2007/2008 S 65
I was in Affalterbach last week and took this picture of a pre-production 2007/2008 S 65 AMG. Apparently the S class will not get the new 6.3 liter engine. The 5.5 kompressor will remain as the AMG V8 and the 6.5 twin turbo will remain the AMG V12. Apparently AMG feels that the higher torque 5.5 K is a better engine for the heavier AMG vehicles like the E, S, CL and SL models. This car has the 6.5 liter twin turbo but does not have any AMG body work. The production vehicle will have the AMG body work but this particular vehicle is dressed down.

So they'll keep the 55 also? I didn't expect that. Apparently they want an S-AMG affordable for the commoners as well :-)
BTW, do you have more pictures? And do you mind if they get publilshed on a website?

With the exception of a version that is not naturally aspirated, it would be a step backwards for MB to use that motor. The S65 motor has an output of 604hp and 738ft lbs, whereas the new 6.3l has an output 510hp and 465 ft lbs. Am I missing something here?

And the three valve 5.5 liter AMG M113 V8 Kompressor has 493 hp and 516 lb-ft. My guess now is that they will keep using it in the S 63 AMG - maybe in an updated version.

It's also difficult to predict what the sales organizations in the different countries decide as happened recently with the S500 vs S550...

Here is the way I understand the new S-class engine choices:
S500 - normally aspirated 5.5 liter engine producing 380+ HP (This is not an AMG engine but the new Mercedes Benz 4 valve V8).
S55 - AMG 5.5 liter Kompressor. (Same engine as current AMG S55).
S65 - AMG 6.5 liter bi-turbo. (Same engine as current AMG S65).
*6.3 liter could be used in the future, perhaps even a 6.3 liter kompressor producing over 600 HP.

S65 AMG:
Where are you getting this information? It is direct contrast to what I was told while at AMG last week. You could be right but I was specifically told that the new 6.3 will not go into the S class as of yet. The AMG V8 will be the 5.5 Kompressor engine (Perhaps a 4 valve version) and the AMG V12 will be the current 6.5 twin turbo.

Rob Allen head of AMG in the US told us a few weeks ago @ MBUSA that the 6.3 engine will be in the S and the E by next summer. I would say he is a good person to listen to.

Or is there a possibility that a version of the 6.3 would be used that was not naturally aspirated (i.e. biturbo, supercharger). As it stands, I cannot understand why MB would go to the 6.3 from the 6.0 biturbo V12, and incur a subsequent loss of 94 horsepower and 273 ft lbs.
Based on Rob:
The S63 will replace the S55 since they are doing away with SC and going NA which will be a lighter engine with the 7G trans.
The S65 will not change and still be the leader in the line-up.

And the new M156 in the ML 63 AMG will not be used in the S 63 AMG.

With all due respect, perhaps Rob Allen is not that a reliable source. He alledgedly also anounced the SLR nose on the SL recently: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-sl63-amg-sl65-amg-r230/123590-breaking-news-new-sl-slr-nose-coming.html
Be aware that disputing Rob Allans alledged statements may cause agressive replies.
I've heard this "6,2l engine won't be in the new S-AMG" from 3 or 4 different places in the last week now.
