack of room oh well back to the drawing board for OP.

Well now my driver side's soft close function is broken since last Saturday. Then today while on vacation here in Switzerland, I get message that the driver side window is open and the ignition is on. I checked and it's not open nor the ignition is on.

Well, that's a new one. So sorry you are having issues. I guess the next thing that can go wrong on the W223 is having trouble with the AM radio stations not coming in clear. I can't imagine that being a software issue.

That sounds like antenna issues, but probably only true for older cars.

Well, I saw a Mercedes dealer in my way to Interlaken Switzerland and asked the mechanic if they can look at it and see if it's just a software update. He said it takes 3 hours to do software updates for S Class and asked if I can leave the car. I wish I'd done it the day I got here but now it's too late. However, I sent an e-mail to the dealer by my town but have yet to received a reply back.

I see, I guess it wasn't a vehicle you were shopping for after all, you always wanted a wagon if you were to get an E which you did.
